Went to fosters as a drop in and was met by James, he was a very kind man that welcomed me in, I felt a very welcoming vibe from his school, he is extremely knowledgeable l and the gym was very clean, his students were all very skilled and non of them had an ego especially for someone visiting, if I lived in Seattle I would definitely sign up here, my favorite is the advance class for blue belts and up it's definitely a concept I wish other gyms would incorporate, this is an incredible place and I hope that anyone reading this would give this place a try. This is the only school with multiple classes throughout the day running 7 days a week. You won't find that at any other school. I trained three years at fosters and had to quit due to a medical condition. A few years later, I decided I was able to train again and started looking at schools. Bigger brand name schools like GB doesn't compared. The lack of classes 7 days of week left something to be desired. Foster is a family atmosphere. Friday nights was my second home. Back to back classes with a bunch of people just having fun. So much great experience. I recommended fosters over any other school plus it's in a warehouse not a strip mall like most schools!!! read more

AWESOME EXPERIENCE Hands down! I was on a business trip and dropped into Seattle of course with my Gi because being consistent is key to any martial art. I honestly should of called professor Foster ahead of time but I was very excited to be close to many schools cause Southern Maryland has no jiu jitsu school besides my self and those who train with me. As I walked in I was pretty nervous not sure what to expect but Professor Foster noticed me and walked up with a smile and introduced himself. I explained I was visiting, what school I was from, who my professor was, my rank and I wanted to continue my training. He smiled again and gave me the green light after I sign a liability form. During the training it was open gym so I got as many rounds as I could with his students and instructors. Every single person had the same welcoming vibe and tough game a long with it. I was in Seattle for business and was looking for a good spot to drop in. Everyone had good reviews, so where should I go? I read a review on another fellow traveler that had a good time here, so I decided to call and Instructor Foster answered and was extremely cool on the phone and welcomed my visit! I got there and was surprised at the size of the place! There were a lot of students and they have a healthy amount of colored belts! It wasn't hard to make friends and drills were great! Lots of places teach moves, but Instr. Foster pushed the concept. First roll was with Instructor Foster, and I don't know about you, but I love rolling with black belts! It's amazing how advanced they are! Rolling with new schools are great because you get to feel their techniques. Very strong guards here in both offense and defense. Lots of pressure and technique! These guys are legit! I was invited to visit the next day too, and I would've totally gone, but my hotel didn't have a laundry room, and I didn't have time to drop my gi off at a cleaner. Amazing BJJ Academy! I made the mistake of going to another "school" to train Jiu Jitsu and after about 6 mo. I realized I was in the wrong place. I was left seeking a place that was both technical in its training and that had the right atmosphere for me. After coming in to train for the first night here at Fosters, I knew I was in the right place. James Foster is an exceptional professor with sharp tact when it comes to teaching BJJ. You can tell that when teaching us, he is drawing from a long history of experience and not getting his info from the internet like some other places. He is also extremely patient with newbies and stresses the importance of safety and also emphasizes the importance of BJJ only being used in training, tournaments and in self defense situations only (which is critical for the kids). He doesnt put up with ego's or any other idiocy, and tells us that this is a drama free zone, and that we are coming here to leave the drama of the outside world at the door (which is a huge plus for me, having dealt with nonsense before). The assistant coaches (Rick, Bobbi, etc) are also very knowledgeable and push us to achieve our goals at every class. The conditioning during warm ups are perfect, as they have truly helped my cardio (which was seriously lacking) and I feel i've learned more in the 3 months of being at this school, that I ever did at the old place. The students all come to train hard and dont treat each other as unequal counter parts, rather they go out of their way to help improve each others game. I have brought a couple people from my old "school" to Fosters, and I intend to bring more of my friends to this wonderful academy. You will never find a bad thing about James Foster or his school online, which says a lot about the reputation of both him and the people that train here. I am glad I made the switch for the better! The depth of the instructors and training partners is really hard to find in any academy for BJJ. Amazing gym and people!! I came on Saturday during open mat and when you don't know anyone and you're a white belt from out of town that can be a little awkward. One of their black belts Ben approached me as I was finishing warming up, introduced himself and asked if I wanted to roll. He went easy but allowed me to work my passes and sweeps but kept it interesting. Then I was sitting and watching some others roll when Phil came up and asked if I needed to work on anything. I thought that was amazing and since I needed work on EVERYTHING, we just rolled and he pointed out things he noticed. Spent almost the whole time working with Phil and I am happy I chose Fosters Jiu Jitsu to come to. Mats were clean, people were awesome and I got to learn.
