Some grocery stores really stretch the definition of "local" to somehow mean selling fruits from California, but this market enforces a tighter definition of local meaning exclusively from Washington state farmers. The market is well spaced so that while it's busy, you're not packed cheek to jowl, and there's room to form orderly queues. The only downside of this market and the main reason I don't visit more often is that getting here poses some challenges. The light rail doesn't go here (I'm still waiting for a legitimate ETA for the Ballard Link Extension, really, how long can 8 miles take??) and finding parking is a nightmare. The other reason is that I'm always so tempted to over buy the hot foods and bakery goods since everything smells so amazing here!

Subsequently, I lost some interest since I don't live nearby. While I was in Ballard on a recent Sunday, I rushed to the market to see if it was still open. Officially, it was not; they closed at 2pm. But they were still packing up. I believe they are not allowed to sell after the official closing time; I asked one vendor, they declined. The staff wants the streets to reopen as soon as possible. As I walked the two blocks, several vendors still have some items on display on their tables. With a bit of wink, wink, accidentally dropping cash on the table and accidentally taking things off the table, I walked away with goodies. I won't say what I bought to avoid anyone getting into trouble. Street parking was easy enough nearby on a Sunday.

I accompanied my friend here who lives in nearby First Hill, so it constitutes the surrounding area mentioned but is all the more welcomed now as aside from the QFC in the area, there are few options for food shopping. My friend picked up some fresh radishes, mushrooms and tasty homemade hummus from the various vendors in attendance. We also got a veggie panini from a griller vendor at the market. Overall, the market is on the small side focusing primarily on produce over products and other miscellaneous sometimes seen at the larger ones. This is kind of nice as there is a lower amount of foot traffic, but the options are more limited. Decent Farmers Market though if you have a fairly small list of things, you need without wandering too much.

They also have the typical stalls for honey, or cheese, or cookies/pastries, etc. They also have the non-food items such as pottery. I chose a couple of sweet treats of frosting cookies from "Darlene's Baked Goods"; Darlene was also very nice. I am also looking forward to seeing Port Gardner Crafts in the future. I like their thin wall potteries and hope to find a large size mug in the future. If I am already in the area, it is worth a visit. I would not purposely drive here for the market.

Today I managed a small haul of produce (bean varieties from Garden Treasures Nursery & Organic Farm and more different beans from Alvarez Organic Farms - both had nice staff who shared eating ideas); oh and a small sample of ginger peach muffins from Liberated Foods. As far as my list, very solid! Next time planning to get some greens and garlic. They are limited with vegan eats and home decor votives (which are super rare in these markets I've seen, if at all).

I decided to visit when I read a pop-up food booth will be there. The market itself was larger than I expected. The size is about two long blocks' length with booths on both sides. Other than farmer stalls, they had a good mix of food booths/trucks selling hot foods, bakery stalls, food stands selling sweets like cookies, non-food stalls selling handmade crafts. They even have a band. It's just me, but I'm ok without a band unless they are volunteers. If some of the booth fees pay for the band, then keeping the cost low is good, too. We arrived at 12:20, ate lunch, then wandered the booths and shopped. The traffic at the hot food trucks/stalls have decreased significantly by then. We found plenty of options buying goodies. I hesitated on the veggies. They look good, but prices are steep. The fruits were surprisingly more reasonable. I know I will return. Dogs under watchful eyes are ok. See red sign in photos.
