Hilton Garden Inn Hays - Guest room

This is the best hotel to stay at in Hays, Kansas. We were so surprised that such a small town of…read moreabout 21k people had such a wonderful Hilton Hotel in the city. This place is better than many Hilton Branded Hotels in my own town, San Diego, CA and even LA. The decor is very pretty and well appointed and designed. The place is very well maintained. The restaurant makes a very good steak dinner. The personal pepperoni pizza was not good, and the side salad was not good. The Old Fashioned cocktail here made by Vanessa is DELICIOUS and made right! The rooms were very clean. We did find a bed bug in the bathroom the morning after our arrival, it was alive and we put it in a ziplock bag. I figured that after we searched the room for an hour for any more of them, that this one maybe came in from a crack in the bathroom wall. We let the front desk know. We had no bedbug bites, not many itchy moments, and did not see any others after the one was found. The bedding was clean, the duvet was switched out with a clean one, and the bed was comfortable. After a trip to Walmart next door, we sprayed our room and rental car down with Zevo, a natural insect/bug repellant. This seemed to work well. We also sprayed disinfectant all over the room to reinforce. Overall, the gym, laundry facilities, room, bathroom, restaurant, and conference spaces were top notch. The staff was friendly after the first couple of says seeing us as guests. I do recommend staying here if you are staying in Hay, KS. Took a star off for finding the bed bug. I posted a photo and video of it moving.

Leanna at the front desk is wonderful! She was so helpful. I was traveling with my elderly parents…read more& she spent extra time helping them with getting settled in their room. She also went out of her way to find some tape to tape down an oxygen cord so no one tripped. She went the extra mile & we appreciated her so much!

My husband and I booked this hotel for a very quick overnight stay on our cross-country road trip,…read moreopting for it over the others nearby because it was $150/night which seemed more promising than the $89/night at the Quality Inn, for instance. This is probably a three- to four-star place for most, but our experience was closer to a two because of the room we were assigned. We ended up in Room 100, which is handicap accessible (not necessary for either of us, but it was close to midnight, so we just went in and went to bed). The handicap shower makes a huge watery mess in the bathroom, partially understandable due to its design but made worse by its fire hose of a shower head. It took all of our extra towels to sop up the water from two very hurried showers. The bed itself was fairly comfortable, and the A/C works well, but don't walk barefoot on the carpet in this room unless you've done so in a sticky movie theater and enjoyed that sensation. The main problem with this particular room is the proximity to the side exit door and the stairwell door, which is where several people were slamming doors on their way in and out of the hotel around 5 a.m. I sleep with earplugs every night and still couldn't ignore the loud slams. Again, it's mostly the room itself and its location that made for a bit of a messy and restless night. Special thanks to the A-hole who made multiple trips up and down the stairs, stomping and slamming each time without regard for nearby rooms. The free breakfast was pretty good and the staff were friendly, but if you want to have a stay above two stars and don't require handicap accommodations, I'd suggest asking for a different room if you're handed the 100 key.

Not economical for what you get: Super 8 type motel offerings at twice the price with more modern styles furnishings. What am I looking for in a hotel? 1.) comfortable 2.) clean 3.) quiet for rest 4.) great customer service 5.) ease of check in and out. 6.) nice or convenient location. After visiting... This hotel only had location going for it, and on some level the location wasn't ideal as the windows and walls were so cheaply and thinly built that it sounded almost like I was sleeping on an airport tarmac. Between the I-70 traffic and howling raging wind, and hotel cooling system it was a very loud night. I would not ever stay here again. Room was not wonderfully clean or comfortable. The bed made my hip hurt and I had to shift to get comfortable, which is not a usual hotel bed experience for me. A bath towel had some odd spot on it. A long hair in the shower. Lots of stains and poorly kept areas in the room. The staff were pleasant but management and their policies are just miserly. This hotel is Not good for a late night visit because they don't really have a late checkout. Although he was polite the night attendant/front desk person didn't disclose they don't do actual late checkouts and honor IHGs standards of late check outs. They require you to wake up at 8+am and request it with the manager. (And then came to knock really loudly at the check out time as though that request approval didn't occur. And they knocked 2 hours before and opened the door both times, which I did not appreciate.) Normal hotels just approve it upon check in and IHG members are allowed to check out as late as 2pm, upon availability, but at normal hotels it's always available til at least 1pm, if you request the night before. (And normal hotels don't usually open the door in the morning while guests are still in the room.) Anyway, we arrived super late at night and called ahead and we would have for sure selected elsewhere if we had known that's how it would be, since we didn't get 8 hrs of sleep when we have to drive on our road trip. There's another IHG hotel in town that always are so helpful and much nicer and we get 4pm check out at Marriot, so it was frustrating that the gentleman at night didn't mention that while we called to ask about the room. The desk clerk in the day time was exceptionally kind and helpful so I added a star for that.
