Aside from great people, you will find produce, hand-crafts, meals, baked goods, coffee, Kombucha and more that I have probably overlooked. What you won't find is dogs. Sadly, dogs are not allowed. Even nice ones. But now let's talk about goats. Get this: The market opens every year in April (I think) with a goat parade!!!!!!!!! Mind blown. A goat parade? Yes! Goats marching to music! I arrived late, so some stalls were starting to pack up. I counted about three produce stalls. They also have the typical stalls for honey, or cheese, or cookies/pastries, etc. They also have the non-food items such as pottery. I chose a couple of sweet treats of frosting cookies from "Darlene's Baked Goods"; Darlene was also very nice. I am also looking forward to seeing Port Gardner Crafts in the future. I like their thin wall potteries and hope to find a large size mug in the future. If I am already in the area, it is worth a visit. I would not purposely drive here for the market.

Some grocery stores really stretch the definition of "local" to somehow mean selling fruits from California, but this market enforces a tighter definition of local meaning exclusively from Washington state farmers. The market is well spaced so that while it's busy, you're not packed cheek to jowl, and there's room to form orderly queues. The only downside of this market and the main reason I don't visit more often is that getting here poses some challenges. The light rail doesn't go here (I'm still waiting for a legitimate ETA for the Ballard Link Extension, really, how long can 8 miles take??) and finding parking is a nightmare. The other reason is that I'm always so tempted to over buy the hot foods and bakery goods since everything smells so amazing here!

Subsequently, I lost some interest since I don't live nearby. While I was in Ballard on a recent Sunday, I rushed to the market to see if it was still open. Officially, it was not; they closed at 2pm. But they were still packing up. I believe they are not allowed to sell after the official closing time; I asked one vendor, they declined. The staff wants the streets to reopen as soon as possible. As I walked the two blocks, several vendors still have some items on display on their tables. With a bit of wink, wink, accidentally dropping cash on the table and accidentally taking things off the table, I walked away with goodies. I won't say what I bought to avoid anyone getting into trouble. Street parking was easy enough nearby on a Sunday.
