I don't fancy sleeping on the floor, so we stayed in the Stage House. The cabin was very well stocked with kitchen wares and fire wood, so all you need to bring is food! We loved to go into the woods and forage for the local coastal mushrooms (think King Boletes and chanterelles). The stars are also incredibly beautiful and visible at night. Plus it's dog friendly! Our stay was my platonic ideal of glamping for sure.

On Sunday we decided to take the Mendocino Wine Tour that was offered by the Inn. Jim Davis was our guide for the tour, which lasted from 10 AM to around 5 PM. The tour was nothing short of excellent. Jim was a gracious host and guide from the first moment we shook hands. He has a natural warmth and pleasant nature, and took his time to get to know us as we began the tour. Jim took us to about six wineries and an art gallery on our trip - the art gallery being a spur-of-the-moment amendment since the art festival was going on - as well as a stop in the redwood forest. At each stop Jim provided knowledgeable insight and history into each location, as well as the recent past of the winery (i.e. how the grapes did in the past season, etc). He is also quite well versed in local botany, pointing out various plants and their interesting uses as well as picking and sampling a few of the more pleasant-smelling ones (bay leaves, lavender, etc). It was a wonderfully personal way to get to know Mendocino and Anderson Valley... Tiffany and I feel so much closer to the area as a result. Jim was also graciously attentive, taking our wine as we purchased it and securing it in the vehicle. He had lunch ready for us at our favorite winery (Sharfenberger) and we talked about various things... it was very pleasant and relaxing. And I won't forget to mention the generous discount that the tour offered on wine purchase, and waived fees on tasting. Tiffany and I were a bit anxious at the start of the trip when we realized we were going to be only ones, but thanks to Jim's great attitude and insightful experience we can honestly say we had a great time and the adventure was absolutely the highlight of the trip (with the MacCallum hot tubs a close second). We will definitely look Jim up in the future for more great travel advice and guidance, and heartily recommend this trip in particular and Jim's service in general to anyone interested in having a great and casual time in the Mendocino/Anderson Valley area. So my school had to opportunity to go to a debate tournament in Orlando. Everything was perfect…read morewith it except for one major exception....the bus from this company! It first started out with the trip being delayed 4 hours...4 hours! That is totally unacceptable for any company!! What happened though was that the bus was missing a part so we said "ok fine." Hours passed when we called back the driver was at Miami International Airport waiting for us.....we told him we were at the school located in Ft. Lauderdale!!! That was unacceptable and also the bus that we took up to Orlando was no joke about to fall apart! Also, many kids said that it smelled like During the trip, we had other problems with the company deciding to recall the bus driver and the bus. This ended us with no bus to get to and from the tournament. Finally though, the company gave us a bus and a driver from the Orlando depot after talking with them after a couple of hours. Thanks for the "amazing" customer services. The best part is that on the way home, the bus air-conditioning unit was broken. The best thing of all is that the company did not want to exchange the buses so we had to deal with no air for 3 hours....TOTAL FUN!!!! I urge you all to not go to this company at all. Additionally, look at their Better Business Bureau rating which is a "D-." If you don't believe me, look it up on BBB.org

She was an excellent driver (and it's a narly road) and super sweet, knowledgeable and personable. The 2hr drive flew by because of her and she gave us the perfect start to our adventure. Our experience using Mendocino Insider Tours for our wedding transportation was unfortunately…read morecompletely substandard. We had emphasized to our guests to be on time for their shuttle pick ups using the schedule provided to us by the company. One of the shuttles was EXTREMELY late for the pickups (between 30 and 45 minutes for some of them). They told the guests that the schedule didn't make sense to them and so they made their own schedule up. This led to a ton of confusion on the wedding day. Some of the guests had actually gotten into their cars to drive themselves because they didn't think anyone was coming by the time the shuttle showed up. One of our guests wanted to go home a little after 11 PM. A different (female) shuttle driver told him they only wanted to go back to his Airbnb one more time so our guest would have to wait until the rest of his party was ready to leave. He ended up waiting two hours later than he wanted. This is absolutely not what we had agreed. In our calls we had discussed multiple times that the shuttles would be running continuously from 10-2 AM to all destinations. All in all, the day was a complete mess from a transportation perspective and fell completely short of the services that we had agreed to and paid for. Before posting this review, I brought these events to the attention of the business owner who did not apologize for our experience and scapegoated his team.

Inside, there's a great mix of exhibits and local history, from a detailed scale model of Mendocino as it looked in 1890, to displays on early logging, native plants, and coastal wildlife. They also have helpful maps, brochures, and friendly staff who really know the area and share great insights. A perfect place to get oriented, learn the history, and appreciate the roots of Mendocino before heading out to explore the coast.

I love love loved the display that identified the local flora. There were banana slug magnets and stickers and plushies. They are only open 11 AM to 4 PM every day. I recommend stopping by to take a look inside. There is information about hikes and trails. The public restrooms are to the left of the Ford House. There are water fountains and a water bowl for pets.

A rest stop with red woods…read more Serving only northbound traffic on the 101, the Irvine Lodge Rest Area was named after an early auto camp and lodge owned by the Irvine's. It became a rest area in the 50's and contains a forested picnic and dog area with some old growth redwoods (hundreds of years old). It is located far enough back from the highway to have large trees in between block out the cars zipping by (though one can still hear the noise).
