Welcome!

Hospitality is defined as "friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers." Klaus ensures that everyone starts as a guest and departs as a friend. The inn itself is well appointed and the minute you step inside you feel as if you have come home and you can rest your weary bones. The bucolic and sweeping views of the scenic countryside do not disappoint, while still within walking distance of Main Street attractions and dining for those wanting to enjoy the famous Michelin restaurant nearby. However, save room for breakfast at the inn. Chef Ken makes his own maple, sage and rosemary herb sausage, spiced bacon, and egg stuffed crepes to delight! From the start of your day that begins with the specially blended coffee or tea, then a delicious breakfast that is hearty and gastronomical treat. Ken takes great pride in his cooking and soon you too will be a member of the "clean plate club". After a day out exploring, come back to your lovely appointed room and sit on the couples couch reading by the fireplace. Truly relaxing! Then, before you retire for the evening, enjoy the multi-spigot shower that massages you from all sides. Truly an exceptional way to end your day! Climb into the soft, comfortable bed and soon you will be drifting off and dreaming...knowing that you will be fortunate to awaken to another wonderful gourmet breakfast and fascinating conversation with Klaus. Did you know that he crossed paths with former presidents when he managed other bespoke hotels? His impeccable and genuine hospitality makes you feel as if you are the most important person in the room, while also making you feel like an old friend who has come to visit. Klaus will make suggestions based on your interests of places to explore from whiskey tastings, coffee roasters, and nearby nature attractions~ they all were wonderful places to experience, so make sure you ask. Finally, when it is time to depart, you already know that you want to come back again soon.

We don't live far from Washington, VA and needed to spend just a single night in the area to prepare for other plans starting the next day, so we reserved a room at The Foster Harris House. We were already familiar with this Inn, having known about it since the McPherson's owned it and hearing nothing but rave reviews, so it was always a place we wanted to stay. The house is historic and beautifully decorated, offering updated amenities. The room we enjoyed was very comfortable and beautiful! We arrived to beautifully-prepared cookies on a cloche-covered plate in our room, next to a personalized letter to us, specific to our visit and welcoming us. The location is perfect... located within a quick walk to The Inn at Little Washington and everything else one might visit in this beautiful town. The bed was amazing! Towels were excellent and so was the water pressure from the shower. Our hosts, Klaus and Gisselle Peters were very outgoing, friendly, and accommodating! Klaus prepares, serves, and hosts morning breakfasts at this Inn as well and he does a great job keeping guests happy and in good spirit. He also prepares an amazingly delicious breakfast, which is quite substantial, at 4 courses! Overall, we really enjoyed staying here and would recommend The Foster Harris House to those looking to stay in the area.

Breakfast! Egg crepe with béarnaise sauce, bacon, potatoes and tomato

We lovedddd our stay at the foster harris house! Klaus and Gisele were so kind and hospitable and made sure we were well taken care of. We stayed in the macpherson room which was cozy and comfortable with an updated bathroom and an electric fireplace. I also liked that the room had a small hallway giving us an extra level of privacy. There's no service in town so they provided a cell phone in our room and wifi. Now onto Klaus' breakfast - SO GOOD. I'll be dreaming of his ginger scones forever. It was served at 9am both days we were there and it was 4 courses! Scones, fruit/yogurt parfait, egg dish (omg the béarnaise sauce) and a small dessert. It was perfect and the coffee was delicious! Everyone who comes to town goes to the Inn for dinner but do yourselves a favor and stay a 5 min walk down the road.

View from our room - Mountain View!

Staying here for a quick get away from our 4 year old and crazy work schedule on a Monday through Wednesday schedule. Bed is very comfortable. Klaus - owner - is accommodating and very informative. Delicious cookies were provided in our room and bottled water. Breakfast is so delicious! We were served crepe filed with soft scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, and tomatoes as one of the courses. Ginger scone and fruit parfait prior. Finished with a blue berry cake for dessert!! Our view from our room is beautiful. 4.5 stars because dinner is only available Thursday through Sunday and refreshments were not in the living room as described by Klaus.

We had a stellar getaway, wonderfully hosted by Klaus and Gisele. Truly marvelous! Arrival: we were greeted upon arrival by Gisele gardening outside and then received a warm welcome and tour of the inn by Klaus, who helped us carry our bags to our room. Mountain View room: exquisite room, well maintained/clean, comfortable bed, chairs and sofa. The bathroom was immaculate with a great shower. The sitting room had outstanding views of the mountains, fresh flowers and orchids to greet us, and a greeting card accompanied by cookies and fruit! Dinner: we met the other dining guests in the waiting room, and had some time to chat with the other guests, Klaus and Gisele, who also served champagne to start the night off. You could opt for the tasting menu paired with wines or without. Klaus prepared a light, nonalcoholic fruity drink to go with one of our guests' meal. For the wine pairing, each glass was delightful and accompanied each course marvelously. The seven meal course was outstanding - great soup, veggies, meat, seafood, etc. Yummy salad was served before dessert - very delicious European! We appreciated the explanation of each course and ingredients as prepared and presented by chef Stephen. Breakfast: After a restful evening, we were greeted with fresh french press coffee and hot water for tea outside our room. We leisurely lounged around until breakfast time, where we made our way to a delicious meal! Delightful ginger scones (prepared by Klaus!), outstanding bacon and potatoes and eggs, a fruit parfait, and finally, apple dessert! Even if we hadn't stayed at the inn for dinner, breakfast with lodging was well worth it. Property: chilly but crisp and beautiful in the winter. There is plenty of outdoor seating, and Klaus even has plans to create a garden! The backdrop is of the mountains, it's a breathtaking view. The town is small and intimate, you feel right at home at the inn. Overall: we'd highly recommend both the dinner and stay as they were well worth the value! The food and rooms will be remembered and we are already in talks of returning! The attention to detail and care in your stay provided by the owners created such a wonderfully relaxing evening, even if you choose to stay there without dining.

Such a great weekend!! The Inn just changed ownership/management and the new ladies (Zoe and Dawn) that we met were absolutely fabulous. Our room was beautiful and comfortable, the surrounding area was adorable and easy to walk/bike around, and the food.... the food!! Our breakfast and dinner at the Foster Harris House were out of this world. Just ridiculously yummy and fun. Dawn is the new chef and she's incredibly talented and kind. I highly recommend this place for a peaceful, beautiful weekend. So happy for the experience!

I think it is about time that I review the FHH as it deserves a glowing review! Upon arriving we were greeted by Diane who showed us the amenities and Inn and showed us to our room. We stayed in the Compton Room which was very luxurious with a very comfy love seat, high bed, and very beautiful shower. Upon settling in we were asked if we wanted any wine, beer, or other drinks and Diane brought drinks to our room for us to enjoy. The attention to detail in the room was amazing from the wiring of lighting to the "Fashion Emergency" kit in the desk drawer; I was impressed. Coffee is served around 7:00 outside the rooms on the 2nd level and there were plenty of tea options too. I have stayed at many beds and breakfasts but I must say that the breakfast at the FHH is truly spectacular. The 4-course breakfast rivals any other sit down breakfast I've ever had. Seriously. Blackberry glazed bacon, mango chipotle salsa, poached eggs on a puff pastry, orange ginger scones are just some of the things we partook in during breakfast. The only thing that could have been improved on was the orange juice which was pulp-free and concentrate-y (it would have been great to have a Simply Orange Fresh Squeezed Variety). Overall the stay was fabulous and a great place to relax and get away from the big city (everyone who we enjoyed breakfast with was from DC). I highly recommend the FHH for a great weekend getaway.

Delicious 4 course breakfast!

wow, this place is incredible! I am so glad we decided to stay here after our dinner at the Inn at Little Washington. This was our first time staying at a B&B and we weren't sure what to expect, but after staying here, we will definitely be back! There is no cell phone service once you get into the immediate area, which is wonderful for a relaxing get away, but can pose an issue if you're relying on your cell for directions. Make sure you print out directions before you leave. If you're going to explore the area or need help leaving the area when your stay is over, don't worry because John & Diane thought of everything. They will print directions out for you if you need them - super thoughtful and a great touch. Also, they have a phone that you can use if you need to get in touch with family or friends during your stay. They have thought of everything which really is what makes this such a great place to stay. When we arrived, John greeted us at the door and gave us the tour. We had booked the Mary Ellen Jenkins room (the smallest room), but since they had a cancellation, we got to see the Garden Room as well and take our pick. While the Garden Room is beautiful and much larger, we decided to stay in the Mary Ellen Jenkins room since that is upstairs and the Garden room is on the first floor right off the foyer. Everything about this place is perfect; its so beautifully furnished. Even though our room was tight, there is room enough for a queen sized bed, chair, and a small vanity with a lighted make-up mirror. After a great night's sleep, we enjoyed John's 4 course breakfast which was so delicious! Although I read online about how amazing the scones are, they're even better than I thought. Everything was so good and Diane was really friendly as she served the courses. Overall, we had a great stay here and are looking forward to coming back to try their dinner with wine pairings!

The inn was festively decorated and exuberanted a warmth that was just so welcoming. The staff at the desk was mere incredibly kind. We were taken to our seats and Alejandro our waiter was fabulous the whole night. In fact I can't say enough great things about their staff overall. Catalina definitely made our evening enjoyable while introducing our food and taking our plates. Again everyone did such a fabulous job taking care of us. The FOOD was AMAZING! We ordered the traditional 5 course and each dish was just another challenge to the palate. The balance of flavors and tones. The creative plating. The play on traditional flavors with modern twist. I didn't want the surprise of each dish to stop. We were lucky and during our meal had Chef Patrick O'Connell check on us. We finished the night with a special tour of the kitchen. The highlight-- learning that they have a water sommelier! We didn't order anything but hearing him speak of the different kinds of water We will definitely be back to celebrate large and special milestones. Absolutely worth trying once in a lifetime.

The timing coincided with…read moreVirginia's state tourism office declining to pay a reported ~$360,000 fee to expand Michelin coverage into more of the state. Others see it as part of a wider "reset" affecting other longtime three-star spots like Alinea (Chicago) and Masa (New York), which also dropped to two stars at the same time. I'm not completely sure why the slight decline but here's my honest view. The scenic drive from DC through the Virginia countryside sounds breathtaking--rolling hills, charming small towns, glimpses of Blue Ridge Mountains but in actuality all of the turns and hills made myself and friend sick. We had to pull over and gather ourselves. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, filled with artwork, pink, green and gold monkey wallpaper and Victorian tables, and English country style. It's maximalist--opulent without being stuffy. Our waitstaff made the evening extra special for my birthday. They constantly wished me a happy birthday, asked thoughtful questions about my life, shared jokes, and engaged in small talk that felt genuine and personal. Not to mention the menu with my name. Each course on the 7-course tasting menu was beautifully presented. We loved having three menu options to choose from: a new seasonal tasting (always fresh and surprising), Enduring Classics (with signature dishes like the iconic lobster preparations or herb-crusted favorites), and a full vegetarian Good Earth menu with the eggplant course being our favorite. The unlimited warm bread service with fresh butter and flaky sea salt was a simple but perfect touch. The Champagne options were endless (their wine list is legendary, with a massive cellar and expert sommeliers), and they even offered a dedicated book/menu highlighting rare waters from around the world--everything from iceberg sources to unique mineral springs. I've never seen a water book before. Standouts for me was the caviar egg, lamb main course and tomato amuse-bouche. If you're looking for a special occasion spot (birthday, anniversary, or just because), this is it. Four people will run you around $2500 including drinks. Con- I would work on the cocktail menu (the Diana tasted like cough medicine). Bring back the pear dessert and portion sizes from 12 years ago. My main lamb portion was embarrassing. Reviewers see pictures for example sizes. Please offer a dedicated pescatarian menu. Overall, Chef Patrick O'Connell and his team did a great job.

It was one of those meals where you pause, smile, and truly savor every bite. Her attentiveness, warmth, and genuine care made our night feel even more special. She anticipated every need and added such a personal touch to the entire experience. Apparently, currently the only day of the week they offer Brunch is on Sundays. I showed up about 11:00 am. The place was full of diners - so instead of waiting for a table, I sat at the bar. It's not a large bar - I'd say it seats approximately 9-10 people. I ordered the Boudin balls - which come with a tasty dipping sauce called "Swamp Mustard." I also ordered the Cajun Omelette - which is stuffed with "smushed Boudin balls." Comes with a side of rather unexciting breakfast potatoes. The Boudin balls were tasty - and had a nice crispy texture. The Swamp Mustard is really good with the balls. The Cajun Omelette was rather ho-hum - I was expecting and hoping for something with more complexity and heat. The smushed Boudin balls were rather bland. The Omelette was cooked properly. I went here with my parents on Dec 3rd 2025 for their birthday dinner since they fall on subsequent days 2nd & 3rd, I got pics of the menu for the night & all food if necessary. $250 a person before-wine pairing, this place is a joke, 5 courses served in one sitting a night from 7pm -10pm, 3 wait staff the night I was there in addition to the chefs, su chef never leaves open kitchen just works on unflavored over priced bison all night, back to wait staff one gentleman, so soft spoken you cannot hear him over the music, 1 lady who is vegetarian and cannot answer questions about any meat or fish as she let us know, and another lady who didn't really help us but offered bread, To the service and menu: They offer cocktails after you sit, very limited liquor, no beers, wine if you order they will not bring until after they serve the sparkling wine to start the experience, for example we asked for wine list 7:05, didn't receive wine untill 7:45, Did not have the gin they told me they had after I ordered my drink, even though they only had 2 local va gins apparently, 1 somehow was out, Wait staff is socially awkward too, don't take a sip of your water if you don't want someone immediately up your you know what to refill to the point I had to say I'll let you know if I need more water And finally the food: 5 course fix menu, remember $250 for this robbery; 3 small off menu bites, 3/10 1st course: oysters with minimal caviar 4/10 basic 2nd course: caramleized sunchoke soup, advertised foie gras in the soup, nope apparently blended in, 6/10 3rd course: spaghetti alla chitarra w/beef cheeks, this dish is just cheeks, a spiral of undercooked too al dente pasta that they tried to hype but acting like cutting with steel makes it fire 5/10 4th course: new frontier bison bavette w/chorizo, oh boy this one sucked all the ass, bland, unseasoned & a weird chorizo in the middle that was soft with the consistency of pate 5th course dessert, you also get a small bignet off menu before this, it is as a ginger cake with 2 lame sauces, Look all I'm going to say is this place should legit be under investigation, they have no Michelin stars, no James beards, and they charging $250 a plate for legit scraps and not good ones, a small oyster, no foie gras, Bison!!! Go burn $200 and get a better meal anywhere, ambiance is nice music sucked

This isn't your casual night out. It's a full-on food adventure. You walk in and the vibe is already cozy and storybook-like. It's in this adorable little town near Old Rag Mountain (hello, perfect weekend getaway), and the restaurant used to be an actual blacksmith shop. They lean into the theme: your table has your name on it with a tiny anvil, there's a semi-open kitchen and wood-burning hearth, and the whole space feels warm and personal. The stars here are Sarah and Jake, the owners and chefs. They greet you themselves, chat with you like old friends, and then basically feed you a love letter disguised as a tasting menu. The food changes, but here's the vibe: * Little bites to kick things off (think three creative amuses that set the tone). * Dishes that pull from everywhere. One course might be an Asian-inspired dumpling in coconut broth, the next a perfectly refined European ravioli stuffed with fried chicken and veggies. * Wagyu beef cheeks that cook for 18 hours until they practically melt. * Bread service so good you'll be praying they bring more (they do). Every dish is beautifully plated and nothing is heavy or overdone. Everything just hits. Now, the wine pairing. They offer a regular and a reserve tier, and you can do half pours, which I highly recommend if you're driving back (we came from Arlington, about 1.5 hours). The wines themselves are incredible, from European classics to a killer ice wine from Washington State, and they match the food perfectly. A few heads-ups: * There's one seating per night. Everyone dines together, which makes it feel special and communal. * The cost is no joke. For two people with the reserve half pairings and one espresso, we spent around $300 per person. * They charge your card for the reservation ahead of time, then again for the meal and any drinks separately. * Service charge (22%) is already included, and they send you home with a cookie instead of a check (which, honestly, is iconic). We've been wanting to visit for about seven years but always hesitated because of the long drive. This year, we decided to go for it and booked a reservation in March for an October dinner, just to put the demand into perspective. By the end, we were full but not stuffed, a little buzzed, and very, very happy. It's the kind of meal that makes you want to slow down and savor life. Bonus tip: plan a hike or hit a winery while you're out there. Sperryville and the surrounding area are gorgeous. Five stars, no question. If you're celebrating something special or just want to treat yourself to an unforgettable meal, this is the place.

We stopped by at 11:30 for lunch on a Sunday in fall. We were told there was a 10-15 minute wait, but if we sat at the empty bar we would have to wait the same amount of time because food was behind. Not sure how that works but okay. They have a nice text system for their waitlist, so we used that. We waited in the back room, which had a few tables, a large stage, a pool table, and a jukebox. It was a fun vibe! Once we sat, we both got the cheeseburger- there's only one choice for a meat burger. It took a while to come out. The burger was pretty average. The server described it as a smash burger even though it didn't say that on the menu. The patties were a little thin, with standard toppings on a sesame seed bun. The fries were thin and nothing special. My friend called it a slightly upgraded McDonald's. Again, nothing bad but nothing special. I wouldn't come back, but there aren't many other options in Sperryville.

Great Find In Luray…read more Went hiking with my family in Shenandoah National Park this weekend and overnighted in Luray. We happened across The Chop House by mistake and a lucky one it was! Everything about the meal was fantastic! Our server Pete was terrific. My brother-in-law hit the nail on the head when he said "He was the most unpretentious, informative and friendly server I've run across". Very polite and helpful, you could just tell it made Pete happy to be helpful. The menu is not large, but the dishes we ordered were all top notch. First the Focaccia Bread came and it was just right, a good sigh of things to come. Next the Crab Dip. We are from Annapolis, a crab crazy town on the Chesapeake, where every restaurant has their own "award winning" crab dip, so we are very well acquainted with some of the best, but this one knocked it out of the park. It would win the "Best of Annapolis 2026" if this restaurant was in Annapolis. Next came the Sirloin, at Pete's recommendation. Salted perfectly, and cooked correctly to medium rare, with a side of asparagus cooked to crisp perfection and seasoned with a garlic butter that was just fantastic. We rapped it up with a flight of deserts to share, at Pete's recommendation. Deconstructed Cheese Cake, German Chocolate Cake, Creme Brûlée, and three of their house made ice creams. Again, just Wow. And when the bill came, again a very pleasant surprise. Steak dinner for 4, with cocktails and wine and the bill came to $250. Back in Annapolis that meal would have easily been $400 or more at Lunes Steakhouse, Ruth Chris or the Chart House. My wife and I agreed this meal was better than any we've had at any of these high end resturants. I can't recommend this place highly enough. We'll be back, and nothing against the other servers, but we'll make sure it's on a night Pete is working. Great job Pete and to everyone in the kitchen, just a terrific meal. Check in was a breeze and our host showed us everything in the room and made sure we could text her directly for anything. There is a clipboard on the wall that has reminders for everything too including Wi-Fi, happy hour, and checkin/out times. She also asked what time we wanted breakfast delivered to the room since that is a benefit of the cottage. There is parking guaranteed right next to the cottage and it seemed enough for two full-sized vehicles easily. Wi-fi worked great. We loved the wood stove. You don't need it for heating purposes but it was very nice and cozy to sit beside the fire. The cottage has a lot of windows to let in natural light which was enchanting in the morning. When you get there you'll realize the room faces the road but you need to worry as they have great privacy shades that also block any night light. The bathroom actually has a wall heater unit installed too. It was so nice stepping out from the shower into a very cozy bathroom space. We slept amazing. If you are a light sleeper you might consider traveling with a white noise machine or downloading an app for that. There isn't really much noise but the very rare car driving past. It was raining for our stay but there is a nice furnished side deck area that would be nice to eat breakfast on. There is snacks and drinks in the main house which is just a few feet from the cottage. They do also have happy hour where guests can mingle too. My husband and I are introverts so we stayed in but felt welcome to go. Overall it was a great stay and I highly recommend staying here.
