This place is pretty cool. I must have visited at some point in the past, as I come to Grand Haven once a summer, but if so I can't remember it. They have everything from beer to high-end snacks to candy. My boyfriend bought a pickle starter kit (has all of the spices in it for canning) for $5, and later in the day we returned because I wanted a cannoli chocolate bar that they had. I also got some chocolate-dipped Oreos on sale for $1, and some Junior Mints but they were more in like bonbon form. Staff was pleasant too and everyone was wearing masks, with hand sanitizer available at checkout. read more

Was in Grand Haven today and had to have some Fortino's redskin nuts. Always so delicious. WELL, not today, they were small, little taste, half stale and were cold. For $12 I expected better. Beware. My wife and I both commented on the difference between a few years ago and now. I hope they get the message and improve. read more

Stopped in Grand Haven strictly for the peanuts. They were fresh out of the toaster (they roast their own) Not only did it smell like peanut heaven but my husband has not stopped doting about how amazing they are!! Fortino's is a local and unique store in downtown Grand Haven. It is the oldest candy store there established in 1907. Since it's origination is has expanded over time to include grocery staples, specialty items, and wine. I tried some of their candy at the recommendation of our trolley guide. Chocolates were very good and they have a wide variety. Fortino's still has a nostalgic feel with its selection of candies. It's definitely worth a visit. My mom came in with her service dog for PTSD and they were verbally talking poorly about her after she told them. We ended up walking out because of how rude 2 out of the 3 employees were speaking about her. They didn't know I was with her and I heard everything said. I just moved to Grand Haven and will never step foot into this store again. POOR customer service. The gentleman had buzzed black hair. Great-grandpa Louis Fortino opened the store 101 years ago and since then it has been owned and operated next by his son Paul for many years, then his granddaughter Margie and her husband Ken since 1977. Ken and Margie will go out of their way to help you find something good to eat. They have tons of fancy and imported foods, candy, teas, coffees, deli stuff, dairy stuff, beer, wine, liquor, snacks, and a big cooler full of cold drinks. Plus their roasted peanuts are perhaps their signature item. Peanuts in the shell abound, and they carry cashews, almonds, pecans, macadamias, etc. too. I basically want to buy everything. I bought some sea salt and dark chocolate caramels this time. They were to die for. I could eat them all in one sitting. We love Fortino's and have for years. I love the old world market or bodega in downtown Grand Haven, similar to what one would see in Europe, NYC or Chicago. Fortino's specializes in fine chocolates, nuts, pastas, meats wine and fine hooch among other things. Recently, we've asked Fortino's to put together a number of gift baskets to send to friends who need a "pick-me-up." The quality exceeded our expectations and the baskets arrived quickly. Under new management. There are now many other specialty shops and candy options around the immediate area. So the novelty of the small candy shop is not as enticing. Plus the new owners own several similar shops (ice cream and candy), turning most of the options around town to be "more of the same" instead of unique. Given the more options, I don't have much of a reason to go into the shop anymore, but am delighted to see the other stores thriving. The scene in Grand haven is changing and the change of management in this old staple of downtown is just a sign that Fortinos is on the way out after 100 years. read more

Soon after arriving in Grand Haven, I was told there was only one place to go for a unique shopping experience. As I passed through the door into Fortino's, I was thrown back in time... Louis Fortino was born in 1878 in a tiny Italian village. A year later, the woman who would become his wife 18 years in the future was born in the same village. A year later, Louis and Chiara welcomed a son into their world and Louis began the fight to provide for his new family. Facing the closed doors of the Old World, he packed a trunk and sailed for Buenos Aires, Argentina to live the life of a gaucho. For three years, he sent his earnings back to Chiara in Italy, only returning once to see her and his new son. In 1903, with the help of a fellow Italian living in Michigan, he was allowed to enter the United States as an employed man. For the next several years, he worked at various manual labor jobs faithfully sending his money back home. One day he walked into a small fruit and cigar shop in Muskegon, Michigan, and struck up a conversation with the exhausted Italian owner. In 1907, for the price of $25.00, Fortino's was born. Four years later, it grew into a bigger store on Washington Street in Grand Haven, Michigan, and the cigars were replaced with more produce. It was time to send for Chiara and his son, Frank. They had five more children that survived into adulthood and eventually built the current store at 114 Washington Street. Word has it, one of his children still works at the store. ...My mouth watered over the mix of classic and gourmet delicacies. I was only disappointed that they were minutes away from closing time and my time here was far too short. As the woman rang me up on a cash register that I'm certain was the original, she wasn't so rushed that she couldn't take a moment to offer me a free sample of their "home" made caramels. It's a shame to see walking in an over abundance of wines and not impressed with any of their so called specialty and very little traditional Italian. I don't believe I saw any photos of Fortino's. Fortino's is absolutely magnificent. The PERFECT place to go for a candy treat. They have other food items too. Some may say it is a bit overpriced, but obviously those who shop here don't mind, otherwise it wouldn't be so busy. This place is small, it can be cramped. Don't go in the day before Christmas and not expect to wait a while. They have the tastiest chocolate concoctions. The turtles and chocolate covered oreos are so good. They have a variety of treats! I remember coming here as a kid and just staring googly eyed at all of the candy. I venture in every so often, but if you are visiting from out of town I highly recommend it.
