Muddy but fun! My kids love digging around and collecting rocks. I took them to fossil park and everyone had a great time. The park is easy to find. It has a nice pavilion for eating lunch and restrooms. There is a nice walking section around the park. The fossil area is easy to get to with many signs explaining what to look for. My kids were excited that they found fossils right away. Mostly shell looking fossils plus some pieces of coral. We each brought home a small bag of items to sort through. Since everything was money it was hard to rinse anything off there so we had to wait until we get home to see what we found. Lots of things that we still need to research. Highly recommend them adding a sluice style washing area like the gem mining setups you see at campgrounds. Plus a great playground. read more

Fun little place to collect some fossils. There are no facilities here though, so if you want drinks or snacks you'll have to bring them. If you need to use the restroom you'll have to stop somewhere before you get there. read more

Fossil Park is essentially a big hole in the ground. I suggest you don't wear sandals. I took our young children here recently, and we spent about 40 mins exploring the hole in the ground. The kids were happy to look for fossils and other interesting rocks. There are a few picnic tables near by; although, I cant see enjoying a meal while surrounded by rocks, fossils and dust. I would not recommend you make a special trip to Fossil Park. If you are heading to the zoo or art museum, you can just add this destination as a side attraction. read more

We came here since sometime before and enjoyed looking for fossils and rocks, but I would not eat here cuz the amount of dust is ridiculous. I highly suggest we're in hiking boots and wear pants if possible. It was good time but good as a side trip. read more

My 4 year-old is really into the idea of digging for dinosaur bones, so when we told her about Fossil Park, she interpreted that as digging for dinosaur bones. Although there are no dinosaurs to be found here, there are plenty of fossilized shells and similar things. Both she and our 3 year-old really got a kick out of it. It was nearly 90 degrees in the late afternoon whenwe visited, and with very little shade there, it was HOT. You will want to visit earlier in the morning or on a cool day. There are some paved paths that surround the digging site which look great for biking or walking or jogging. You should bring a small brush to brush off your fossils. (there were also some lying around from past visitors when we arrived) There is a water jug available to rinse your fossils off. Within an hour or so, we found several fossils. Use the larger rocks to break the medium-sized rocks. I think this is a cool stop for kids who are really interested in this sort of thing. But I can see how it wouldn't be everyone's thing. The park is a great idea, and the facility very nice, except that there are usually not many fossils to be found, because they seldom replenish the rocks there. So visitors (especially kids) usually have to hunt hard just to find a few small fossil bits. Quarry trucks drive right by the site virtually every day, so there is no reason they could not dump fresh rocks and rubble from the fossil layers on a regular basis, which would allow many more people to find more and better fossils. The city should be asked to work with the quarry on this, since it could bring a lot more tourists into the area, and be very educational for kids. If already is, but could be far better if they'd replenish the rocks more often (say every couple months, instead of every few years, as appears to be the case). read more
