This review is for Janette Najar. Janette was our "wedding planner" which is comical because she didn't plan anything. Not only that, but she could never remember the date of our wedding, tried to change the date of our wedding, and also tried to change the time of our wedding less than a week before our wedding. She brought in the board of the Forest Hill Association to intimidate and try to convince me that a time change was necessary. I was not having it. I gave her explicit instructions on what to do when (because she wasn't capable of creating an itinerary) and she couldn't even follow what I provided to her. Chairs were missing, the wrong plates were set out, it was incredibly unprofessional and disappointing. The Forest Hill Clubhouse is a lovely venue but Janette is incapable, misguided and clearly the result of someone landing in a job they're not qualified to fulfill. I wholeheartedly DO NOT recommend working with Janette. read more

I am SO SO SO SO happy I chose this venue for my wedding last weekend. Janette, the venue coordinator, is such a gem. I knew I could plan most of the decorations, drinks, food, etc by myself but wanted someone to help run things the day of so I wouldn't have to worry about things. I hired her as the day-of coordinator and she didn't let me down. The venue itself is like stepping into someone's cozy, beautiful, charming old home with that comforting smell of old wood and the gorgeous trees all around you. (I'm all about antique furniture, thrifting, flea markets, hardwood details, etc so I was in love with the place) We did the actual ceremony on the patio/courtyard area underneath the tall trees, with about 80 chairs set up and an awesome handmade arch made by a family friend who's an arborist. There's outlets outside for speakers for your processional music as well as during cocktail hour. They have a nice kitchen that your caterer can use, with lots of room for drinks and counter space. I had a vision of putting tables together to create the illusion of one long table with garland down the middle and Janette helped put together a floor plan/seating plan that worked PERFECTLY. We had a photobooth (A Flying Camera - also HIGHLY recommend!) set up in the courtyard after dinner and it was a big hit. The outside setting with the lights up above was such a great set up. The bridal suite upstairs is amazing and cute and I even had my little dog hang out up there during the reception in his crate so he had a quiet safe area to rest. There's also a groom suite area upstairs on the opposite side of the bride's area which my husband took advantage of beforehand. Perfect for getting ready, having a couple drinks, prepping for walking down the isle, etc. I'd say this venue is best for low-key, low-maintenance couples who appreciate the vintage/antique feel and who want to have a fun get together with their family/friends but not throw the most insane party of the year. I can't say enough good things about this place and how things turned out. Obviously if you're looking for a place to get super wild and crazy, this isn't the place. Janette has a responsibility to the neighbors, and the venue, to keep things under control and although we had a couple wild cards at our reception - things didn't get out of hand and she was awesome throughout the whole party. read more

We wanted to keep our wedding in the city of San Francisco. We had planned on having some out-of-town guests and wanted them to see why we love this city so much. We looked at different venues but they were way out of our price range for what we wanted. We wanted a piano at classically warm and inviting place, that could fit 80 guests comfortably. We wanted our guests to be outside for the ceremony but inside for the reception. We wanted free parking for our guests. When I met with Jeanette, I immediately felt warmth and class beaming from her. She portrays as a friend that you have known and loved for a long time. I had to bring my other half to see the venue and her. After he met her and saw the place, we put down the deposit. She was always available for us and ready to answer our many questions. We were treated so exquisitely regal. The day of the wedding went so smooth. Our guests were happy and so were we. You will not be disappointed if you book your event here! read more

This is a lovely venue (I'm a big fan of Bernard Maybeck). We had 80 people over for a buffet lunch red egg and ginger. It was comfortable, and there was a nice outdoor space for kids to run around in. Fortunately the day wasn't too hot. There isn't air conditioning that I'm aware of, so I can imagine the place being very stifling in August (at least in the afternoon). In mid September, I went up to the loft area, and it was muggy. Parking isn't bad during the day on weekends. But there isn't a private lot. And I would not call it especially handicap accessible or friendly. I have heard that the neighbors are not thrilled by evening events here, so be forewarned. read more

Our daughter's wedding reception was at this venue and in April 2015 and absolutely everything worked out perfectly. (Including the weather!) We also hired Janette as the event planner and it was money well spent. We were able to enjoy the day and not have to worry about the set up, deliveries, take down, or clean up. The crew she employed as servers were all brothers and extremely courteous and timely with the re arrangement from wedding to reception. We had about 85 people and it was the perfect sized venue for indoor seating. We never felt crowded nor "caverness". Highly recommend! read more

You might as well look elsewhere. There is a restriction on how loud you can crank your tune. Your noise level needs to be at a minimum. Other than that. It's a beautiful venue. Beautifully decorated. Small cozy home comfort. Janette venue coordinator was friendly on top of her schedules. She was accommodating with one of the guests, the guest asked for a well done steak. Janette came back with the request. By observing Janette she is the person you definitely need to help with coordinating your event to keep everyone on tasks with time scheduled. I must say she is a stickler when it comes to controlling the noise level during the wedding. With that said, if you have a rowdy crowd and want loud music. Forest Hill Association - Neighborhood Performance Project - Venues & Event Spaces Near Me - San Francisco, California

we rented it for an 8th grade graduation and I would say NEVER again. They are completely unreasonable: 1.) Noise level. We had the DJ use the preset speakers to max noise level at the association standards (Which is below a level of enjoyment btw) Because a neighbor is reported to have complained about noise (we r talking at 7 pm!) though, they kept our deposit. No proof of noise and in fact testimonials that noise only through preset speakers!) Wish we had just cranked up the music and enjoyed the place as I have since learned these neighbors complain for EVERY event, so the "fine" for noise is just to pay the legal fees for on the association for one crazy neighbor's legal maneuvers. 2.) rules strict about departure time so kids all picked up but as there is no parking or room at pick up curb for more than two cars, there was a bit of traffic in the 30 mins of pick up window. Neighbors complained again and decided to fine more---again not in contract nor with reasonable alternative available nor any proof of costs incurred, witnesses, etc. Parents picking up kids. Really wild n crazy bunch!??! 3.). Group Didn't even use the kitchen at all--no food prep at all! yet they kept cleaning deposit despite an end of evening "inspection" that said everything was fine/in order. Our neighbors have since advised that they have been discouraged to use the venue due to all the controversy and a nutty neighbor to the assn building making everyone crazy. It used to add a neighborhood feel and drive up home values---now it's the opposite. I would NOT recommend renting the venue, I would recommend the association deal with the crazy neighbor more proactively, and I would NOT consider this a selling point for the neighborhood if looking in the area. If you do rent it, don't plan on getting a deposit back and just crank up the music! read more

DO NOT DO YOUR WEDDING HERE!!!!! Don't be fooled by the charm and affordability of this venue! We did our wedding here last year and really liked the venue, but the management of the people running it was a nightmare and they were argumentative and threatened to cancel are wedding. The Lady running it is a total bitch and a nightmare to work with. There rules made it so we could not use candles, could not bring in additional lighting and the worst thing there sound rules where so bad that it was impossible to have the music at a volume loud enough to even dance to. We managed the best we could with the situation and still had a nice wedding, but I can not stress enough to not use this venue unless you want to deal with very rude people, constant headaches, way to many rules and no dancing at your wedding!!! read more

Today I spoke with Cindy Boudreau and she gave me the following quotes for wedding receptions: Friday, Saturday and Sunday receptions run $1500 for 8 hours. Music must stop and guests must leave at 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Caterers, etc. will have another hour ('til 12am) to clean up and leave. Mondays through Thursdays, receptions run $800 for 8 hours. Music must stop and guests must leave at 10pm for Mon-Thurs receptions ***and for Sunday receptions***. Caterers, etc. will have another hour ('til 11pm) to clean up and leave. ____________________________________________________ Points of note from Cindy during our call: "During your reception, you will have use of the clubhouse, fireplace, piano, library tables and kitchen. " "The Clubhouse does not provide folding chairs, (other) tables, linens, etc." "There should be no more than 85 people attending the reception for a sit down dinner." "This is a residential neighborhood, so it is not the place for very loud music or guests who want to make a whole lot of noise." The short answer is that FHCH is a fine place for a small wedding. Throw a tent up on the patio and youre in business. Although the woman who was the site manager on the day of the event, might honestly be the biggest b*tch I've ever met in my life. (-1 star for her). Even though we made it clear that we had staff that were about to arrive to take down our decorations, Susan got in our faces and harassed us as we got in our car to leave on our honeymoon. The next day we called her because we thought we were missing something and she refused to talk to us and literally was screaming at the top of her lungs over a simple missing box. Just had my wedding here. I'm an SF native, and this place was very "me". I wanted a garden themed wedding that was low-key, I like Maybeck architecture, I like the neighborhood, I like that there is ample street parking, and I like that you don't have a bunch of lookey-loos walking by. It is not a place to have a raucous wedding with dancing and loud music. It is a place to have a bit less traditional wedding; maybe an afternoon wedding or a champagne reception. It is definitely not a place for more than 75ish guests (they say 85, but there will be very little wiggle room, and there are just 3 toilets). It is a place to have an intimate wedding, a party where you talk a lot with your guests. There are quite a few rules and regulations, but nothing unmanageable. The price is good for San Francisco, especially for the amount of hours. They have a list of recommended caterers, but you are not required to use only those. You do have to bring in everything, and no cooking can be done in the kitchen, so keep that in mind too. This venue is not for everyone, but it might be right for you. It was for me. read more

Attended a 30-year wedding anniversary at this beautiful little gem in the heart of Forest Hill (give your guest directions--it's hard to find!). They can give you recommendations for caterers to use and the place can accomodate up to about 100 people for any kind of party. The big fireplace was a treat on a foggy day, and when it's sunny, the garden area would be lovely as well. The house itself was designed by Bernard Maybeck and built in 1919 by volunteers from the area and features a lofty meeting room with a great exposed beam ceiling. We were looking to have an outdoor ceremony and indoor/outdoor reception and went to check out the Forest Hill Clubhouse for our wedding. It's a lovely and well taken care of garden, terrace, and historic clubhouse in a quiet residential neighborhood. The clubhouse is an Arts and Crafts design by Maybeck (of Swedenborgian Church), and is both rustic and lovely, an ideal place to hold a reception. After reading some of the reviews,we came in prepared, but the clubhouse doesn't have any crazy restrictions or crazy people (at least not anymore?). We met with Janette, the events coordinator, who was as easygoing as can be. Janette was very flexible with us, and the restrictions were minimal and reasonable. We could chose any caterer we liked. We could bring in a band if we wanted to. We could transform the place to our heart's desire. It's a historical house, and in a residential neighborhood so no "clubbing", but that's not who we are to begin with. We didn't feel like we'd be compromising in any way to have our wedding at Forest Hill Clubhouse. This place is a hidden gem and the rental fee is a steal for SF! And while we ended up choosing a venue outside of SF, it wasn't because Forest Hill Clubhouse was restrictive or lacking in any way. This place might be just right for you, so go check it out. We couldn't find enough wedding pictures online, so go take a look. We recommend it whole-heartedly. read more

I live in Texas and my husband and I wanted to have a destination wedding and we decided on SF since we both love it there!! I came upon this venue online and looked at the photos and youtube video and we loved it..... it was everything we were looking for. We also booked this place without visiting it in person. We made a trip a couple months later to SF and saw this venue and it looked just like the pictures if not better!! We hired Janette as our day of coordinator and she was amazing!! I showed her what look I wanted for my decorations and flowers and she made it happen! This venue is absolutely beautiful and I loved the rustic look of it! It matched perfectly with our theme. Our wedding was about 40people and this venue was the perfect size for us. We had our ceremony outdoors on the patio and our reception inside the clubhouse. The weather in September was great and I really liked that we could hold our wedding at one place. It made it really easy for our guests! There was also plenty of parking there, which really helped out! I am extremely happy we chose this place, our intimate wedding was beautiful. We all had an amazing time and you should book Janette as your coordinator (she even gave us ideas for our Maui honeymoon, those shows did not dissapoint!) I've been here before, but I can't recall the occasion. Visited a few weeks ago to attend a performance. Great acoustics and charming decor. It's very obvious that neighborhood association values the venue and puts a lot of effort into making good use of space. I would highly recommend checking it out for wedding venue for less than 100 in SF. Rental rates are extremely reasonable compared to other venues in city. read more

Like many who have reviewed here, we wanted a place for an outdoor reception and an indoor wedding - and one that wouldn't have too many steps for grandmothers to traverse. Additionally, we wanted to keep our wedding as 'no fuss, no muss' as possible - and we wanted a place that wouldn't need too much decoration. From the very start, the Forest Hill Club House was incredible - charm, check. Ambiance, check. Moreover, we couldn't have asked for better communication from Jutta; she answered messages with alacrity and charm, to boot. On the day-of, our manager, Kelly, went above and beyond in making the day special for us. We could not have asked for a better venue or more delightful people running it. We recently had a baby shower celebration at the Forest Hill Clubhouse. The remodeled Maybeck clubhouse is charming. It is very well equipped with a great new kitchen and new bathrooms. It was a beautiful day, so we enjoyed the outdoor space as well as indoors. The children (and their parents) had a blast! As the day cooled down we had the fireplace turned on by the onsite manager. It was pretty cozy! All in all, it was very nice to have our event at this gem! I highly recommend it! read more

Very cool space!! I used to hang out at the house of a friend who used to live across the street from this place and noticed all the events that occurred here. Last night was the first time I'd ever set foot inside though. The man & I went to my work's not-so-silent auction here. There was a jump house in the garden area, a little area inside set up for the band, tables for sitting, mingling, and eating, tables for the bid sheets, and upstairs space for the magician. The weather was absolutely perfect last night too so everyone was spaced out and no one felt cramped at all. People were mingling outside and inside. It was great! I love the building though. It's got an old-time, rustic feel to it. I would definitely consider this place for a nice, small wedding though. read more

We were looking for a quaint little spot in The City that could handle an outdoor wedding and an indoor reception and this place fit the bill perfectly. Organizing it was smooth, never a hassle. The rental was for eight hours which can be tough dealing with set up but you can add time for an additional cost. The caretaker is a bit gruff and to the point but nothing rude or unmanagable. The clubhouse is rustic so if you are looking for modern stay away. The vaulted ceiling with exposed beams and the working fireplace give it a warm and intimate feel. There is an upstairs balcony you can use for storage or set up. Parking is not an issue as there is plenty of street parking in the neighborhood. Did I mention the fireplace? This thing is roaring and can put off some serious heat. The bathrooms could use some sprucing up but the size of the upstairs one is large enough to use as a changing room. It can be a bit tricky for guests to find it. The room can be a bit dark but there are plenty of windows to open since you can not use candles. Speaking of dark this area can be a bit foggy., cold and windy late in the day. The building was designed by Bernard Maybeck, who also designed the Palace of Fine Arts, so that gives it a bit grandeur. read more

After searching out many venues here in San Francisco we found the Forest Hill Clubhouse and couldn't be more thrilled! The rental cost was half of almost every venue in the city. We had 75 guests and found it to be the perfect size for our wedding. Cindy was a joy to work with, and was very up-front about some minor restrictions. (This is in a VERY residential neighborhood and they are conscious of being good neighbors and keeping the volumes at a reasonable level.) It is a little hidden so figure that into your start times for events as you guests might need a little more time to arrive. It was a great experience and I would love to host another event there in the future! read more

I have worked at the Forest Hill Clubhouse several times and love the charm of the place. It is an oasis from the city that is cozy and charming. As a florist and event designer this place lends itself to special events where you want to have a unique setting. Yes, like many other venues they have their set of rules but being accustomed to that, it is not out of the ordinary and easy to navigate through. Jutta, the venue coordinator, is great to work with. This place is beautiful and the building was the reason I chose it. But if I could take it back I would. Janette, the wedding planner seems kind at first, but come the days of, she did not know how to manage a wedding, blamed everything on our family and friends, was rude to our guests and friends who helped us with catering and cake. She threw away many many of my decorations to "clean up" before 10 pm when we had paid until 11pm. She constantly told us she was easy going, but in the end told friends and family members to shut up, yelling it at the top of her lungs, told my mom and mother in law to get out of her space, blamed us for everything saying we were too loud and too many people. When we first rented the venue we asked about DJ, 200 people (ended up being 150) and mariachi. She seemed so excited and "easy going" about it. But then we were too loud. What wedding party doesn't want to dance and have fun??? It's truly sad that she does not know how to manage. I am not a wedding planner, but I know that managers would never yell at people. I assumed that it was because we weren't white and that neighborhood is predominantly white people with money. This venue ended up costing us a lot more than what was stated. Deposit was taken, an extra $500 "set up fee" which should have been spoken of before, and all of the items I brought to decorate that were found in the garbage by my family and friends. So sad that such a beautiful place is ran by a person that is unprofessional. Spend your money else wear please! read more

My first yelp review. Very unclear and unhelpful rules. It is difficult to work with the maintainers of the property. Rude and flip interactions with the FH president and staff. They wanted to charge double the contractually agreed amount in a passive/aggressive way to say we do not want your event in our clubhouse. Clearly a generation gap played a part in the lack of communication and/or understanding on the maintainers part. What would have been nice is for the maintainers to be more accurate in what events are welcome so expectations are expressed at the beginning so planners are given the immediate opportunity to strike this place off the list. Thank goodness there are a lot of beautiful and easy to work with venues in San Francisco. We eventually had to move to a much more accommodating venue, the day before my wife's memorial, and I would suggest you do the same. We found many wonderfully welcoming venues that are a pleasure to work with and gave us full breath to conceive and commensurate my wife's memorial as we wished. read more

We found both Janette Najar, the Manager of Forest Hill Clubhouse, and the venue to be absolutely charming and perfect for our wedding reception. Janette worked with us every step of the way as our event planner, and was exceptionally creative and very artsy in her suggestions. The venue itself is not only a historic gem in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods of San Francisco, but is well maintained with lovely gardens surrounding it, and the ambiance to suit any special occasion. It is also a great bargain, and can easily fit 100 individuals. Our event was held from 5 PM-10 PM on a Saturday evening, and flowed perfectly..starting with a jazz trio (Grant Levin), and then morphing into a DJ (Denon & Doyle) with a photo booth (we highly recommend having a photo booth...people LOVED it), food and bar by Salt and Honey Catering, and brought in both vintage and garden furniture to set the tone for the terrace. Janette added the touches that also make a big difference: a beautiful reception book, gorgeous flowers, personalized candle tins, lighting, and continual attention to detail as the event unfolded. We also added heat lamps for the terrace, and these were welcomed and appreciated by all. Contrary to a review on Yelp from 2009, the management has changed, and we found Janette to be extremely professional and well organized. Open candles are not allowed in the venue due to the decor (wood), but Janette offered alternatives that resulted in beautiful lighting both indoors and out on the terrace. The kitchen has been recently remodeled and was also just perfect for our needs. We ended at 10 PM, as stipulated in the agreement due to the HOA regulations in the neighborhood...a genuinely delightful venue. Many of our guests commented that they'd never realized that the Forest Hill Clubhouse even existed, as it seems to still somehow be somewhat of a 'secret discovery' here in the Bay Area. We'd bet that this venue will not be a secret much longer, as it is just a hidden gem! read more

I live in Forest Hill Extension so it was a perfect location fro my sons first birthday. The venue is amazing, however"event person" Janette Najar is unprofessional and not transparent. The initial quote that I received from her had three different sections with many of the same services or rental products. I requested a time and date to meet with her to go over the quote and she cancelled the day of so we scheduled a call. On our call I had pointed out some redundancies, she said that she did not have the quote in front of her and does not understand what I was referring to. She then ended the call answering none of my questions. A updated quote was sent to me, however it was not better than the first. Not only did her quotes not make sense but she also invoiced us AFTER the party.We had already agreed on a price and paid her in full weeks prior and she sent us an additional invoice for little add on products that she chose to add. This invoice came to me after I had sent her a email requesting that we get a refund for the water and juice dispenser that we did not use (since it was absolutely unsanitary). Because of my poor experience with Janette, I wanted to reach out to the board to see if some of the items that she charged were in fact hers to rent out (such as the tables and chairs). She refused to give me the contact which I find to be pretty shady. read more

I photographed two Bat Mitzvahs at the Forest Hill Clubhouse (I am a professional wedding and portrait photographer). This place is great! The outdoor patio has great lighting and with the flowers in bloom, it makes for a great backdrop for family portraits. The space inside can be styled and used in different ways. The two events I worked at had different set ups, but equally beautiful. Inside, the hall is dark, but a professional photographer who is well experienced can set up lighting and transform the space to capture all the fun. Finally, Jutta, the venue coordinator, is a gem: friendly and prepared. I highly recommend this space for your wedding or event. read more

I love the Forest Hill Clubhouse! I have been catering events here for the past few years and highly recommend this venue to clients who are looking for an affordable place with both a gorgeous outdoor space and a cozy indoor space. The kitchen is totally functional for both cocktail parties and buffet or family style dinners. Jutta, the current venue coordinator, is extremely helpful in guiding clients through the process of event planning and has a great list of preferred vendors to chose from. This space has a ton of built in charm and you can enhance it with your choice of additional lighting and decor. A total gem! read more

What's not to like?? Oh yeah...those who are looking for a place to really "blow it out" with an excessive number of their too-loud friends. They need to keep looking. But, if you aren't in that category and have enough brain cells to adapt to the requirements of an historic and architecturally significant building then this spot is among the city's finest. True, no candles, but if you've been out of the house in the last few years, you know there are really good electric candles now...they work. Be prepared to rent/bring any equipment you need. There are some folding chairs but they're at best functional. Spring for some interior furnishings/flowers and you'll have one of the nicest places around for your event...particularly if you are lucky enough to draw beautiful weather for the extra beautiful, tree-lined brick patio. I've had six or eight events here over the years and no complaints. It's CLEAR up-front what the rules are...no open flame (including candles), no late night noise, nothing hanging from the walls, no cooking in the catering kitchen, take away your own trash...all common sense and easy to comply with. This is a special building in a very quiet neighborhood of luxury homes; if that's not what you need, there are lots of places in SOMA. If you go here and make a mess or get too loud (some people's definition of "fun") you'll have a problem and this venue is not for your group. As for the staff, there is always an on-site manager during the event and I've yet to have one who was not helpful. Jutta, the manager, is great to work with - no BS, just get the job done. I suspect those who have found the management difficult were, in fact, the source of the problem - a bit too dull to realize what rules are. read more

We had our wedding reception here after our plans with a restaurant fell through. It ended up being short notice but Jutta, the manager, was very accommodating. The place itself is very beautiful, and had plenty of room for our guests. The location also has a piano which Jutta was able to get tuned under very short notice. There are restrictions on loudness but we had a jazz pianist and a friend playing the trumpet there and it wasn't a problem. We also had amplified music later in the evening that wasn't an issue either. Even though the clubhouse was not our first choice, hindsight is 20/20 and we are sooo glad we ended up using this venue. read more

Got the place for a wedding and Janethe the manager told us she will give us back the $750 downpayment for four hours blocked for our event, she will only give back $150 back but only ask for 4 hours time. Let me tell you her words she will open the place for us for 3 ish and we paid the 4 to 9 so we can be able put our decoration but we got there by 3:30pm the cocktail table was not put out and the chairs she put it out her self. It took me about 8 months to figure out if we wanted to have a wedding and specifically where we wanted to have it. We ran across the Forest Hill Association Clubhouse online through a wedding website and was drawn to its beauty. The association stopped allowing non-FHA members to rent out the venue, but my husband and I got a phone call from the coordinator asking for last calls on booking as a non-member. This is when we felt it was time to commit to a venue, and we were both so happy with deciding on the Forest Hill Clubhouse. Beyond this venue looking like it belongs in Fantasyland, our Day-of-Coordinator and Facilities Manager, Janette Najar, really was like our fairy godmother. She made this whole planning process super stress-free and enjoyable for us. I only needed to explain things one time, and everything would just click for her. She gave us advice from Day 1 of signing with her, comforted us through this whole process, and made our wedding look incredible. I just gave her some pinterest pictures and the decorations, and she made everything look EXACTLY like the pinterest pictures. She has a rare keen sense of detail and genuinely cares so much for her clients' happiness. She doesn't do shortcuts and she delivers beyond your expectations. I couldn't have asked for a better coordinator. In addition to managing the clubhouse, she runs her own wedding planning/coordination/floral business. I have hosted three events so far at the Clubhouse and it has been great every time. The building accommodates a pretty large group and the price is very fair for what you get. It's located in a great neighborhood and really gives you the feeling of being away from it all in the forest. I would highly recommend this space as an option for anybody! read more

I had my husband's 50th birthday party there with 75 guests, and I was thrilled with the warm, rustic ambience of the Forest Hill Clubhouse. Many of my guests were asking how I found it (through my caterer). It is charming, and the management is friendly and easy to work with. It's also affordable! We wanted to evening to feel intimate, and natural to California, rather than slick or formal. I would do another party there in a heartbeat. read more
