TINY PORTIONS, BASIC FOOD - OVERPRICED..RUDE OWNERS - A COMPLETE INSULT - DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY. I went to Formosa today with my husband and left absolutely FUMING. I've never felt so blatantly disrespected at a restaurant. They tried to have me pay $16.95 for what looked like a kid's sample plate-- it was that bad. The owner then slaps (I'm SERIOUS) the plate back on my table yelling, "OKAY, You can pay $14.00"..what the heck? You disrespect me and still want me to pay anything for this? You lost you mind. I was served maybe ONE OUNCE of chicken breast. Not a full meal -- not even close. Just a few sad slivers of onion and about half a cup of rice. For nearly $17. This wasn't some gourmet presentation either -- it looked like something thrown together at a soup kitchen. It was downright insulting. When I brought it up, calmly and respectfully, the owner snapped at me, saying, "DID YOU EVEN LOOK AT THE MENU?" Your menu should have said, food that looks like overpriced and basic. Excuse me? I didn't raise my voice, I didn't curse -- and that's the response I get? After I said I wasn't going to pay $16 for three bites of food, they started gossiping about me to other customers, giving me nasty looks, and rambling about being "in business for 20 years" as if that justifies their attitude and garbage portions. I'm sorry, but being in business for 20 years doesn't give you a license to treat people like trash or serve meals that wouldn't satisfy a toddler. Their arrogance is unbelievable. DO NOT EAT HERE. You'll walk away feeling ripped off, disrespected, and hungry. The owners clearly don't care about their customers anymore -- if they ever did. I paid cash for our lumpia and our sweet teas and left right after our interaction. I won't walk out on a bill but I wont ever be taken advantage of. These people were effing nasty. And if they are reading this -- yes, I'm talking to YOU TWO the owners -- maybe take a long, hard look in the mirror. Your behavior is disgraceful, and your food is embarrassing. Either drastically change the way you treat your paying customers, or do us all a favor and RETIRE - your washed up. read more

The portions are extremely small like child meal portion size I spent $20 on a lunch special and the only drink that comes included is an iced tea. I don't drink tea so I asked if I could exchange it for something else which they replied with "there will be a charge." Why are you forcing me to drink tea? There was not a single person in the restaurant at lunch, the older gentlemen who I assume is one of the owners was sitting at one of the tables with his laptop watching tennis. When I walked in he just said can I help you? He didn't offer a menu or anything. There isn't a menu posted anywhere so I had to ask for one and he hands me this piece of paper in a folder. Absolutely ridiculous do not eat here. I left hungry and furious with $20 less in my pocket. Had to go buy lunch somewhere else. Went to Ocean Island across the street! Let me start by saying I love Chinese food. I scanned this area for highly rated, frequently reviewed restaurants and found Formosa. I was there for a late lunch and there were only 3 people in the place. Figuring that many Chinese restaurants offer a nice for lunch portions, I ordered Szechuan chicken and substituted fried rice for white rice. I got the small order of egg rolls and had a water. What I got was what I consider a lunch portion sized plate which was not particularly flavorful. The egg rolls were very good and enjoyable. The price before tip was $28 for lunch!!!! Absolutely overpriced as stated in someone else's review, lumpia with no filling , lechon kawali with no taste and the pansit so sweet my wife had to toss it , no personality from the staff. The person that recommended this place obviously has never had decent real filipino cooking. The pork adobo wasn't bad. $72 plus tip for lunch and most wasn't edible. Maybe they've been doing it too long because it reflects on the food and atmosphere . Seek Filipino food elsewhere my friends. Or marry a Filipina like I did. read more

This place is our go to for our Oriental Cuisine fix. The same great taste and good service. Very friendly staff, the wife there actually pulled up a chair and kept us company, while we ate our dinner. We solved all the world's problems talking politics! Would recommend to anyone. So, my sister & I decided to get some Asian food, after craving for so long & it was near our stop to the grocery store so we walked in Formosa to see pricing originally! We were also excited due to the great reviews, so after contemplating, we walked in. No issues at first, the gentleman acknowledged us and handed a menu once asked. Now, my sister & I were in there for maybe 10 minutes & finally decided on what to order (Over priced, I will say) We wanted to see if we could swap an entree for their combo deal, so we asked! Politely, might I add, and omg!!! The red lipped lady at the counter was so terribly rude!! She rolled her eyes and said with a snouted mouth "No we don't substitute whats on the menu is whats on the menu, what we have there is what its gonna be, we're not changing that" VERY close to that. Very snotty, very nasty, extremely unacceptable behavior. Poor example of customer service. She repeated this twice, my sister & I did nothing but look at each other, hand back the menus & say never mind, thank you. Walked out in peace. I made a long drive to get here because I was craving kare kare and my husband wanted lechon kawali. Many local Filipinos I know recommend this restaurant as having the best filipino food in the Charleston area.... and I can vouch for that! In addition to lechon kawali and kare kare, we also had lumpia, chicken adobo and pancit. All were delicious! Service was excellent and our host was very very friendly. Over priced and extremely rude! My family has been going to the oriental cuisine for 40+years since i was a kid! we were sad when they closed but excited to find their relative owns this restaurant and food is similar. we have been twice now and its always hot and cramped. But food was still pretty good. Sadly the service is not. My 72 year old mom and her friend went today for lunch and though the sign on door says they don't close until 7pm they were abruptly asked to leave by the owner stating they had stayed too long. There weren't other customers and plenty of empty tables. Sadly my family won't be back. My dad passed away about a year and half ago and to see my mom treated like that is unfortunate. read more

I feel compelled to warn potential customers that my decide to try out Formosa Chinese Restaurant located on 650 College Park Road. I have frequented this restaurant many times thru the years. I have not been there for about 7 years and decided I wanted some Filipino food. I ordered 2 orders of the combination dinner and 1 order of Lumpia. The combination dinner is supposed to come with 1 entree, 2 lumpia, bacon fried rice, and ice tea. This was a take out order. Total cost was $50.00. I was shocked to say the least. I reluctantly paid for the order deciding I will never come back. When I got the order home, I noticed that they used plain rice, not bacon fried rice. The portion size was laughable at best. The lumpia included with the dinner were old and chewy. The extra order of lumpia were fresh and cooked properly. They also did not give me my ice teas. I couldn't believe I just paid $50.00 for this sad excuse for a meal. Again, you might want to think twice before you decide to go to the restaurant. read more

Three of us went for an early dinner on Saturday. Very small dining room, only eight tables, but take-out business is brisk. We shared an order of lumpia. I thought they needed a bit more seasoning, but the wrappers were crisp and the dipping sauce was good. I would order them again. I got the Sinigang and was disappointed. The pork was short ribs, I believe, and that requires more work than I care for in removing all the bones, fat, and other inedible bits. I was told it was a good soup-as-meal that had tamarind in it. Honestly, I couldn't taste a bit of tamarind. The pork had an "off" odor to it, though it tasted okay for boiled meat. It had radishes, cabbage, green beans, and tomatoes. I'm glad there was plenty of rice. I would not order it again. My friends ordered two entrees that were great. The Pork Adobo was yummy! Rich flavor with a nice gravy. This dish has onions. I give it an A and would order it again. The third entree was the Chicken with Black Bean Sauce. It was also great! A bit on the sweet side, but I liked that. If you want authentic Filipino food, this is the place to go! The hubby and I have ordered everything from the Kaldereta to the Lechon, to the Kare Kare and the Pancit and it has all been fantastic. This restaurant is owned by a Filipino family that remembers you when you order often! What a lovely surprise this place was! Based on Yelp ratings, I recently gave Formosa a try and was pleasantly surprised. Although the interior is a bit dated, everything seemed very clean and the staff was extremely friendly. Every dish had its on unique flavor and OH BOY what a flavor it was. I usually use wonton soup as a baseline for all Chinese cuisine and Formosa did not disappoint. The wontons were delicate and delicious! My friend and I also tried the General Tso's Chicken which was great. BTW- Have you ever had Bacon fried rice...I'm not sure where that's been all my life but I am now a convert. It tasted like someone poured franks hot sauce in it and instead of broccoli there were stringy onions. The pork lo mein noodles were horrible and tasted strange. The crab Rangoon wasn't bad, but 29 dollars total for the worst Chinese I've ever had in my entire life! I could have paid that and had a decent meal elsewhere. My mistake.
