After I expressed that I thought a Yamaha was a bit overpriced (compared to prices I've seen elsewhere), I wandered around the room to look at other pianos. When I tried a nearby Bechstein Dean said to me: "Why are you looking at Bechstein when you thought the Yamaha was too expensive?" That completely soured the experience for me. We had just been to another piano store where we were allowed to try all different pianos, even grand pianos, when we had said we were only looking to buy upright. In comparison we felt like we were not welcome at this store just because we didn't look rich or something. We left the store and bought an upright piano elsewhere that same day. When we went to his shop, he explained the origin of the pianos he had and what made each different. He graciously let us try everything from a Baldwin spinet to a beautiful late-1800s Steinway (which he knew was NOT in our price range!). We ultimately settled on a warm Charles Walter upright, made by a smaller American company we hadn't been familiar with but that - - besides making great pianos - - has business values we appreciate as a bonus.
