I usually order a small order of pork fried rice and teriyaki chicken on a stick. I've tried the chicken wings, chicken fried rice, sesame chicken and general tso's chicken. Sometimes service is not always the best. And they have added Bubble/Boba teas a few months ago. Haven't tried it yet. Not a big fan. We ordered here last week and the food was really good. We ordered the chicken teriyaki (6 sticks) and shrimp fried rice. The teriyaki was so good and they gave you a lot of rice too. My husband doesn't like onions in his fried rice so I asked for no onions. He didn't get a lot of shrimp, which a bummer. But he still enjoyed his food. My son got the sweet and sour chicken dinner and it was also very good. The chicken itself was very meaty and not hard like some places. And the pieces were big too. I ordered for delivery and it was reasonably quick. I got the general Tao's chicken, the pork fried rice, a pork egg roll, a shrimp egg roll and fried scallops. Everything was piping hot when it arrived, the scallops were perfectly cooked and crispy on the outside breading. The general tso's chicken was good. The orange chicken has a texture of rubber. It went straight to trash. The egg roll is undercooked. The rib tips were super hard! The rice was heavily seasoned with soy sauce. Also, they stapled the styrofoam to prevent the food from spilling. A piece of staple ended up on top of the rice. Even if the taste is okay, the texture of the meat tells me it's old or overcooked so i had to throw it. Not edible. Waste of my money. read more

I was craving Crab Rangoon for DAYS and after another delivery place failed me the day before, I gave this place a try last night. The Rangoon is pinched-up wonton-style, so there is a lot of hard fried pastry at the top, but I just started eating at the bottom, where the good stuff is, and didn't eat the tops, like a strawberry. They satisfied my need and cured my grumps. The steamed dumplings are good and come with a ton of dipping sauce, not a tiny cup like elsewhere. The sauce has a distinct anise or fennel note, but is very tasty and not overly salty. The fried crab claws were krab, but adorably presented on little skewers with yummy tartar sauce. The chicken wings are fabulous, meaty not fatty, perfectly cooked and flavorful. We got Buffalo and Lemon Pepper and the Buffalo were mildly spicy, with a building heat. The Lemon Pepper were not noticably either, but were tasty wings. The dinner specials are HUGE servings and we didn't even get to them last night, so it's General Tso's chicken for breakfast! My husband and I have been hesitant to order Chinese food from new places as the last place we ordered from botched the General Tso's chicken. We ordered through door dash so we did not experience the restaurant itself. However, my husband ordered the general tso's chicken and it was spot on. He had no complaints. It wasn't too chewy and the rice was flavorful. I ordered the peppered steak with onions. The sauce was amazing and the steak was cooked perfectly. Again, it wasn't too chewy. We also ordered the spring rolls and crab rangoons. Both were great and cook properly. The crab rangoons, were a wonton style (I'm used to Panda Express type of rangoons usually). But these were good, crunchy with a warm soft center. The sauce to dip them in was the perfect combination. If you're looking for a decent Chinese food place, this could be a great option if you don't want to break the bank! read more

Was a regular customer here before they closed down for COVID. Used to be great food, and reasonable. Now it is disappointing and overpriced. Quality is definitely not what it used to be. Their General Tsao Chicken was the biggest disappointment. Small, tough pieces of chicken, and the sauce was a different recipe from what it used to be. Soggy instead of crispy. Yuk. I have had the good fortune of being incredibly spoiled by a childhood in California and living over a decade in Hawaii and Guam before coming here. But.... I do my best to keep my snobbery in check and honestly do crave, every now and then, the "red and sticky" style American takeout Chinese. Hubby and I were looking to try a different than our usual take out spot and this restaurant popped up on the delivery sites with impressively high review numbers! We rolled the dice and ordered some takeout standards - fried wontons, chinese chicken wings, general tso's, lo mein, pork fried rice. After being promised by the website it would take 50 min and then waiting over an hour and a half (which is totally forgiveable on. Sunday night, I'm sure everyone is busy!!!), the food finally arrived. Their website directs to Postmates for delivery so I'm not considering the delivery delay in the review. But after being notified that my ordered was being picked up twice by two different drivers, I was already a little annoyed and hungry going into this. When the food arrived, I was hungry and still trying to stay optimistic. I opened the first box which was crispy fried wontons. They were very crispy but I don't know what they seasoned with - maybe WAAAAAAAY too much 5 spice???? - but they were terrible. The order, unfortunately, went in the trash as neither my husband nor myself were able to finish even a single wonton. We opened the general tso's and it was very deep dark brown and, unfortunately, not in the most appetizing way. Though the chicken pieces seemed to be fried well, they were drowning in a poorly seasoned, sticky, weirdly sweet sauce. It tasted as if someone tried to make an Asian inspired barbeque sauce and failed to make an Asian sauce or a bbq sauce. I did find one broccoli floret but it was so saturated in the sauce, I didn't try to eat it. Chinese chicken wings are usually very specifically battered, seasoned, and fried. Also, they are typically served whole - NOT split into flats and drums. But I guess the fact they were simply advertised as "chicken wings" not "Chinese chicken wings" should have been a clue that these would just be pieces of chicken thrown in the fryer. Chinese chicken wings typically need no sauce to enjoy them but these were screaming for a sauce or dry rub. As if they were buffalo wings that someone forgot to toss before serving. They were perfectly edible, and fried correctly, but flavorwise it was nowhere near my expectations. The lo mein was decent compared to the rest of the meal and overall the portion sizes are HUGE! There may be other dishes they do better so I'm not trying to write them off completely. However, I think it will be a while before hubby and I roll the dice on this place again. So, I'm giving them two stars because despite the incredible disappointment experienced by this food, all dishes were accounted for. read more

We ordered egg drop soup (FIRE), sweet & sour chicken (AMAZING), shrimp fried rice (best I've ever had) and spring rolls which were also 10/10. Not to mention we placed our order at 9:10 and they closed at 930, we made it right at 930 and the lady who worked there was still SUPER nice and had great customer service despite the fact we arrived at closing. I have been going to thois Chinese express for decades and through different ownerships. The original owner was fantastic. The second was poor and did not last long at all. But the most recent owners I have known for 10 years now and they are amazing. Even through COVID and the stupid face diaper debacle the food has been excellent. Comparing them to all the other Chinese food joints and I have tried many (because I love Chinese food) 431 St James is still the best. The next best is over in West Ashley next to a Toyota Dealership. Third best is a tiny place on Remount Road. So this is 5 STAR review and I have always been satisfied with whatever I ordered. Last night we had food from here for the second time. First time, back in November 2019, the food was good (probably would have rated 4 stars) but last night we just threw it in the trash. The chicken. In both the cashew nut chicken and lung pao chicken was plain nasty. It was soft and mushy like fat...not one piece, but all of it in each dish. We couldn't eat it. With the main enteee a waste, the rest wasn't worth eating. The egg roll tasted so-so and the roast pork fried rice...had better but still so-so. Third visit on a Saturday evening, Called in an order for A13 Teriyaki Wings (10 pcs) and pork fried rice, A14 Honey Wings (10 pcs) and pork fried rice, and a small Beef with peppers/onions. All that food for a little over $25! Told order would be ready in 10 minutes, I live about that driving distance so it's perfect. We did the "you fly, I buy" night so my fiancee went to grab the grub. She's back shortly and the house begins to fill with the smell of chinese take out. The results... Teriyaki Wings awesome, Honey Wings awesome, Beef/peppers/onions awesome! And the portion size of the wings/fried rice...easily two meals. I finished six wings, saved four for lunch the next day and split my friend rice into two separate meals. And plenty of Beef with peppers and onions left over too. Orange Chicken was burned and un eatable. Curry Chicken had a thick jelly like coating with no sauce. Spices were so bland that all it was was chewy blobs. Tasted like day old food (just being kind). Had not ever been to Chinese Express according to our GPS, we were only a few minutes away plus our sister lives off Saint James so it seemed like a good fit. WRONG! We were able to call-in an order while sitting in our car outside the restaurant. The menus were easily available on a table outside the restaurant's entrance. We chose from the SPECIAL COMBO PLATES section. #13: Chicken Sweet & Sour; #13 Pork Sweet & Sour; and #6 Boneless Spare Ribs. Each dish came with pork fried rice and an egg roll. It was all ready for take-out in under 15 minutes which was impressive. 20 minutes later, we were unpacking everything at our sister's house only to discover we had no idea what we were looking at! It certainly didn't appear to be the two Sweet & Sour dishes we ordered! Each of the two boxes were loaded with some kind of tasteless fried and now, very soggy pastry wrapped around a minuscule piece of either pork or chicken ---- hard to say as they both appeared to be the same. A plastic container of sweet red liquid stuff was included --- I gather for dipping? While there was a generous serving of pork fried rice in each combo, it was also tasteless. The 3rd dish ordered was the boneless spare ribs which were cut into lots of little rubbery/chewy and totally inedible pieces. The only thing we could eat were the egg rolls despite the fact that they, too, were wrapped in a soggy tasteless dough but at this point, we were hungry and decided that the egg rolls were the least distasteful of the bunch. Rather than wait on delivery, my neighbor placed a huge $80 order online and I went to pick it up. We live about 10 minutes away and they were bagging up the order when I walked in.
