We chose to start the loop to the left, and it seemed average for the length of the initial straight-stretch. But as soon as the trail turned and headed up it became so much more entertaining. The path winds through and around gorgeous old trees and provides fabulous root-art on which to walk. It's a fun trail with great shade...twists and turns, ups and downs. The footing is definitely uneven much of the way, so you've got to watch where you're going, but that just adds to the enjoyment for me. There's a decent amount of pull-off parking right at the trailhead. I didn't really have high expectations as we just happened upon the trail. But I was very pleasantly surprised...happy accident!

Perhaps even a primary home as well but I do like living in a large metro area because of the various services and entertainment options at your disposal. I have been to this Natural Area twice now and it's just so beautiful! The first time I really took advantage of taking pictures of the lighthouse here as well as the view. The second time was a repeat of that particular activity but in addition to that we went down to the tide pools and were immediately entranced with all of the aquatic life in those pools. We took pictures of that and were just so revitalized immersing ourselves in the nature there. I t was beautiful and simply amazing. Really nothing else needs to be said other than if you are touring along the Oregon Coast and are hitting the lighthouses this is a must stop... well they all are actually but this one really is. There is another lighthouse on the south end of town so Newport has scenic and at another time more practical advantage of having two lighthouses in the same town all within very close proximity. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is truly a beautiful place!

We were here close to low tide, so that helped improve our tide pool experience, but you can't go wrong fitting this into your schedule while on the coast!

At the top of the hill is the Cape Perpetua Overlook day use area. It costs $5, and there's plenty of parking and a vault toilet. There's also a map of the trails by the pay station. The views from up there are amazing! The trails are well maintained. Don't forget to check out the cool West Shelter observation point! On the other side of highway 101 is a trail to Devils Churn, Cook's Chasm, and Spouting Horn. All must-sees! The dramatic views change depending on high and low tides. We always make a point to stop here while visiting the area, any time of year. It never disappoints. Highly recommend!

I'll do this review in two parts. First part is for the state park side. There is ample parking at…read morethe park entrance and the restrooms are right beside the parking. Very easy beach access. You can easily walk to the beach in about three minutes from the time you park until the time that you touch sand. For the campground. Wow - there are a TON of camping sites. They really packed them in here. Located at the front is the check-in desk, trash & recycling, and a welcome center. At the welcome center, the staff are incredibly friendly and they sell firewood and ice during their business hours. If you camp in the spots near the park entrance, you will be blown away...literally. The wind is super strong right off the ocean. You will get a view of the ocean but you might freeze in a tent. The other camping spots are locate back away from the road and won't have a view. We reserved a spot, all the way at the very east back end of the campground. This meant that we had a short drive in past all of the other campsites. The road is paved but is narrow and had many bumps and potholes. It might be a tight fit for big trucks and big rigs. The yurt that we stayed in definitely could fit 5 people comfortably. It came with a small table with two chairs, a bunch bed with a queen on bottom and twin/full on top, plus an additional queen futon. The mattress is VERY firm and you will need you own linens and bedding. Highly recommend bringing a comforter to put under your sheets because the bed stays very cold. There is only ONE outlet in the entire place and one cadet heater. There was mold growing on the interior of the fabric of the yurt itself. So, this is not ideal for those with allergies, immune compromised, etc. The spot did have electricity, a fire pit, a water spigot, and a picnic table. However, there was literally nothing separating us from the campsite right next to us and we literally shared each meal with the strangers next to us. Why there is not bushes in between the campgrounds is shocking to me. The campsites are so on top of one another that you can hear what your neighbors are saying at a whisper, verbatim. It is very heavily wooded inside and is quite dark most of the time. The sun will come through in spots throughout the day. There is also an animal issue here so you cannot leave your coolers out or the raccoons etc. will get inside of them. The restrooms were well stocked and plenty. There were also plenty of showers. The showers have low heads and will not be ideal for those over 5'9". Overall is a pretty nice place to camp, but I would want to book all of the sites around mine next time to have some semblance of peace and privacy. Great access to so many beach and activities. Less than 10 minutes away from Walmart and shopping in Newport.

Do you enjoy dipping your feet into cold water on a hot summer day? Or how about swimming among giant redwood trees? If any of this sounds appealing you need to visit Sweet Creek Falls. We came in the middle of summer and it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon hiking, meditating, and swimming. There are 11 waterfalls ranging in size and close to 2.5 miles all together of shaded trails to explore, rustic bridges included. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Oregon last summer. Know before you go: Parking lots at each trailhead. Super stinky bathroom located only at Homestead Trailhead. Dog friendly. And most importantly FREE! *Don't be surprised to see topless women swimming. We all have breasts and it's a beautiful thing to be free especially in a place like this. If this bothers you just look away. *Don't use Yelp directions as they'll take you to the wrong place. Use Google instead. I've reported this several times but like nearly everything I report Yelp ignores it. And Happy Earth Day! If you haven't discovered what nature can do for your soul I highly recommend getting away from the daily grind, turning your phone off, and just enjoying what places like this can do for you. There are so many photo opportunities. Many different bridges along the trail allow you to walk over the water. There is a part of the trail where you have to walk through a small stream. I wasn't wearing the proper gear and didn't want wet shoes and socks, so we headed back at that point and headed towards the upper parking lot. The upper trail still had snow on the ground, and the parking area was pretty soggy. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. We would love to come back again during a drier season. Highly recommend!

There are a few benches along the trail where you can sit and relax and take in the gorgeous ocean view. It's most popular in the mornings, for tidepools, and evenings, for beautiful sunsets. The trail is pretty flat and expands about 2 miles. It connects to a couple of other trails in Yachats to the south, the Oregon Coast Trail (1 mile) and the Amanda Trail (1 mile). The trails are well maintained and perfect for a casual walk to take in the fresh ocean air. I would highly recommend!

This is probably my #1 fave trail of all time. It's not technically difficult by any means - it's short, almost entirely flat, and very well maintained. But it holds my heart bc there's a veritable feast for my lens in every nook and cranny and the environment changes year after year due to storms, tides, and sand levels rising and falling - a never ending photographer's paradise! And no doubt I'll be returning year after year for a long time. The trail runs about 1.5 miles from the sleepy coastal town of Yachats to its dead-end on a long sandy beach in the Cape Perpetua protected marine area. To say the tide pools here are amazing is an understatement. They are unparalleled! I've never seen so many colorful starfish, anemones, snails, barnacles, and tons of other undersea creepy crawlers anywhere else. The sunset and sunrise views are magical as well. And there are interesting pockets and tunnels created by mysterious wind swept coastal pines - just glorious! The giant dark basalt boulders are covered in so many species of barnacles and always changing shape due to erosion from wind and waves - creating so many fascinating pools to explore. The trail meanders past my fave hotel of all time too - the Overleaf Lodge. This is my happy place - my heart is always here. If you ever have the chance to visit, take it.

We were unsure about the parking situation so we decided on the far end of the aquarium lot and walked to the bay from there. The out & back trail is paved most of the way, turning to gravel near the end. It's less than a mile one way, and flat and easy for anyone to enjoy. Birds are plentiful and the bay is gorgeous. We spent quite a bit of time watching all the different species enjoying the serenity of the estuary. There are a few educational signs along the way that we found useful while trying to decide what birds we were seeing. It's a lovely and quiet spot...bring your sunblock, camera, and binoculars!!

She was able to describe things for me, a novice adventurer, but also went into depth on some plants, which was great for my husband, who knows a bit more than I do. We didn't go off trail too much, except for a couple of mushroom clusters that were found (which we kept and tried that night!) , and thankfully the trail was pretty even, so not a ton of hills or anything!
