Came here for a drink with a few friends because I know the beer selection is pretty dope. I ordered a very nice Hefeweizen. Loved it! They have a tv screen with the beer selections displayed nicely. We decided to grab a bite to eat. The Friday fish fry is huge and amazing!! Very good amount of food for the price. I loved the batter and fries. I think the kitchen staff left my fish fry in the fryer a bit too long, though. It was a bit burnt.. which affected the flavor. The dining area was small, but we were seated pretty fast even though they estimated a long wait. Looks like we went at just the right time. They have some outdoor seating but their indoor seating is adequately spaced and all of the workers have proper PPE. They enforce customer mask adherence and follow county mandates. Now on to the fun part - food! I had the Guinness Burger and boy was it hefty. The meat was well seasoned and perfectly cooked, with a delicious savory sauce that had those classic Guinness flavors. I literally come here about once a week to get the PB&J Burger and basically am obsessed with it...so much that my roommate tags along and does the same. I always ask for Medium Rare, and rarely has it not been cooked perfectly. The blackberry jam and peanut butter so perfectly compliment the natural flavor of the beef and bacon on the burger like you wouldn't believe. I will say lately I've noticed that not enough jam is being out on the burgers, so I always ask for extra on the side. The burger is not the same if there is not enough jam! Otherwise, you don't have to add anything to the burger nor should you. Eat it as served- if you put ketchup on it that's a crime! I've lost count on how many people I've had try it, who believe it or not also love it as much as I do! I always get the fries as my side and usually end up taking half home because of how nice the portion is. Also something to note, I have a weird thing against crinkle cut fries...Forty's crinkle cut fries are the only I think I will ever accept...always so good! Since I am such a frequenter, I have given other items on the menu a try, but 99% of the time order the PB&J Burger. Their stuffed peppers are amazing and definitely for those who don't mind more than just kick, they are definitely on the spicy side, but super delicious and filling! I've just recently tried the Beef on Weck wings, I was originally a bit hesitant, but am so glad I tried them. I am not even one for horseradish and I really enough them, I just do not think I could finish an entire order of them alone. Not sure how they are being leftovers either, so something to consider when ordering. Their Turkey Brie club was another good choice, and easily could be split between two people. Their French Onion is definitely something to try...if you're like me you know the best places to go are Gabriel's Gate and Cole's for French Onion, but Forty is definitely right up there as being the best! I usually get their Moscow Mule if I'm there for their happy hour, they're $5 at the bar! I could go on and on, but I live in the neighborhood and would say it is probably my favorite place on Elmwood to eat. I came here with my two best friends two nights ago. We wanted a fun night out. This place has a small outside patio. It was full and we would've had an hour and a half wait to be seated there. I didn't mind being seated inside. When you first walk in, there is a beautiful chandelier. This place has a fun vibe and the decor where we were seated (up the stairs) is very cool and interesting. There is a tv near where we were seated too. I ordered a Founders Nitro Breakfast Stout. I prefer dark beer and it was perfect and satisfying. I wanted a cocktail but they weren't making any because of Covid. I ordered the nachos for my meal. They were pricy at $15 but they were absolutely fantastic and very satisfying. You could get ground beef, steak or chicken. I ordered the ground beef. There were a ton of great toppings on top. The onions and queso were my favorite part. They made me really happy. Our waiter was very busy and rushing around. He didn't check on us often enough but when he was there, the service was good. I had to get up to ask for our checks. My two best friends weren't happy with their fries. They were frozen and not fresh cut. That isn't a deal-breaker for me. Came here with a friend for her birthday last night. I've always wanted to try it, as it's always looked hopping from the outside. Boy was it an experience! We went around 8:45/9 and the bar was packed. We grabbed a table so we could order some appetizers, and we were able to be seated right away. Unfortunately, we were seated next to a large group of people who were incredibly loud. It did take away from our overall experience, but our waitress apologized. Not the restaurant's fault at all! My friend got a beer, I got a twisted tea. Those were solid, of course, but the pretzel we got was heaven sent. HUGE portion (for $15, we were expecting it). Only complaint was that the cheese dip that came along with the pretzel had a grainy consistency that made it sort of unappealing to me. I will start off by saying this, if you love having a nice hearty lunch. That involves a nice burger and no crowds, I strongly suggest you come here. I always wanted to try this place out, but it was always jammed pack. Also it's hard to find parking on Elmwood, especially around dinner time to close. Fortunately, parking or dealing with a large crowd at Forty thieves during lunch hours, is not a problem. The interior is just how I like it, a industrial look with the feel of the prohibition era. The bar is a nice touch as well, you have the feeling after a long day of work. Just coming here getting a cold one and just unwinding before you go home. The place is actually larger inside than I thought by driving by. I like the fact it's clean and fresh smelling. As for the menu, it's limited in my opinion. Only because if you are not into burgers, you have a small section of salads and other small dishes, available to you. But do not let that deter you, the food is great. The portions are nice and well worth the price. I ordered the house burger, and everything was great. The meat was thick and juicy, the bun was soft and chewy and the condiments was fresh and clean. My wife ordered the chicken salad with avacado. Fresh greens and grilled chicken is always a nice thing. And there dressing, I want to say it's cilantro, but my wife thinks it's pesto. Great comeback from Blue Monk. Hot sunny day and was able to sit outside no wait. What impressed me most was the food! Shared the spinach artichoke bread bowl. The bread bowl was a fantastic plus and very filling. I had to slow down eating to save room for lunch. I got the Turkey Brie Club with pasta salad. It was very good. Sweet. My friend got the Ruben with parmesan fries. There was a small upcharge for the specialty fries which was expected. The serving sizes were crazy huge! Each half of the sandwich was a sandwich in its' own. I couldn't believe it. And the price for each sandwich was only $13. I would recommend splitting 1 sandwich between 2 people. More than enough. The pasta salad was also refreshingly good! I will definitely be returning here for food and drinks! If you enjoyed Blue Monk, then I recommend coming back to give Forty Thieves a try. read more

Drinks were good, but the girl bartender had to take the very faded specialty drink menu back because she didn't know the recipe. Bar are appeared dirty, garbage was visible on the floor behind the bar. Our waitress was terrific and seemed to go above and beyond knowing our disappointment with the bar. Food was pretty good. I have been to Forty Thieves twice now. The first time was pre-pandemic and not too long after they first opened. We stopped in on a weekend brunch time bar crawl. We were having fun in the crowded bar room when about half way through our first round of drinks a pipe in their main room started aggressively leaking (bursting?) and started pouring water like Niagara Falls on the table we were gathered around. This sucked and some of us got wet. I'm not really penalizing them for it in the review because things happen, but I shared that story because it's relevant to my experiences here. My wife and I have been trying to eat out once or twice a week to help local businesses while things are shut down, so last night we got wings from Forty Thieves. The order we placed was simple, 20 wings - 10 medium and 10 extra hot (we ordered these wings and asked for them to be made extra saucy). I suppose in the strictest sense of the word we got exactly what we ordered, but in eating the wings it didn't feel that way. They were smallish, but well cooked, the problem was the sauce. The mediums tasted like nothing, it felt like they went from the deep fryer to the box. The extra hot saucy wings we ordered? They came basically dry with what I would call a passable medium sauce. The summarized version of this is that my opinion is that it was a nice bar, that's a good spot for a drink but they have absolutely terrible wings. read more

I really enjoyed my experience at Forty thieves. The ambiance is cozy. We decided to sit outside since it was a nice cool day out. The waitress was pretty attentive and was very knowledgeable with what was on the menu. For an appetizer, I ordered the devils eggs. It was different than I'm used to but very good. They fried the entire egg and had this amazing yellow sauce underneath it. It's worth a try because it's tastey and nothing like I've tasted before. For the entree, I tried my friend's beef tenderloin and it was cut and cooked to perfection (it was about medium rare). I had my first ever steak hoagie here (something buffalo is known for) and I wasn't disappointed. It was very yummy and filling! If you're in the area definitely check em' out! Really bad service, like really bad I almost walked out after 15 minutes of sitting at the bar. Really disappointing service. The food is ok but not worth it. After coming back multiple times after my initial review, I will say they have redeemed themselves in my opinion. The food is still good and the service is still good. I have been going for lunch compared to dinner as I have said before that there are very busy around that time due to how my schedule is right now and I do not regret it. One of the things that you have to try is the French onion soup. When you see it come out you know it will be good when the cheese is broiled over the bowl and then break into the soup itself which is very well seasoned and worth the money. The bartender couldn't have been more unfriendly, her morose demeanor didn't make either of us feel welcome ! We get a table after waiting at the bar and we waited for a very long time to receive our menus Then my one friend goes to the restroom and she came back stating in her stall that water came gushing out from above and almost hit her as she was doing her business. Kinda scary / frightening!!!! We order the nachos which looked amazing and tasted very good yet waitress didn't provide plates /utensils or napkins. We had to ask for them !!!!! Then my other GF wanted to order a beer and the menu arrived with the print being worn off so you couldn't see the choices. The Stacked Portobello Tomato item was greasy and the mushroom was tiny. My friends both ordered the Guinness Burgers and there was too much sauce which drowned the burger and that too was a disappointment!!!! I didn't give a low-star review because I don't want to punish a great pub for my dietary needs, but I would consider Forty Thieves a pretty poor option for gluten free eating. They have a couple of salads, which are very nice. But, other than that they just have a giant baked potato (which I've had previously and which is good). The wings are done in a shared fryer and even the "pit" wings are fried first and then grilled. So, great to stop in for a drink or to eat if you are in the mood for the ubiquitous salad, but otherwise, probably better to eat somewhere else if you need to be GF. read more

Halfway thru the bartender getting our drinks ready, we learn our table is ready and our bartender says she'll bring our drinks to us. When she delivers them she tells us to just alert our server on what we ordered. When our server arrives we let her know what we ordered, when she returns, she brings us another round (that we did not order). We explain the situation to her, apologized for the confusion and misunderstanding, and she leaves the drinks on our table anyways. We proceed to order food, endure a long wait time, enjoy ourselves, and appreciate the kind vibe of our waiter and other staff. However, when our bill came, we noticed that we had been charged for the extra round that we did not order. When we inquired about the ambiguous "cocktail" charge and reminded our server that we had not ordered that second round, her only response was that "everything ordered at the bar is automatically rang up as a cocktail" and that she had "even double checked with the bartender". Confused and not wanting to cause a scene, we agreed to let her take our card and left a good tip cause she was nice, aside from robbing us at the end. I love the chicken wings and the fries comes out in a cookie sheet pan that was so great. I gave it a 3 star because I watch 3 elderly women with canes trying there hardest to get down a flight of stairs because the dining level was upstairs. There are a few tables and a bar that u can eat at including going outside but if you are trying to eat with 4 or more it's going to be upstairs and I feel that's not a great establishment for elderly people even though the food was great. First off, I am so excited that a new restaurant moved into this space. On Elmwood Avenue, there really isn't a better address than 727. The Blue Monk was THE neighborhood place to go for good food and beer, and there was an insane amount of anticipation for the new Forty Thieves to carry on this location's legacy of greatness. But after swinging by the new restaurant for some drinks, I'm pretty bummed (and I hate to say that). The beer list was mediocre, and at $7 a pint, the price was pretty steep for a neighborhood pub. When thinking about how extensive the Blue Monk beer list was, there just isn't any comparison here. The decor also felt off. I loved reading about how the restaurant name and concept was inspired by New York's first gang, and I expected the space to look a little grungier. As is, the decor is a mix of the old Blue Monk with some new industrial details. The bar area looks nice with some cool industrial shelving, but then there are pieces that seem out of place like two chandeliers near the entry and a big floral arrangement on the bar. And then there's the bathroom, which looks/smells like something you'd see in a college dive bar. I'm giving a three star review because I completely realize the restaurant just opened; so much can change for the better after the initial growing pains wear off. I just wish the owners would have taken the time to really create something different. Locals will always compare any restaurant that moves into this space to the Blue Monk, and the only way to get beyond that is to introduce something completely new. Forty Thieves feels similar to the Blue Monk, but not as good. And that's a huge bummer. I want to see this place succeed and will definitely give it another try (the menu looks good!). First time eating at this place and I love it. The decor is definitely nice, NYC chic which I am used to, having lived in NYC for a decade. I love their wooden tables; upside, the chairs are definitely too low giving how high their tables are. I ordered myself the stacked burger, which is basically two burger patties, LTO and their secret sauce (yum). I wish I could have gotten a bottle of the secret cause because it is amazing. I added provolone cheese to my burger and it was perfect. The burger was well done but not dry at all, it was juicy, well seasoned and super tasty. It comes with a order of crinkle cut fries and man, they give you a decent amount fries (couldn't finish mine). The fries are seasoned with salt and oregano I believe, it was delicious, some pretty good fries. Overall I enjoyed my meal, the decor was awesome and our waiter was adorable. read more

I'm not the best judge since my options at Forty Thieves are pretty limited as a vegetarian, but this is a decent spot for bar food on Elmwood. I had the portobello sandwich, which is kind of a vegetarian staple when dining out. This one was messy, since the yolk in the fried egg was very runny, but this was one of the tastier portobello sandwiches I've eaten. The mushroom has definitely been marinated to boost the flavor, and there's also aioli in the sandwich. Just be prepared to use multiple napkins if you order it. (In comparison, my husband ordered the Stack Burger and fries, and was fine with one napkin.) The servers were nice. I wasn't a fan of the giant TV in the back dining area, but they were playing Shrek when we were there for lunch, so I guess this place may be okay for kids, at least during the day. I reviewed this establishment in October 2020 and gave it a 2-star review because I had gone there on numerous occasions and had bad service and mixed up food orders. I live within walking distance to Forty Thieves and had company flying in from out of town. Their flight was delayed, so i needed a place to eat, and where the kitchen would be open late. I checked the Forty Thieves website and saw that the kitchen was open until 11 pm and the bar until 2am. We arrived at about 10:15pm only to be told the kitchen closed at 10pm. My college professor for American Sign Language (who, keep in mind, is deaf herself) took the class out for an extra credit situation of a "Silent Dinner". Essentially we would all go and dine as if we ourselves were deaf to learn the experience. No verbal talking, just alternative communication. There were 15 of us to be seated and the restaurant only provided 3 tables with 11 seats. When asked to provide another table so that we could seat everyone, the remaining 4 left standing around. The staff, primarily a woman in a blue shirt (I didn't catch her name) adamantly told us no. Claiming her boss had said we could only have 3 tables even though the clearly couldn't fit everyone. Claiming that they had to save the remaining tables for "other guests" (it was 5 PM on a Tuesday. A bar / kitchen is not going to receive that many people until much later). She said that we as a group were "frustrating" even though most of us were silent and only occasionally chimed in to show how her logic was flawed. The employee began pulling a victim card in randomly tearing up while at the same time she was yelling at our, again, deaf sign language professor. Overall a very unappealing experience. Would not recommend this place. They lost quite a lot of business that night outside of two men who were still sat at the bar. Every other table was empty. read more

I decided to order a whiskey sour with wood for reserve and got the best whiskey sour I've ever had in my life. Multiple servers walked by and always checked on us making sure we had what we needed. Food was amazing. I chose a beyond burger with fries and it was so fresh and perfectly cooked. I really loved that we didn't have to ask for salt and pepper, everything came out well seasoned in such a timely and accurate manner. I will definitely be back and for sure recommend. Forty Thieves was pretty good. Would it be on the top of my list for dinner? Probably not. But the atmosphere is fun and the drinks were pretty good so it would be a good place to go back and hang out in the bar area. Maybe it's my fault, because I was attempting to find something somewhat healthy, but it's really more pub food. I thought deviled eggs would be ok, but they had to go and deep fry them, which I don't really understand. There are a few salads but I was a bit disappointed with that too. My friends dishes also seems needlessly greasy. The price was great because we went during restaurant week and doesn't seem too expensive otherwise. The music was fun, the atmosphere is cool.
