Feeling overly compelled to respond to the poor reviews, I will grin and bear temptation to take the higher ground and speak only of my experience. Perched atop a large knoll, where 85th avenue runs perpendicular I have located my latest and thus far, greatest local dog park find. Three individual levels allows dog owners to roam the modest grounds without the fear of an accidental slip, leading to a 100 yard downhill tumble. The fences, the small retaining walls, obstacle course and most every attribute of K9 Forest Park Dog Run is all built, repaired, improved and maintained by the good volunteers of this closely knit dog run. The water is not yet turned on, but will be soon. The bags for cleanup are not NYS Parks Department provided, volunteers supply them. Then they empty the poo filled GI cans. I can hardly imagine how some people can review so poorly, clearly not aware if what else is out there. Awesome people, sweet dogs of many breeds, shapes and sizes, all having fun, under the sun.

So friendly and cute here! I love how dog owners are super nice and communal. There is also two different areas for big and small dogs.

It's a dog's world…read more For the longest time I thought the only outlet for canine social interaction for my dog would be the microscopic strip of dirt in Veteran's Grove that left me wondering "why bother"? Still, I kept taking her there every now and then, even though she always needed a bath afterward from all the loose dirt, if only just to get her out and interacting with other dogs. I eventually got fed up with it, and the lack of playmates (I'd be lucky if there was even one other dog there), and took to Yelp to find an alternative. So I found Sherry Park. By far better than a dirt patch, it's a healthy-sized concrete park encircled by benches, trees and several chess-top tables, with a tree-covered hillside at the far end. Even better, almost always a steady rotation of dogs coming and going, or, as far as my dog's concerned, some fresh new butts to sniff. Notable features include: a sturdy double-gate entry (keep one closed at all times, or one of the more dedicated regulars will pounce!), a water fountain that serves both human and canine alike, water hoses, kiddie pools, brooms and scoops. It is right at the crossroads of the BQE, Queens Blvd and the LIRR, but despite that the road noise isn't terrible. It's *just* far enough away to be too far for me to walk, but close enough to be a quick bike ride, so I invested in a backpack dog carrier and make it a point to come spend a few hours here every weekend and let my dog fulfill her weekly butt-sniffing quota and run away from dogs half her size.

The Hell Gate, with its big red steel arch, actually looks damn impressive, especially when the light hits it right around sunset. This park just kind of sits there letting the water run by and wether walking by or just sitting down, its an impressive and calming place with the right person on a midsummer night. You walk along the concrete promenade by the railing and you see all kinds of people. Couples taking pictures, kids yelling, guys sitting on benches thinking about whatever. It's got these giant green lawns where people just lay around. I hear that there's this massive outdoor pool that gets completely jammed in the summer, but I've never been nor do i intend to. It's just grass, trees, a breeze off the water, and trains occasionally rumbling over the bridge high above your head. It kills me how peaceful it can get right under all that heavy machinery. If you have to be around people in Queens, this is probably one of the least depressing places to do it. It really is.

I admit the parking lot, in the midst of the city noise and overflowing rubbish bins, made me a tad hesitant to get out of the car at first, but it gradually dawned on me how the character of the park changed as we walked further away from parking and into the trails lined with mature tall trees. I love nature and appreciate green spaces, so parks like this usually hold a special place. I hope they continue to maintain the park and I hope many more people will cherish its presence.

So I'm starting out by praising the park as a concert venue to make up for my gripes about Central Park and PNC Bank Arts Center. I enjoyed the free De La Soul show here, which had good sound quality and a pleasant setup where you could opt for a close-up viewing of Eye Know and Me Myself and I or just roam around and still hear it. I wish I remembered who had the Yelp reviews that mostly focused on bathrooms, but park regulars know about the bathroom sort of near the LIRR train. It's not as glamorous or as clean as Bryant Park but it's mostly ok and open later than one might expect. The park isn't offering a wilderness facsimile like parts of Prospect Park but you can see birds and there are nice plants. The Unisphere is legendary.

Five, structurally intact, well placed wooden benches allow for panoramic views or just a spot to plop down for a moment. The secondary and smaller fenced in section provides small dog owners the option if the full size portion had large breeds playing roughly. The street light on the landing of the stairwell of the bridge allows significant illumination inside the park. The double gates is exactly what all dog runs should incorporate into their infrastructure. Allowing the dog owner to leash or unleash in this quite ample staging area. Eight foot high fences insulates any dog from harm that may occur from the outskirts and keep potential riff raff on the outside. The golden doodle bit my dogs ear and the owner did not restrain him until later on when he saw the bleeding and that I was trying to leash up my pup. When I had my back turned, he left the park swiftly with his dog. Will not return to this park and I would avoid that dog if you see him.
