We usually rent from MW but last year it cost us around $300 to RENT. Someone in my son's prom party said they were going here for a good deal on suits for the guys so we decided to just check it out. We drove over an hour. The parking lot and overflow were full and when we walked in it was very overwhelming with us being used to being helped right away and having an assigned person to help. Laci (I believe ) helped us at the beginning as we looked lost and overwhelmed then Ally took over and we had her full and undivided attention. Thankfully. She was very knowledgeable in fitting my son with his correct size, gave her opinion on best color to match his dates dress etc she answered all the questions we had and we felt at ease being there and having her help us. The suit side was tame compared to the dress side. We ended up buying a whole suit, vest, white shirt, 2 ties (we couldn't decide on the color) and 2 pocket chiefs. All for $275 which is less than what we paid to rent at MW. And my son will have this suit until he outgrows it. Perfect for upcoming clubs and interviews his senior year next year. This weekend saw my second visit to Formalwear Outlet. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Isn't it about time you own a tux? For the price of rental, you can own a tux. Then you can do what I just did, go buy a few different color vest/tie (or even more economically, cummerbund and tie) combinations. Makes the tux look different when you swap out colors. When I asked for adjustments (flat instead of pleated pants for a tuxedo) I was immediately informed of the impact on the price and provided the requested style. My daughters & I drove from Fort Bragg (60 some miles one way) to check out what they have in stock. It's a big place...think gown overload! Think of a color they have it, think of a style they have it, think they won't have your size they have it. My girls were overwhelmed with the options so we had a quick chat to narrow down a color to make it easier. Ashley was the Rep who helped us out, she is super nice and so calm. She took the time to listen to all the restrictions the dresses have to have for the event. She was able to help the girls find the perfect dress, even though my youngest (13 y/o) had given up! Once the girls found their dresses Ashley told us we would get a 10% off coupon to buy jewelry the same day. My eldest decided to take advantage of that; she found a really pretty necklace to match her dress. We walked out with two beautiful gowns and a necklace for just under $300! Awesome! We had to take the gowns to get altered because they were way too long for my daughters. When we finally made it home my daughter took the necklace out of the bag and two "stones" fell off; one of the stones is the middle one which is the center of it! Unfortunately for me I don't have time to drive back to ask for an exchange since the event is tomorrow nor am I willing to spend half a tank of gas for a necklace. We will definitely be back for gowns, we'll just skip the jewelry counter to avoid this in the future. read more

There is a very large selection of prom dresses--that is, if you're a size 6 or lower. As you go up in size, the selection gets thinner and thinner. I miraculously found a dress in my size that I LOVED. A month later, I took it out of the bag to see what alterations needed to be done, and the dress was falling apart. The rhinestones were falling off, and the zipper was completely broken. I called to ask if I could return or exchange it, and they told me that they will only do exchanges within 10 days of purchase. So now I am stuck with a damaged dress, with the tags still on it, that they refuse to exchange. I will not be shopping here ever again; I will be finding my new prom dress somewhere where I won't be wasting my money. read more

Rental tuxes vary widely in quality and sizing, so you have to pay close attention to the condition of each piece. Also the industrial fabrics aren't as soft as you might like. New pieces (e.g. shirt, cumberbund) are available for an up charge so the full package price may go higher if you want some changes. Overall good experience with a very patient and pleasant clerk (I tried about 7 tuxes before finding a decent option). You just need to know the limitations if a place like thus. The dresses are poorly made. My daughter found a dress she loved and we bought it. When we got home it ended having a huge rip in the tule that we didn't see. You can only return and exchange. Can't get a refund. I personally don't like that. Because I was stuck having to get another dress that we didn't really care for but everything else was poorly made. We just bought two prom dresses here today. The store is like a big warehouse and has a HUGE selection of prom/pageant gowns, all between $100 and $200, mostly less than $150. No, they are not super high-end gowns, but that's not what the average high school or college student needs in a dress they'll wear one night. The dresses are brand-new and beautiful, but of course, they're being tried on by dozens of girls, so just inspect the dress before you buy it to make sure it's still perfect. What surprised me most about the store, though, was the awesome service. We were there on a VERY busy evening, and yet, there was always someone to assist us, and they did it with a smile! Barbara, in particular, was helpful with advice about whether certain styles of dresses could be successfully altered to fit. Upfront, I made a mistake. I checked the website and noted the "extended hours" and didn't notice that they weren't "extended" on Saturdays. My daughters and I and a friend drove just about 1.5 hours and arrived at about 5:15 on Saturday. Thinking we were rushed for time to get some dresses tried on and bought and get out before closing at what I thought was 7pm the 4 of us went around and picked up the appropriate dresses so the girls could have one large fitting room session and we'd be done and out of there. My mistake was that the store was closing at 5:30. I found this out when the incredibly rude woman near the dressing room told me that the dressing rooms were closed, she said they were "trying to empty them out" because "we close at 5:30" and she tapped her watch like I was too stupid to understand that it was now 5:35. True I made the mistake on timing but there was no indication the store was closing - it was packed full of people, no sales associate told us the time was nearing, nothing....just what was essentially "we don't need your business, so get out." I was in retail for many years and recall many times I waited on someone to make a decision after closing. I never took the items from them and invited them to leave. Rest assured, regardless of closing time, I won't go here again. I won't refer anyone. There is a way to treat people who are there to spend their money and keep you in business. I first thought my reaction was over the top and didn't even mention it to the others I was with. However, they all expressed the same reaction. Each of us had a different thing that stood out from "My staff is leaving" to the watch tapping but each of us felt we had been treated poorly. We wasted our time looking (15 minutes only - but we wouldn't have bothered) and we wasted a huge amount of "my staff" time because we pulled many dresses that they had to put back. A waste of their time indeed with nothing to show for it. There are tons of dresses in this establishment. I can't tell you if they fit or anything about their quality. I can tell you that any place I go and plan to spend several hundred dollars in less than an hour needs to be a place where customers are treated with a bit more respect. One of the folks in my group actually asked later on if I thought that the reason the person was so rude to us was because one of my daughters Asian. I don't know...my thought is that the issue is that customers are not valued there. Avoid it unless you enjoy being treated as "less than." I spent about 20 minutes total in that place.....long enough to feel unappreciated for certain. Oh, and that deal on their website about strollers not being allowed in dressing rooms and other areas turned out to not be true so take your kids, take your strollers, but for heavens sake don't expect people to be pleasant or to understand that customers are essential. Again, I got the closing time wrong so that's on me. The way it was handled was not good and left a terrible impression. All 4 of us felt that we were treated rudely. And the 4 of us don't agree on a lot of things. By the way, we went down the road a bit and found the perfect dress. Perfect. And customer service too! read more

BEWARE of Formalwear Outlet in Hillsborough! If you buy a dress here and the clerk makes a mistake you are stuck with the dress. My daughter bought a dress in January. The clerk put it back by accident. When we told her we intended to get that dress, the same clerk immediately went and grabbed the dress. We then went home, hung the dresses in the closet and now two days before prom did a final "try on" only to find the clerk brought back a size 4 rather than a size 6. All tags are on the dress, but Formalwear Outlet will not take it back under any circumstances. I JUST WANT AN EXCHANGE. This was certainly no deal since I must now go buy a new gown. Last year, I got my prom dress from here and the staff was super nice and super helpful and I had a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same this year when I went looking for a dress. Me and my friend went on a Thursday afternoon around 4:10 and were trying on dresses by 4:45 (they close at 5:30). The place was not busy at all. The whole time while we were trying on dresses, the two girls that were helping us were complaining about everything, I did not once hear a nice thing come out of their mouths. They were complaining how they were so ready to go home and how it was so hard to put 2 piece dresses back on the rack (as I am handing them 2 piece dresses). At one point while I was trying on dresses, the girls got very angry because another customer walked in, even though it was only 5:00 (30 minutes until they close). I felt very rushed the whole time I was trying on dresses. They were very rude and made me and my friend not ever want to come back. I did not buy a dress here this year. This place has beautiful and affordable dresses, but the staff made it a terrible experience. read more

This was our first experience here. Overall, it was good. I felt there was a wonderful selection in both styles and sizes. The staff was friendly overall. When we arrived, we added our name to a list for the dressing room. We then learned that the lower priced Prom dresses are minimally adorned, but very affordable. Because we were looking for a detailed gown, we looked at pageant dresses. These too are priced very competitive. There was a 10 minute wait between finding our "try on" selections and the dressing room becoming available. There is an assistant to help with fitting. This was nice. We found the perfect dress. The only real complaint that I have is the gown we selected had a small section of beading that was loose and sagging. Granted this dress is $200.00 cheaper than our purchase last year of $400.00, but at a $200.00 price point, we still expect the dress to be fully intact. I asked for a $10.00 discount to cover the cost of a seamstress. I was informed this is an "as is" purchase. However, they have a part-time seamstress who was not there on that Saturday. This was really not my fault that the seamstress was not present on that day or that there is a backlog. Because my daughter loved the dress and it was reasonably priced, we purchased the dress. It still really bugs me that the establishment would not choose to return the dress to a new and undamaged condition or extend a $10.00 discount for me to have a seamstress correct. It sounds like the business would have fixed the beadwork had the seamstress been present. I did not want to disappoint my daughter over $10.00. However, $10.00 is a small price for quality customer service. Again, overall this was a good experience. I would return, but with the knowledge that all items are "as is". Maybe there was a sign that I didn't see. That's possible. read more

I was skeptical going here, something about retired tuxedos had me nervous and also the fact it was an hour drive out. I must say if there's any special occasion in my near future where the tux I bought today doesn't work out, I will be shopping here. There is a huge selection of tuxedos and prom dresses. As a guy I didn't do much with the prom dresses but glance at them but they were gorgeous. On the other hand, the mens section was superb with thousands of different styles and colors for your tux. I saw one of the reviews on here talk about stained clothing and so naturally I inspected every article of clothing I picked up. I picked up over 30 items to look at the style of the different jackets, shirts, and vests and in close inspection I only found 1 item with a stain. The staff was great and helped me get fitted for my occasion and they were very helpful. I must say this place is amazing for the price. My tux costs $90 while non students cost $110 I believe. I felt like I was leaving the store with a new tux rather than a used one because the quality was so great! I would recommend to all of the yelp viewers. read more

My Wife and I both have bought pieces from this outlet. I know everyone does have their own opinion but from a guys stand point you will not be disappointed buying a tux here. My brother and i both just went there to get us a tux each to go on a cruise and to get a Chaps tux and all the works for $115.00 is a steal. I went and priced just to rent one like it and it was $145.00 for one night and i bought it for $115. That to me just makes sense. I did see where i couple of pieces had some stains on them but you just put them back and keep right on shopping. Far as a ladies dress my wife and sister-in-law both have bought many dresses from here. But do keep in mind their policy about returns. Check the dress out fully before you buy it. My wife got a beautiful dress for our cruise coming up and only paid 115.00 bucks a steal to me when she was at Dillards and the dresses their were 299.00. so for me that's easy math. For me i would not hesitate to refer any one to this place. The stuff was very helpful and really told us what we needed to know about the pieces.. A+ stuff. read more

To be fair, I have been here one other time and had no problems. Today, I did not feel valued as a customer and would rate my experience less than satisfactory. After spending 1 1/2 hours searching and trying on the right tux, I was told the jacket was not part of the "package" deal and it was a specialty item. That is fine but it was not marked nor did any one of the associates involved with us tell me it was a "specialty item". When I expressed my frustration that I had spent 2 hours there I was rudely told I had only been there 1 1/2 hours not 2. Very unprofessional and inconsiderate of the time and effort I had expended at their business regardless if it was 1 1/2 or 2 hours. Mistakes certainly happen I understand but no attempt to right this situation was made, just tough luck! I will not return to the formal wear outlet and will gladly drive out of my way to visit a business that actually values their customers. read more
