Unlike other fine dining experiences where they are shy on the pourings, they are extremely generous. Make sure you are staying within walking distance or have a designated driver. This was my first experience at a B&B and I must say, the bar has been set quite high. We were greeted by Diane and given the house tour and shown to our room. We had the Mountain View room which had lovely, homey, furnishings with a sitting room full of Windows and a bathroom with a spa shower! It was everything I had imagine a B&B to be, but more. No cell service, no tv. Bliss. Folks actually met downstairs in the living room and spoke to each other. Perfect strangers. It was so refreshing to meet others and speak to them without a single phone in sight. Breakfast is served together at tables for two and all 10 of us again met in the morning and compared notes about our previous day and said our good mornings before filing into the dining room to the scent of freshly made scones. Breakfast was exquisitely prepared by the awesome Chef John. I am gluten free and he prepared gf scones just for me and also made the German pancake gf for my dietary restrictions. The avocado mango salsa and chipotle cream sauce was amazing. John and Diane provided a warm, welcoming retreat from the hustle and bustle of the greater DC area. My wife recently made reservations at the Foster Harris House for my family and I to celebrate my birthday. Klaus has put together an amazing bed and breakfast in The Shenandoah Valley with a top notch chef and welcoming environment. He immediately makes the impression of both a master host and hospitality manager having combined every element of a great B&B and restaurant. This is a review for dinner. My husband and I went to Washington, VA for a night in March and I booked Foster Harris House for an early anniversary dinner. We had reservations for the Inn but I felt like something a little more low-key. I am so we came here! My husband and I loved it, it was one of the best dinners we have ever had. I would definitely recommend the wine pairing as they picked out excellent wines to compliment the courses. Since we didn't stay there, I regret we didn't get to have their breakfast. In any case, I booked a night in the fall as soon as we got home so we can try the breakfast (and try the Inn for dinner). John and Dianne were gracious and engaging with all the guests as they served dinner. It is a very intimate setting with only room for about 10 people. You don't feel like you have to talk to the other guests but we did at times and had wonderful conversations with them. It was a wonderful way for us to celebrate our anniversary. read more

Had dinner with wine paring on 4/25/2015 to celebrate my husband's birthday, The Foster Harris House is a lovely, intimate setting (sitting is limited to 10 people Thurs, Fri, and Sat) and makes us continue to love this place. John and Diane always makes us feel welcomed. The experience is very relaxed and casual. And the food is very good (5 courses of deliciousness and beautifully presented). I particularly enjoy the feeling of not feeling rushed as this experience usually takes 3 hours to complete. The menu is prix fixe and the courses served when we dined there this past weekend included: 1) Lobster napoleon with apple fennel slaw and mango vinaigrette - Amazing, wish I had brought the menu home as they had a lovely Rose that was served with this course 2) Spring tonic soup with lemon froth - Unique and light 3) Local morel mushrooms and asparagus pappardelle with boschetto al tartufo - My favorite course, I had never had morel mushrooms before and the entire dish was so delicious. I could have eaten several more bowls of this. 4) Pan roasted filet mignon with bearnaise butter, lime sweet potatoes and spinach cashew pesto - Very flavorful, filet mignon was cooked perfectly. Everything on the plate complemented each other. 5) Blueberry lemon frangipane tart with chocolate mint gelato and toffee sauce - Perfect ending to a great meal. Mint used in the gelato came from their own garden. This was a light and dessert that was not overly sweet. Thank you again John and Diane for a lovely evening. A wonderful experience from start to finish. We checked into the Mountain View room which, in addition to the bedroom, has a quaint little adjoining room with two chairs, a small round table and a breathtaking view of the mountains. Everything in the room was perfect and immaculate. The breakfasts are amazing; Chef Dawn is incredibly talented. One piece of advice: come hungry. Do not pass on the homemade scones. Addicting! The new owner, Klaus, along with Chef Dawn and her daughter, Zoe, made our two night stay complete. I've been raving about it to my friends and am excited to spread the good word on Yelp. Honestly, this was the highlight of our weekend and completely out-shined The Inn at Little Washington. The Foster Harris House is a Bed & Breakfast (B&B) located not even a half mile from the The Inn at Little Washington. The B&B is run by a married couple, Diane and Jon who took over house ten years ago. From check-in to check-out the Foster Harris House epitomized customer excellence. Upon checking in one of the owners, Diane, promptly greeted us giving us a quick tour of the B&B and showed us to our room. The room was very comfortable and cozy, no TV, but wireless internet and a telephone was available for use. Coffee and tea were available at 7:30am, and breakfast was served at 9:30am. Up until this point, we hadn't seen the other owner, Jon, until breakfast the next morning and we understood why. Jon is also the B&B's head chef and busy preparing the meals for guests. Breakfast our first morning was truly remarkable, each dish was delicious and you could tell was prepared with his undivided attention (see pictures, words can't really do it justice, besides to tell you good it was). The Foster Harris house also serves a pre-fixed 5 course dinner menu on Friday and Saturday nights. We had reserved a table Saturday night, and honestly we wish we had dined with them both Friday and Saturday night (even if it was the same menu). The other thing I forgot to mention about their dining room is that its small and only accommodates about five tables, but this makes for a very intimate setting, and really helps make the experience. This goes without saying, but dinner was superb, and the wine pairings were phenomenal. What also made the evening unique, Jon the owner/chef, came out during dinner and offered to swap up some of the wines based on earlier comments we had made about wines we liked and he thought would go better with the dishes for us. Truly, a magical evening, Jeff and I consider ourselves foodies (especially Jeff as he comes from a family of chefs) and we could not stop talking about dinner. Sunday morning, (breakfast again amazing) we overheard a couple other guests there talking about how they had ate dinner at The Inn at Little Washington the previous night. I felt bad for them because they had missed out on the real hidden gem of eating dinner at the Foster Harris House. Besides, the food being amazing, as mentioned above the level of customer service was truly phenomenal. Every time was saw Diane, she seemed truly interested on what we had planned for the day and had suggestions for trips, routes, sight-seeing, etc. She also had printed maps ready for scenic drives and also for our drive home. This was a real time saver since there was no cell phone reception to use our phone's GPS! Diane and Jon have been at this for ten years and you can tell that they truly enjoy what they do and that comes across to their guests. Overall, we would highly the Foster Harris House and hope that you decide to check them out too, we can't wait to stay there again! It's also worth mentioning that Jon and Diane run a cycling tour, I don't have much details other than that though, but I'm sure they have amazing tours mapped out! read more

I cannot say enough good things about our experience at the Foster Harris House. At every turn, they provide a warm welcome, gorgeous/comfy accommodations, and an atmosphere that one cannot help but feel relaxed in. They go the extra mile - for example, I had forgotten to warn them of my wife's allergy to nuts until sitting down to breakfast. They didn't even blink an eye. My wife and I spent two enjoyable nights at the Foster-Harris House with Klaus and Gisele Peters. I first encountered Klaus during my telephone call to reserve a room--he was very affable with a delightful sense of humor. Since he offers a four-course gourmet breakfast he asked about dietary needs, which was important due to my wife's diabetes . . . and before our arrival he called me to confirm whether his famous breakfast scones would be OK, which they were (and delicious!). So thoughtful! Upon our arrival his warmth, friendliness, and sense of humor made us feel like we had known each other for years. The house, built in 1905, is in remarkably good condition . . . the rooms are nicely appointed, clean and well maintained . . . and the bed in our Mountain View room way-y-y-y too comfortable. The bathroom, though small, is well-designed and remodeled with modern shower, pedestal sink, mirrors, and bright lighting. Wonderful view of the property, mountains, English garden (Gisele's handiwork) and herb garden (chef Kendra's handiwork). The breakfasts are the best ever . . . compliments to the chef! Stunning meal. The host Klaus was wonderful from the time of booking through to the goodbyes. It is a 6 course menu for 5 couples, but the Chef enthusiastically put together a vegan and gluten free menu just for me. It was only comparable to Elizabeth's Gone Raw for the respect for plants, creativity, flavor, diversity and presentation. It was an absolute privilege and a joy to eat. My husband along with the other 8 diners had the "regular" menu, which he enjoyed and also looked beautiful. Great wine as well. We will definitely return for special celebrations! read more

We stayed in the Meadow Room Friday night while visiting the Inn at Little Washington for dinner. This was our first B&B experience, as we normally opt to stay in hotels. But Foster Harris was so convenient for our dinner reservation, we chose to try a B&B. We were not disappointed. The owners made us feel at home right away. The room was spacious, quiet, and very clean. I particularly liked the meadow room because it's tucked in the back of the house. Other than the adjoining bathroom's door being a bit tricky to latch and unlatch (to be expected given the house's age) and the mattress being a tad firm for our own personal taste, the room was great. Well-appointed and all of the linens, towels, robes, etc. were of fantastic quality. There are ample refreshments throughout the house, a mini fridge with beverages, self-serve port, and wine and beer available upon request. There are also wine glasses and a waiter's cork screw in your room, which was most helpful. In the morning, coffee and tea are available on the second floor before breakfast. Breakfast was divine. The fruit parfait was delicious; my husband who doesn't much care for yogurt loved it. The amount and quality of fresh fruit was impressive. The ginger scones (almost biscuit-like) were delicious and not too sweet. The salsa and bacon in the main course were packed with flavor. The poached egg was perfectly cooked. The final course of pancakes with maple butter sauce and chocolate were my favorite part, and because of the mini-mini size, left me wanting more... Overall it was a great experience and we would visit again. read more

From the time of arrival to day of departure, the owners, John and Diane, welcomed us into their beautiful home, but also, catered to our every need. We stayed in the Mountain View room, which was large and spacious, and had a shower with multiple jets. A wonderful treat after a day of exploring. The breakfasts were delicious and different every morning (we spent 3 nights). Dinner was exceptional and the presentation was unbelievable. We actually had dinner at a table in the kitchen. Being there, we took photos, asked questions, and learned about the area from John and Ethan, all while they were preparing gourmet dishes. A wonderful experience!! This was our first time here and we look forward to returning the next time we visit the area. The dining room has limited seating so I recommend making reservations in advance. Several callers were not able to be accommodated since our Thursday dinner was sold out in advance. We were looking for somewhere to stay after having dinner at the Inn at Little Washington (a few blocks away) to celebrate a birthday, and chose the Foster Harris house. It was a perfect experience in every way. The property is incredibly tasteful and elegant and decorated beautifully, but it's also very functional (comfortable beds, great bathroom and spa shower, etc.). That alone would have made for a great stay, but Klaus (the owner) truly went above and beyond to make our visit enjoyable. He had a glass of wine waiting for us and a surprise bottle of champagne to help us celebrate. We arrived slightly later than we originally thought, and Klaus personally drove us to the restaurant so that we wouldn't have to walk in the cold or be late for our reservation. We needed to leave early the next day, and he was up and made us the most amazing breakfast - on our schedule - including fresh, homemade ginger scones and the best bacon I've ever eaten. John and Diane really take care of all the details that make the difference between a good experience and a great one. About four and a half stars. The little brother to its more famous neighbor in Little Washington. The food is imaginative, well prepared, and worth the trip. Compared to the Inn, I would say that the Inn has slightly better food, but everything else is better at Foster Harris House. The price is about half that of the Inn, the atmosphere is more intimate (space for only 10 people), and the service is the best I've ever experienced with Diane being an absolutely fantastic hostess and the chef coming out to serve the dishes himself. read more

We've known John and Diane for years and have always heard rave reviews about the breakfasts at the Inn. Being a local, we never found ourselves able to see what the fuss was about. This past weekend we were able to finally able to put the curiosity to bed after and outstanding dining experience. "Dining Experience" is the only proper way to describe it. To say we had a great meal would short change them. From the moment you arrived and were given a champagne cocktail, to the quick, or not so quick chats with the owners about the different courses and the abundant amount of hospitality, the meal sailed past the three hour mark before we even knew it. We were able to dine at the Inn at Little Washington and ate in the kitchen with the Chef's Tasting menu. The food at the FHH was on par with the Inn for quality, but for overall experience, I'd have to give the edge to John and Diane, they are both spectacular at their craft. read more
