Basically this is an okay grocery store with a few cool items. It's not big like a chain store, but has a pretty good selection. FoodSmart is located on Armitage. Has an okay location close to a few bars and restaurants that are good. The prices aren't the cheaper but mostly are okay. A pretty much unassuming looking store except they advertise vegan food and items. It has quite a few for a small store. There's pour yourself kombucha, which is a nice touch. Has a good amount of vegan friendly meat substitutes. The prices are okay too. Otherwise it's a pretty typical convenience store with the basics. This even has a post office, so send your mail from here. Every now and then I get a few things from here if around. It's pretty good for a small grocery store to be honest. I used to absolutely love this place. It has been a staple of the neighborhood for literally decades. Sadly, the new management has really let it slide downhill. It goes way beyond no longer having the post office. First and foremost: You shouldn't even go here in the first place, but if you must, check your receipt and how things ring up EVERY TIME. I'm not exaggerating when I say that probably 50% of what I've purchased there in the past several weeks rings up higher than the price tag. I'm fed up at this point and will likely stop going. Secondly: They've had repeated issues with spoiled / expired food. Check your dates. It was always overpriced, but seems to be getting even more overpriced lately even BEFORE things ring up higher at the register. For a while I was attributing these issues to new management and excusing them, but it's SO consistent now that it's not unfair for people to go from thinking it's "just honest mistakes" to thinking it's intentionally scamming customers. This place has a great selection of food and beverages. It's convenient because it's close by but prices of random things can be insane ($8 for oatmilk). The staff is always very friendly. I wish the yogurts, milk, juices, and drinks were kept in a closed refrigerator because they are always room temp. I took another break & started going back again since this is the closest grocery store. They started stocking cheaper items for the lower income folks in the area & business seems to be up. I'm debating on whether to lower this place to 3 stars though since even though they implemented the scanners, cashiers still don't use them so I end up being overcharged. I went in a few days ago & was overcharged by about $8 (was charged $3.99 twice for an item & another mysterious $3.29 charge was added even though nothing I bought was $3.29.) It's a shame because unless you're counting everything you're buying you won't know until you get home as everything on the receipt shows as *GROCERIES* since they don't scan. I still find it extremely odd that they take the risk of selling clearly expired, molded produce & meat, but mark it at a discount (why they don't think people will sue them I don't know.) Last time I was there, there was a fully grey package of Angus beef just sitting there in the aisle & the rest of the packages were bubbled from the gases being released due to aging meat, something I've only seen in people's homes, not in a store. I've also accidentally purchased several items that were moldy over the last few months, but not clearly visible due to packaging & at the same time not marked at a discount. This place being open 24hrs a day is such a game changer. They have alot of unique products, including many vegan, and craft items. They also have a really good beer and liq selection. Now on to the bad, being open 24/7 comes at a cost. Many of the products here are well marked up. You will recognize many items here,are things that are sold at costco at bulk and marked up significantly. I get it, they gotta get their margins. So many items are not worth it.. I came here to buy ingredients for a salad. My wife was craving for vegetable salad and she liked a homemade salad. I parked my car easily since there were few vacant seats in the parking lot. I 1 bought cucumber, 2 fresh tomatoes, 2 green onions, 1 red bell pepper, 5 radishes, 1 small jicama, 5 romaine lettuce leaves, 1 clove garlic, lemon juice, pomegranate juice, chopped fresh dill and fresh basil. All of the produce that I bought was fresh. Next I went to the selection of drinks to buy some wine. Then I went to the seafood selection to buy some meat to grill. It's perfect for salad and wine. This used to be my go-to store every midnight or late at night before because it is open 24/7 but I do not know if it is still a 24/7 grocery store since I just visited the store and I was not able to before because I realized the grocery store near my place is the better choice. What I can say about this store is that they have a nice and well-stocked selection of every product. Aside from the fact that it is a 24/7 grocery store, the selections they have are really good, prices are reasonable but there are also few items that have a higher price which I do not know the reason why. The store is also not big and the aisles are really narrow that the two carts would definitely not fit and would also probably bump to other cart if you are no looking your way. Even so, the store is really clean and it is also well-organized. Their post office worker at Food Smart charged me twice on my mastercard cc and apparently I just found out they charged me "twice" on my visa cc for 1 post office shipment I bought in January 2021. I then called the Owner John, and with much coercing and having to deal with his loud, obnoxious tone and unprofessionalism; I had to call him at the store and and follow up with him numerous times over 2 months on the status of my transactions. He refunded me once for the 1 extra charge on my visa, and refunded me only once on my Mastercard. I called him back and told him that visa sent me my statement and it recently showed a double charge on it. I told him that since he refunded the visa once, the $26.95 charge still on it was legitimate; so he doesn't have to refund that card. However, he still has the 1 extra charge he has not refunded on my Mastercard. I called him up today and if you have ever met this guy, he has a very aggressive, loud, accusatory demeanor and rude tone.I told him I would bring the Mastercard statement and visa statement to show him proof. He started getting loud with me and was accusing me of making this up; in which I told him I would bring him the proof with the documents. I told him to check his tone and to speak with respect, he became furious, used vulgar expletives and hung up the phone on me twice. I even called my bank to let them know on the day of the charges that this had happened at Food Smart. He then verbally attacked me and started using foul language towards me, and demanded to know why I called my bank. I have every right to contact my bank and inform them of these extra charges on the day that these transactions occurred. Why would I have to answer to John? Is he the consumer who's credit card was charged numerous times by Food Smart? I only went to that store for post office services, that's it. This man is very obnoxious and rude. and apparently has a lot of anger. If you ever have to deal with him; his poor demeanor will be obvious. He is an example of poor customer service and needs to learn how to manage errors his store makes on customers' credit card transactions; and how to treat customers, he needs to take a conflict resolution and anger management class. Unfortunately this business owner does not want to take accountability for his foul language and wants to project it onto a customer. If you ever go to the store, silently observe the way he speaks to staff and to his customers. That will sum it up. Go check out reviews below on this owner, dated 12/21/18, 1/13/18 and 7/24/18 - this guy has a MO and history of poor customer service, racial profiling and a potty mouth. He apparently ALSO replied unprofessionally to those customers that had a terrible experience at his store. Thus, Yelp had flagged him on his reply for violations of the Yelp terms of service. I had to immediately report his reply yesterday to Yelp b/c after I had posted this review, he had publicly posted my full name and cell # on here. He needs to cease and desist. Food Smart is a compact market with quite a bit of items in one place. They market themselves as being vegetarian/vegan friendly, but you can also find meat products here as well. You can get basics such as eggs, rice, and onions here. They also have more upscale items such as gourmet cheeses and sodas. The prices for most items are higher than at the grocery store, but that is to be expected. Paying a few cents more per food item is worth the convenience if you live close by. Some items such as their hard spirits has a dramatic markup though. My favorite rum (Pyrat) is $20 at Binnys, and I've seen it for $30 here. Even though they have a lot of alcohol at this market, I would suggest stocking up somewhere else if you want to save some $ . The beers and wines don't seem to have that large of a price markup though. The main negative about this market is the fact that they don't always do a good job of removing expired merchandise from the shelves. As a consumer, I know it's important to check expiration dates before purchasing food items, but I feel that Food Smart should be too. I don't really come here very often anymore, but I used to find at least one item per visit that had an expired date. The items were normally not just a day or two expired, but sometimes weeks expired. I hope they work on identifying these expired items earlier, so that customers have the opportunity to only purchase the freshest items. read more

It's open 24/7 (kind gross but also very convenient?) Huge selection on alc and was borderline a partial bodega where you can get curry bowls, pad Thai, and pizza. Definitely a unique experience that I would go out of my way to try again. Pricey for specialty items. Good variety of items: carries most staples, and the produce seems to be in a similar ballpark of other nearby grocers. Their beer and wine selection is formidable and being open 24hrs and having a built in post office are both very convenient. I had some concerns about price of goods and the owner John was attentive in addressing some of those concerns. Primarily, being a cost conscious consumer I tend to be cognisant not just of what I buy but when to buy as well, so sale prices at other establishments become my effective price. While Foodsmart is cost comparable on a number of items (I can't speak to all or even most items because I just know the ones I'm most familiar with), on items that tend to see frequent sales at other stores and thus are effectively staples of mine they come in significantly higher than what I spend on them in a given week at other grocery chains. I hope to be able to use this grocer more, as it is blocks from my house, has friendly attentive staff and useful amenities worth paying a little bit more for, though unfortunately I will probably still need to get a lot of my staple items from other places as long as there is as big a difference in effective price (price items are selling for on a given week, factoring sales). read more

It's really a liquor store that disguises itself as a grocery store, but it's got everything I like! Wine, of course. Greek yogurt, great coffee, and Synergy Kombucha drinks. They're pricey here at $3.99 - even pricier than Whole Paycheck, but when you gotta have your Kombucha fix, it's here. Lots of snacks and a pretty great selection of produce. I want to make cookies and pizza. So I grab all of their ingredients. They have a great selection where I can buy my needs. After that I went to the produce section. I also want to make a fruit shake. They love mango, that's why I bought half a kilo of mango. I also bought lemon for lemonade, coconut for coconut juice and guyabano for guyabano juice.
