Ordered with my team for lunch. Delivery person was quick however the restaurant gave the delivery guy the wrong number, he was still very pleasant. The lo mein had a buttery taste, the pineapple chicken fried rice was bland and a regret. The general tao recipient said her food was great, the chicken wings were decent but pit in a steam bag which made them soggy and not crisp. No one likes soggy fried chicken wings. The egg roll was well done and seeping in grease. With chinatown being one stop away on the train I can't in good conscience recommend this place at all. Visited after moving our kid into college. Food was delicious! Had Lo mein, egg foo yung (not sure of the spelling sorry!), sweet n sour chicken, chicken wings, fried rice, beef and broccoli. This is my go to takeout/delivery Chinese restaurant. Their food is always fresh and tasty and deliveries arrive quickly. I was happy to see that they are open now during Covid. I had a $40 credit on Seamless so I decided to use it for this. I ordered the Orange beef, Beef with Scallions, Pork Fried Rice and Steamed Pork Dumplings. I have lived in the neighborhood for over 35 years and hardly ever frequented Fortune House before the pandemic. But once the other Chinese place (mostly for take out) down the block on Henry Street called Great Wall closed it's doors during the pandemic, Fortune House became the go-to at least twice a month for the lunch specials. Except a few months ago, I noticed that the faces at the front counter had changed and so had the flavor and quality of the food. It seems to be under new management and the chefs are hit or miss... mostly miss. Last time I ordered was about a month ago and it really is the LAST TIME. The food just didn't have the same flavor. I now head over to Montegue Street, to the tried and true, very authentic Chinese restaurant near the corner of Clinton Street, called Lichee Nut. Ordered from their website (Q Menu) so I wasn't able to track my delivery order (since the restaurant uses their own delivery driver). After the food not showing up way after the original quoted delivery time, I called the restaurant. They said that they weren't sure where my food was but it should have been delivered already. I waited for them to call their delivery driver only to be told that the delivery person "couldn't find my apartment address" so they left it with another apartment building across the street. I then had to go and find out which apartment building the food was left at. No apology from the delivery driver or restaurant, and they didn't even try to contact me when they couldn't "find my apartment address." My name and phone number were both listed on the actual ticket when I finally picked up my food. The doorman of the other building was equally as confused - he said the delivery driver insisted that the address was the same and just left. The food was mediocre/average. Nothing special or memorable about it - and the whole delivery experience ruined it for me. Unfortunately will not be ordering from here again. read more

I've ordered from here a handful of times and service and food has always been terrific. Have ordered both for large parties (think large metal catering dishes) and individual portions for delivery. Go to staples include sesame chicken, beef with broccoli, chicken lo mein and house special fried rice. Ordered the chicken with string beans today and it wowed me enough to write this 5-star review. String beans were fresh and perfectly blistered, pork was solid and good texture, lots of garlic and even some pickled vegetables cooked in for a nice touch. Not too greasy or salty, but packed with flavor. Living in downtown Brooklyn, this is on the edge of our delivery radius and easily one of my go to's when I'm in need of a Chinese menu of options not just SzeChuan spicy flavors from some of the closer by restaurants. I am so torn about this place. On the one hand, I love the taste of everything I order here, but damn... they are so stingy when it comes to the proteins. Fortune House makes delicious food, but they clearly stand guard over even the freaking chicken like a suburban dad watches a thermostat. The goodwill and repeat business they must lose from rubbing two nickels together to make a penny has to be incalculable. The practice probably generates more heat inside the restaurant than profit, so (tap, tap), is this thing on? It seems to piss off a lot of people who buy your lunch specials. I don't do that, so I get to see it undisguised by rice, and it's even more obvious that way. We get it - you're... ahem, frugal. But we also get that you have excellent recipes and execution. I would recommend from the bottom of my heart that you actually put some meat in your non-vegetarian dishes. You could also put eight wontons in your quart of excellent soup (along with a few token stands of char siu and maybe a few chopped scallion bits?), instead of six, or reliably provide more than a single mustard packet with a $25+ order. Moving on from the repeated and true accusations of being cheap bastards, however politely couched or true, we will now address the recurring theme of rudeness. It's true, but they have never been rude to me. I did once, however, watch and listen as the old man and the woman by the counter made extensive fun of one of their countrymen who was very proud of delivering Fortune House food on his bike and expanding their reach. The moment he walked out with a handful of menus and his delivery, they laid into him and laughed about his enthusiastic embrace of slavery in a way that made me want to walk out. Not cool. But nobody goes to Fortune House for cool. They go for close, and because it genuinely is very good food. The soups, the dumplings - those amazing shrimp balls... their unusual interpretation of twice-cooked pork... even the curry chicken with nearly no chicken, are nothing short of excellent in comparison to any other Chinese restaurant in the area. Sure, there are a hundred better places just across the river, but in Brooklyn Heights, this is the place. Also, they are *very generous* with the rice. read more

This was my first time trying this place and it was nothing short of unpleasant. Within my first bite of the chicken fried rice I pulled out a very long piece of hair out my mouth (it wasn't mine, it was a very different texture). It was so long that half the strand was in my mouth and the rest was still entangled in the rice. Not only did they not even offer to deliver a new batch but they made my friend walk back to get a "fresh" box of rice. I was so disgusted I didn't even bother continuing to eat my portion because obviously I care about my health. My friend was starving and because he didn't have hair in his food he was okay eating the "new rice" When he got to the restaurant they gave him a hard time because he didn't bring the box of rice with the hair for proof. The lady said "how did I know you didn't eat it"..... 1. We JUST left less than 10 mins ago. That would be savage to rush home to eat the rice and return for more. 2. It's $9.... why go through all that trouble for $9!!! I am really trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here but i had a pretty bad experience with them yesterday. I called and placed an order for pickup. It was Christmas and they apologized and said it would be 30 minutes. I said fine. I got there and there were many people waiting, some saying they'd been there for well over an hour. The phone never stopped ringing, the POS terminal kept announcing new GH/SS orders, and the staff was literally running back and forth trying to keep up. I had nothing but sympathy, and when my order was finally ready, 80 minutes later than promised, I tipped 20%, wished them well, and raced home to eat. That's when we discovered they forgot one dish and gave us our moo-shu pancakes with no moo-shu filling. Of the remaining dishes, the cold sesame noodles were much spicier than expected but excellent, the eggplant in garlic sauce was good (but cold), the scallion pancakes were fine, and the pad Thai was absolutely terrible. I know times are tough for restaurants. While I was waiting someone called to ask for a refund because their food hadn't arrived yet (which I would not do). I know they were swamped. Maybe on a normal night they would have nailed everything, but last night was pretty disappointing. I'm giving them three stars here to account for the above, but a normal night in normal times would have ranked much lower. read more

I ordered the General Tso's chicken for take out. It only took ~5 minutes for them to prepare my takeout. In the takeout bag, they include a fork, plenty of napkins, soy sauce, mustard, duck sauce, an oolong tea bag, and a fortune cookie which was nice. In terms of the meal, there was a Chinese takeout box with rice and a bowl with the General Tso's chicken. I think the chicken had the same crispy but soft texture good General Tso's usually has. It was a little too sweet for my taste and there was only like 2 pieces of brocolli. Also, there were many Tien Tsin peppers which didn't actually get into the taste of the chicken. Nevertheless, the speed and portions were great so I have to give this a 5 stars. read more
