For better or worse, I end up wearing the penguin suit 5-6 times per year so it makes sense to own. The one I have had for 15+ years was in rough shape so I decided it was time to replace. I'm not a fashion guy but I want to look respectable and that's basically what I shared with Donnie at FMT. He took things from there and got me a tailored tux that makes me look nice and stylish without spending $3K. I spent about half that and believe even that was a bargain because FMT gets some discount for buying in bulk. We went through Formally Modern for my wedding my in July. While my experience with them wasn't great, it was good enough and our tux looked great on the big day. I don't feel like writing three reviews for the locations we worked with, but the Lincoln Park and Orland Park location were great. I'm leaving three stars mainly because the Aurora location was a bit difficult to work with. The groomsmen got fitted for their suits about 6 months prior to the event. It was pretty easy to set up an appointment and this all went smooth. However, they didn't communicate with me that we had to put down a deposit to hold on to the suits for our wedding. So when my groomsmen went to the Aurora location to get fitted, they asked for a deposit and I was unaware of this. I had told the groomsmen that they didn't need to put any money down. So that was one bump in the road. We rented our suits, and price seemed fair considering I didnt even look anywhere else because Formally Modern had the white coat that I was looking for so didn't even bother looking elsewhere. We were able to pick up our tuxedos a day or two prior to the wedding. During pick up, we were able to try on the tux to make sure it fit and to make any last second adjustments. I had my trousers adjusted a bit and I'm glad they did. Otherwise, they'd be way too short. The Aurora location didn't have the shoes for my groomsmen, but luckily, the location in Lincoln park had a ton of sizes still so I was able to pick them up for my groomsmen. Day of wedding was great. Except one of my groomsmen who wasn't able to pick up his tux was missing a bow tie (because of course lol). So we were scrambling a bit 2 hours prior to the wedding but the Lincoln Park location was very apologetic and was able to send someone to drop off a bow tie for him! We weren't too far from Lincoln Park so that was nice. Overall, great experience and would highly recommend working with the Lincoln park location! read more

I was tasked with renting a tuxedo at this location. The gentleman that fitted me was nice enough. Now fast forward to wearing this tux. Pants were il fitting and felt cheap. Button studs didn't match the rest of the wedding party and shoes that a fellow groomsman wore were busted on the bottom. For $180 bucks this was not only more than I have ever paid for a tuxedo rental but by far the worst quality I have come across. Save yourself and go somewhere else. read more

We were in & out in a nice short time, and in that time we found a great style, found a vest that matched my dress almost exactly, & got my now-husband measured. Every tux was perfect when we picked it up, and that is saying something considering the groom's father, brother, & best man had their measurements faxed in from out of state. All of our party are fairly standard in size, no one really tall or really short or built like a mack truck, so I suppose that made it easier. The one thing they didn't have was extra long ties. That just means you have to keep your vest on if you have a belly that requires extra long ties (Dad, I'm looking at you!). Everyone looked very nice. Rented from Formally Modern for my wedding. My first visit went perfectly. I was measured and the staff was friendly and eager to answer any questions. When three of us went to pick up the tuxes, however... No one's tuxedo fit. This, despite having used their online form to mail in our measurements. One guy's shirt had a stain. My shirt didn't have all its buttons. One guy sent in his measurement as a 33" waist and the pants they handed him were 31". Of course, not everything is going to fit perfectly, but these seem like some major screw-ups. The day before the wedding, three other men showed up. Two people actually fit. But one guy slipped on his coat and it looked like he was wearing a child's suit. So despite being measured by professionals, 4/6 tuxedos did not fit. Ultimately, we were able to get tuxedos that fit everyone. One groomsman had to take a taxi to Formally Modern the morning of our wedding to get everything switched out. When I returned the tuxedos, the man at the shop kinda shrugged and blamed everyone else for getting bad measurements. I find it hard to believe that anyone could measure THAT FAR OFF from reality, but whatever. It's easier than taking responsibility, I suppose. The tuxes were ultimately fine, but I strongly recommend making sure you have ample time to try everything on well before your event. Chances are, you'll get at least something that doesn't fit. Thrilled to review this local business and give them five stars as they made the tuxedo rental process so easy and hassle-free, and the guys working there really know what they're doing and gave some really helpful tips and recommendations to ensure I made the right choice. Ask as many questions as you want and you'll get thorough answers, pros and cons about various choices and if something doesn't fit right or look right, the guys there will tell you and suggest something better. Can't speak highly enough of my experience there -- sadly I did not get the names of the two guys who helped me. One thing to note: while all the staff were friendly, there was a younger woman working when I picked up the tux and I asked her about the fit. I wasn't too convinced with the answer so I asked her male colleague - and he came to the rescue and explained a few things and also offered some suggestions which I preferred to the basic answer I got from his female colleague. I've used formally modern about 3 times in the last 4 years and overall, they have some stellar service. I used them for my best friend's wedding, my engagement photos, and my wedding. First off, Amina is spectacular. She is easily the most experienced sales person there and she is so helpful that it is almost unbelievable. She sent us a follow up card, follow up phone calls; she just makes getting you serviced good her first priority. This review mostly applies to our most recent partnership which was for my wedding on 6/12/16. My groomsmen and I got the morning jacket. They wore black tuxedo trousers and I wore the grey pinstripe trousers. I wore a silver bow tie and they were black bow ties. These tuxedos were STYLISH! Amina was very good at following up on making sure the guys had their measurements and she helps with getting everything tried on. We even had 2 guys coming from out of town who had to have their measurements sent over and their tuxedos still fit perfectly. She is a GEM! Alex, the manager is also very friendly and helpful. The reason I can't give this review 5 stars is unfortunate. 4 out of 7 guys had the top button on their tux fall off RIGHT before the wedding! Including me, the Groom! It was just lucky that we had someone available with safety pins to doctor the button back on temporarily but otherwise, we would have had to wear our jackets open the whole night and it would of looked tacky. So the buttons must not have been sewn on properly or just poorly designed. That was a bit of an inconvenience. Other than that, the place is fantastic. The custom tuxedos turned out absolutely perfect. The rentals for the groomsmen were the best rentals I have ever seen at a wedding. The groomsmen submitted their measurement a few months before wedding and then tried them on in person the day before the wedding. Donnie and team made last minute alterations to jackets and pants to ensure a perfect fit for all shapes and sizes. I know there are a lot of guys who find shopping for wedding attire agonizing- my fiance is not one of them :). He was interested in buying a tux for our wedding next year, and just happened to be browsing in the store and saw one that he had been eyeing online on sale. Since they were very busy at the time, Donnie put it on hold for him until he could come back the following week. When we we went back last night, Donnie was extremely helpful. He knows exactly how a good tux should fit, and is a great salesperson without being pushy or overbearing. He seems like someone who is very aware of the latest fashion trends and whose judgment you trust. I know we will be sending all of our groomsmen here to get their tuxes for our wedding. The minute I walked in, they sized me up quicker than Vesper Lynd visually sized up James Bond in Casino Royale. They then asked me several questions to gauge the type of tux that I was looking for: -Did I want a slim fit or traditional fit? -Necktie or bowtie? -Vest or cummerbund? -Shaken or stirred? (okay... I promise to stop with the Bond references) I was in the store by 6pm, out by 6:20, and they had it ready for me the very next day to pick up. The second and third times were very similar. I rented a suit and another tuxedo. Both times, they quickly measured me, asked me about all of my preferences, and I was out the door in no time. ::::::::::::::::WHAT STOOD OUT:::::::::::::::: The customer service - hands down. Each and every time, the customer service has been incredible. If you come in with an idea of what you want, they help you find it. If you have no idea what you're looking for, they help find the best attire that suits your style. Never once did they pressure me into getting something I didn't want. They'll give you their best recommendations based on years of expertise, but they won't push you into renting/buying based on it. Nor will they rush you into making a decision. Man, we had a SHARP looking group of men at our wedding thanks to Formally Modern - Donnie was a HUGE help and really knows his stuff! My husband bought a tuxedo from them and Donnie was able to help my hubby learn the difference between various tuxedo styles. We also received a very nice discount as the owner of the Orland Park location is an acquaintance of mine...so that was really nice! The quality here is MUCH higher than that of Men's Warehouse - you can see it in the ties and the vests as well as the quality of the tuxes. The wool on their coats are brushed much nicer and the vests and ties are handmade quality. All of our groomsmen were from out of town so submitting measurements was not a problem at all. In our visit, he was the one who suggested my husband try on the tuxes he was interested in to see how he would like it and to see if the colors matched what we envisioned. This great attitude was consistent in all of our interactions throughout the year. I found that the tuxedos they offered for rent, though a somewhat limited selection, were of better quality and better condition than those I found elsewhere. These guys are awesome. My wife was an admitted 'bridezilla' during our wedding and delegated the mens clothing to me. I made the error of asking my guys to just wear black suits, and I was planning on wearing my own tux. When this was discovered it turned out to be not ok and off we went. We all got simple, classic tuxes. We paired them up with high quality shirts and nice ties (those were not rented) which really made the look good. Prices were reasonable, and the fit on my tux was great. Anyway, not hard to rent some tuxes out but they had to deal with three or four screaming fiance fits. We had a great experience with Formally Modern on Clybourne for the tuxedos for our wedding. We worked with Stephanie and her service was outstanding. My husband and his brothers are very built, so tuxes tend to fit them wrong and make them look boxy. Stephanie recommended a tux that was cut a little larger in the sleeves, so the guys were able to order smaller sized jackets and still be able to move well. They looked sharp and were really comfortable. 3 of our groomsmen were from out of town. They emailed or called in their measurements. One the guys flew in from California and didn't arrive until the morning of the wedding. His pants were a little tight in the hip, but Stephanie was able to find a different size that fit better and he walked out with a perfectly fitting tux feeling great. After visiting Men's Warehouse (TUX) and Black Tie - we stumbled across Formally Modern. I am SOOOO glad we did. We walked in and talked to Donnie and he was extremely helpful! Showed us our options and went through the special they had for weddings. We need 7 tuxes and we get 2 free for that. So.. at $119 for the tux and $40 for all the accessories it's $159 total for the package. That's AWESOME for the high end tux they had. At MW it was $169 for a sub-standard tux as a rental, plus only one free tux. I'm so glad we stopped in! Also, the quality is MUCH better than Black Tie, so definately check it out! read more

Here's what happened. I needed a tie for my tux. So I walked into Men's Wearhouse five doors down, and it was a sh*tstorm. Next, I walked into Formally Modern Tuxedo, and it blew my mind. I explained exactly what I wanted. "I have a tux from 5 years ago, silver vest, is that cool?" The gent behind the desk smiled and walked me through what it is to look good in a tuxedo in 2010. Turns out, my vest is no longer cool. He explained that all I really needed was a simple tie, which he then sold to me for...$29. Are you kidding me? Ben frickin Sherman? Classy, hipster stuff. FMT carries an exhaustive selection of items for rental and purchase including tuxedos, ties, vest, cummerbunds, suspenders, cuffs, shoes, and studs. Although, I settled on a traditional concept, FMT had several black tie style, pattern, and texture options on display. FMT even has some nice casual clothing items as well. As far as customer service, Stephanie, Thomas, and Donnie were the best and so patient. My concept of what I was going to wear changed three times as I strategically made subtle probing inquiries to my intended bride regarding the details of the clandestine "Cinderella" gown. All three were well educated in the etiquette of formalwear while also being creative enough to assist me in establishing a distinguished-personality tailored ensemble appropriate for the day when one is photographed while standing next to the most beautiful woman in the world. No pressure there, right? I am a thirty-something groom and a meticulous dresser. I shopped around at all the traditional places; I will just say I was underwhelmed and leave it at that!
