Very rude and poor service I ran the bell - the woman saw me did not acknowledge me after 1 minute a man openEd the door an blocked the entrance looked me up and down not once but 3 times . I wondered is he looking at my brown skin or my clothes My Nikes were worth more than all of his clothes and including the women's . (I am 50 years old and have a 6 figure salary ). He asks me , " can I help you" in a TONE as if to say I didn't belong . I said,"I want to inquire about Ebikes. " he says, " I can't help you with that right now" even though there was an ebike in the far window with a tag on it . My Catrike Road was in dire need of some TLC. I called up Fosters and was told I could bring it in that day. Less than 24 hours later it was done and I am blown away by how much better it is. Purchased a brand new Marin Kentfield 1 bike today. Unimpressed with the service. When we arrived home to test drive it we realized that the front disc brake was misaligned, tires deflated and installed bike stand ($30) rubs against the petals. Probably our fault for not test driving before leaving. We would not recommend this shop. read more

She has shoulder and neck problems and the owner and repair techs made it their mission to accommodate her needs by adjusting the handlebars and retrofitting the handlebar post right on the spot. I really, really want to like this place but boy do they make it difficult. I recently added up how much money I've needlessly spent at Foster's in the past twelve months due to their inattention and it's about $80. In addition to having to get a flat tire fixed twice as described in my first review, I'm also now having to replace a tire (and inner tube) that I JUST bought at Foster's a few weeks ago because when they reconnected the brakes, the pads were rubbing the tire. The worst was when I paid $10 for a nut. One nut. It rattled off my bike rack when I went over some rough roads and the whole rack was threatening to fall off, so I popped in hoping they would give or sell me a nut so I could make it home without losing any parts. I was ready to pay a couple bucks for it and certainly put it on myself. But, they took over and "installed" it, with some futzing. And then charged me a $10 minimum service fee. I would have just tied it up with a plastic bag if I had known. I sensed that the service guy wouldn't have charged me (so much) for it, but the owner was hovering and scowling at us the entire time. I just wish the owners would lay off and let this bike shop have the friendly, helpful culture that every other bike shop in Ottawa seems to have. read more

I normally don't write reviews, but having read all the really negative ones on here, I felt I needed to provide some perspective. Yes the older lady at the front really can be unfriendly at times - although other times she is really nice and the owner is bit gruff. But I have purchased several bikes here over the last 30 years I have been in Ottawa, and have always found them to be very reasonable. And I have had them do plenty of repairs over 30 years of commuting on various bikes, high end (Vanmoof) and low end (Norco) and have always found them to do good work, and explain what they are doing and why, and make recommendations on whether certain repairs are worth more expensive parts or not. I have used other shops in town and found them to be a) expensive and b) not having a clue on how to deal with my Vanmoof. For example I took it in thinking I needed new brake pads. They took a quick look - pads were fine - made two adjustments, showed me what they did and why, and charged me $10. Great service. read more

Upon entry expect to be ignored while you are awkwardly holding your bike until you can make some sort of eye contact with a snoby woman at the front who will unpolitely mumble that u can take your bike to the back of the store. Service guys are not that bad. Mini- tuneup was 50 dlls and flat tire was 16. Quite on the expensive side. I guess they can afford that given the convenient location. Bad quality of service, I would not recommend. They are more interested about your money than about fixing your bicycle. I first went there because my back wheel was bent. The guy offered me a general check up as well. When I got my bicycle back it still had dirty parts, but the back wheel was looking fine. That same week, when I went to ride it, the back tire went completely flat. I went back to your store to see what happened and I got the inner tire replaced. I was hoping not to get charged, as I wasn't having this problem before. However, as it could had been my fault, I didn't complain. After getting the new tire it happened again at the very same week. After sending them an email questioning whether I would get charged AGAIN, they answered in a very rude way, saying that the tire getting flat was my fault. I'll never go back to that place. read more

I brought in my bike for repairs after my back wheel and disk brake were stolen. Foster's provided a quote for "just shy of $300". When I collected my repaired bike the final price was $390. This is a significant difference. When I raised the issue with the store owner he was unapologetic, refused to adjust the price, and tried to explain the discrepancy by saying that it was hard to add up all the items on the spot when developing the quote. I've been a client at Foster's many times since 2016, as have my parents. I've also recommended this store to many friends and acquaintances. The bike mechanics are very good. However I've decided to stop bringing business to them as of now because of this interaction and others with the store owner. read more

Nice looking store, but has a LONG way in customer service. I've been to the store before to grab stuff for my bike. However, I went to the store yesterday because I was hoping they could help. The reason I went there was because my bike got stolen and I was asking whether or not my bike may have turned up. I made signs hoping they might keep an eye out and keep it on record. The guy couldn't care less. When I confronted him, he literally didn't show any eye contact and was too busy shelving product than listen to what I had to say. I get it, you have a business to run and you're busy but a little empathy couldn't hurt. He wouldn't help, take my poster on record, or offer suggestions other than post them on telephone polls. Zero customer support. The funny thing is I went to every bike shop I could find in Ottawa to ask for help and every single one of them helped with no hesitation. Not one of them turned me down, didn't care or shoved me aside. And thats the sad part. It clearly shows what their motivation is. Unless your talking money, they couldn't care less. I will say that one guy was the most helpful. I didn't catch his name but apparently it was his FIRST DAY! Its funny how the guy who has been there the less amount of time knows how to deal with customers. He was able to offer some help and I give a thumbs up to him. Overall though, this place needs to seriously work on their people skills. Plenty of bike stores were willing to lend a hand. This one didn't. If you want a store that cares, go somewhere else until they learn how to. read more

Please avoid! Terrible place, horrible customer service and unsafe. I had to get my brakes fixed again at a different location after getting my bike tuned here. If you have a "cheap" bike, don't even bother going here. Such a huge disappointment. I would highly recommend going to a different place - there are so many others in Centretown. I ride a bike almost everyday (from march to november) and I have built bikes up scratch. I would say I am more knowledgable than the average consumer of bicycles. Ive been in a few times over the past month, and didnt really have any problems. The older gentleman i spoke too on a couple occasions was really helpful. However, I went in one day and I needed an axle bolt. When i told the young guy what i needed, he told he would need to know the width and threading and that I would need to bring it in... fair enough. I wasnt sure of this off hand, but I described the brand, make, and type of hub I had. Under any circumstance with internet, if someone told me this I could look it up. At this point, I didnt feel I was getting the help I needed, and told him I would come back. Another, older employee, called me back and offered me some free nuts to try, but they were rusted. I was looking for new clean bolts, for my slick whip. I thanked him, but told him I was looking for something newer. It was a nice offer, and I think he only made it because he could tell his co-worker came off as a condescending dink. Lastly, the bike/part selection is not really geared (no pun intended) towards the higher end stuff, or specialty bike stuff. Maybe it is because it is winter. Would I return? No, Ive discovered more shops in ottawa that cater to my tastes. read more

Thank you for not listening to me and treating me like an idiot. My 8 year old son just learned to ride his bike with out training wheels four weeks ago, however the bike he had was too small. I explained all this to the salesperson, but he kept insisting that my kid needed an adult bike with hand breaks and gears. I told him no, and that we wanted a kids bike. He told me that was crazy and that a small adult bike was what we needed. I was ready to spend $300 on a kids bike and accessories that would have lasted a year or two and happily come back in a few years to get him set up on his next bike.However after being treated like an idiot and not being listened to, I will never go back. read more

My bike lock was stuck on my bike (both frozen because of the cold and rusty), and the Foster's staff was incredibly helpful. They went to my place to remove my old lock and did not charge me for their help. While they specialize in bike repair and services, they also have other sporting equipment in hunting, off-roading, and even martial arts. In fact, they have fairly extensive martial arts section. The prices are reasonable, the location is decent, and the service is outstanding. Not much more you can ask for from a sports store. read more

The worst bike shop in Ottawa. The staff is rude, incompetent, and not accountable. IF YOU HAVE A FLAT TIRE, DON'T GO TO THIS BIKE SHOP. They will only take your money out and give a terrible service in return. I got a flat tire and went to Foster's Sports Centre on Wednesday to fix it. They've changed my tube and said it was all good with the tire. I paid $15 for the change. However, after a short commute back home (5 minutes ride), my tire was flat again. I returned to the store on Thursday and they told me that it wasn't their mistake. By "coincidence" I got another nail stuck in my tire. I got suspicious but decided to trust the guy that it was just "bad luck" and spent another $15 to change the tube again. For my surprise when I went to check the bike on Friday morning, the same tire was flat! So clearly there was something abnormal with a flat tire three times in a row.. I took the bike back to the store this morning and the guy refused to accept that they committed a mistake. He argued that I must've ridden through another nail, but it was the same type of nail from the day before. Obviously they didn't do a great job in the day before, examining the tire thoroughly to take it out all the piece of metals. The workers didn't accept my point, argued, accused my boyfriend of having a "sour attitude" and were only willing to change the tube if we paid for the service again. I know that flats usually don't have a guarantee, but in this case was clearly their mistake and they should have repaired it for free. Not consumer-friendly at all. We left the store totally disappointed and we took the bike to Kunstadt (further South on Bank) and right away the attendant there noticed that there were multiple pieces of metal inside my tire.. Meaning: my tires only got flat again because the guy from Foster's Sports Centre didn't do a good job in the first place. In conclusion, I lost $30 and three days of this week running around do fix my tire. read more

Foster's has been a place that I have shopped at since I was a kid. OK, my parents shopped there when I was a kid and then I continued the tradition. lol From skates to weights to bicycles I have always had a great experience at Foster's Sports. The staff (that I should know by name but sadly don't) have always been knowledgeable and friendly. Always offer advice freely without making you feel that you are taking up their time. Bike repairs and maintenance are done fairly quickly though they are always busy during the summer. And, of course, prices are fair for the work and/or product. read more

i had a terrible experience at the store. the owner was not keen on selling me one. i went into the store initially asking for a bike. i said my budget is $500, the owner said the cheapest one we have would be around $650ish. i agreed to go inside and the salesman shows me a bike, but now the cheapest one is all of a sudden for $1500. when i asked for the one for $650 one, they say there isnt one. both salesman and owner seemed blank and dismissed the fact that the owner said there is one for 650. finally, i agree to buy a bike (regardless of price) that i like; but no one knew the price of that bike (owner and the salesman). the owner tells me " the person who puts the price on them will be in on monday, and if i am serious about buying a bike, they will hold it for me."... firstly, i am shocked to see the owner of the store not knowing the price of her own product. secondly, there is a man standing in your store with $1000 in his pocket willing to buy a bike, and you don't have a bike or even a price of the bike? most importantly, the statement that "if i am serious about buying a bike" is that even a joke? both the owner and salesman were cold and shrugging me off throughout my time there. i don't know if it was my skin colour or ethnicity; but they did not have a bike for me, despite the fact that they had quite a few bikes parked in their store; and i had said price is not a consideration. although i had asked them to keep the bike on hold till monday so they can take time to figure out the price of their own product, i went back and told them to not put it on hold as they were not keen on selling it to me in the first place i would not recommend this store to anyone. read more

I've bought one bike at Fosters and have got in for service and parts on a handful of occasions. Customer service has ranged from really attentive and great to dismal. On one occasion I walked out when I wasn't being helped. This being said, they carry very good quality bikes for a reasonable price, including 2 yrs or service. As I'm looking to buy my second bike there, they have been very helpful in helping me choose which bike is best for me. In summary, It's a great place to buy a bike if you're looking for a quality bike at the $600-1200 range, but customer service lacks if you're coming in to ask questions or get small service done. read more

Went in today to get some supplies for the bike, so I cannot speak to the bike service at Foster's. Foster's has a wide range of bikes and bike supplies and the prices appear to be very reasonable. The staff don't appear to be overly friendly, but I did not get the impression they were rude. That's not to dismiss what other people experienced of course, but I luckily didn't experience the same poor service. The person who helped me answered all of my questions and gave me some good suggestions. DO NOT purchase a bike from Fosters. The owner of this bike shop is INCOMPETENT and DISHONEST. I went in at the beginning of the season to buy a new road bike. I am 5'4'' tall. The owner fit me on a 56cm Cube NuRoad bike (size L). At the time I told him I felt quite stretched out but he said I "had to get used to it" and that he would rotate the handle bars up so I could reach the gears until I "got used to the fit". I tried a smaller bike in the store but he said I looked too crammed and strongly recommended the 56cm frame. I trusted his judgement (I have never owned a road bike before) and purchased the bike for $1500.00, total purchase $2198.98 with accessories. I rode the bike 5 times and began having intense neck pain. I did some research and figured out the correct size of frame for my height was 48-52cm (size XS/S). I went back and the owner refused to rectify the situation. He refused to acknowledge the frame was at least TWO SIZES too large for me. He told me he would order in a smaller stem to lessen the reach. He subsequently accused me of "landing in on him" when I returned back to the store and he didn't have the part (after he had left a voicemail saying the part was in). He then tried to replace the stem on my 56cm frame with a stem off a children's Cube bike because it would "cost too much" to order in the appropriate stem. The interaction ended with him yelling that he didn't care if I wrote a review online because his reputation was already set. I have subsequently been to several other bike shops in Ottawa that have all recommended I write reviews online to warn other customers. I am also reporting this incident to the Better Business Bureau. I cannot believe how incompetent the owner was at fitting this bike, but furthermore, how unprofessional he was in refusing to fix this very obvious mistake. He clearly cares more about making money than quality service. DO NOT spend your money at this establishment. read more

This store has amazing products but the customer service is AWFUL. Do not go there unless you have no other option. A friend of mine had her bike parked just outside the store and when she came to unlock it, the key broke inside the lock. She asked if they could break the lock and they told her it would be a 90$ fee. After a long conversation, the manager brought it down to 20$ but it was difficult and very unpleasant. The manager couldn't care less about her situation and wasn't bothered by robbing her of 90$ for cutting the lock, which was a 20 second long operation. Let me remind you that THE BIKE WAS JUST OUTSIDE THE STORE. The young employee working at the time clearly felt bad for her and looked ashamed of the manager's attitude. I myself brought the store on two occasions over 1,700$ worth of business and they wouldn't even give me the bell bike for free. Not that I asked but I still think that it was bad business. Anyway, avoid this store and get your products online or in the Glebe. read more

I started biking regularly last summer in Ottawa and have had nothing but great service from Foster's. They've outfitted my new bike (9 months old - so cute and pink!), with a basket, raised my seat and done some magic on my gears and brakes. Occasionally they've even done me some favours! I have been to Fosters twice in the last 3 years that I have lived in Ottawa and both times the people who I asked for help with my bike were complete bike snobs. The first time I went there was shortly after I bought a used bike off of Kijiji. The bike wasn't an expensive bike it was just something to get me from point A to B. I have had bikes stolen a few times so I just didn't want to spend a ton of money on a bike because if it gets stolen I lose lots of money as well as my bike. I went in to Fosters to ask about having the callipars replaced because the ones on my bike were old and made of plastic. The guy reluctantly showed me a set that were over a hundred dollars so I asked if there was anything cheaper and he said. "We only have parts for bikes that cost over 500 dollars; so maybe you should just bring your bike back to Canadian Tire and get them to have a look at it." I was floored! I couldn't believe he said that to me. I left and took my bike to Peccos on Murry St. They were very friendly and not judgemental about the cost of my bike or how old and heavy it was. They fixed it up for me. The guys at Peccos were friendly and polite. The other time I went to Fosters was with the same bike. I only went there because I was at work on Lisgar and Fostesr was the closest place I could go to. Someone had hit my bike with their car. The frame holding the back tire was a bit bent and when I was riding it to work in the morning the tire was rubbing into the frame. It was pretty awful and upsetting to get on my bike that morning and realize that it was damaged pretty badly. So with a little optimism I walked it to Fosters and brought it inside and asked if there was anything they could do to hel[p me. The two guys working there looked at it and said there was nothing they could do; the bike was a write off and they didn't even touch it or really look at it. I was so upset i was on the verge of tears when I left. So after work I brought my bike to Peccos again. The guys working there rememberd me and my bike. I told them of both my experiences at Fosters and they totally got where I was coming from. They said they couldn't do anything to take the bend out of the frame because it would compromise the safety of the bike. They did say that they could re-adjust the back tire/ wheel, and fix the spokes so I could still ride it and use it. They fixed it, I've been riding it for over a year with no problems. I am now looking to buy a better bike because I love biking on the trails here in Ottawa. I'm planning on spending more money for a better bike. I most definitely will not be spending any money at Fosters. read more

With a few noteable exceptions, I've had bad to fair experiences with bike shops around Ottawa, mostly due to the surprising attitude that seems to say "we don't REALLY want your business - well okay, if you insist". So I'm happy to be able to write a very positive review. I commute to downtown and got a flat this week on my way in. Because Foster's is the closest bike shop I called them from work and was told they would repair it while I waited and it would only take about 5 minutes. I've heard promises of great service like that from businesses before and let's just say I wasn't terribly confident they would come through. Anyway, when I stopped in after work, Tim immediatly took my bike and fixed it - within 5 minutes. Then, without my asking I watched as he adjusted my other brake and tire pressure and oiled my chain. The most pleasant thing was he didn't make negative comments about these things when he noticed they needed attention. He just did it. Then I asked him about the trouble I was having with one of the hand grips. He just fixed it. No condensending comment about what I did wrong installing it . They only charged me for reparing the flat tire. He seemed genuinely committed to making sure my bike was safe and rode smoothly. Based on my experience, this guy really knows what he's doing and goes the extra distance to give great service. read more

Disappointing first visit. It was a shock to see how the lady behind the front counter talked to the staff working. Made it for a very uncomfortable first visit. I was looking for a simple tire. No big deal, they had to order it for me, that is fine.. it is an odd size. However.. I had to ask them what was needed from me in order for them to order. That's when the cash register opened up. So I paid for my item up front. I was told the order would be placed the next day and to expect a call. I waited 2 days and called back. This is when I was told that the order required a minimum in order to be processed and it was just processed yesterday. This was not told to me at the time of purchase, If anything I was told what I wanted to hear so I would make the purchase. Once that item arrives and everything is squared away, I will not be returning or recommending this shop to anyone. Reading other reviews. I am a regular commuter cyclist and that includes in Ottawa's winter. Thank you, transit strike of 2008-2009 for introducing me to that desperation. I also happen to be female and moderately knowledgeable about bike maintenance and repair. What all this is leading up to is that I refuse to give money to businesses that can't come to terms with the above facts. I've have some pretty negative bike store experiences in Ottawa, including guys switching from gear talk to dumbed down "girl friendly" language and making statements like "that installation is pretty good...for a girl!" Seriously. For that reason, I haven't gone anywhere but Fosters in about 3 years. The owners and staff are knowledgeable, respectful and have never pushed me to spend more. In fact, I've been told that a cheaper products will do, had quick tuneups done gratis, and even been chased down the street when I left a purchase in store. Despite all this talk about being strong and tough, I do ride an old-fashioned Dutch granny bike that Foster's ordered and assembled from a non-local distributor for no extra cost when they didn't have what I wanted in stock. They also offer a year's maintenance on bike purchased in store at no extra cost, which they honoured by working on a fairly tricky hub repair for my pricey foreign bike. This is not the place to go if you want the cheapest bike possible, but you will get advice and service far beyond cheaper sports-mart type places. I almost deducted a star for once being lectured for riding my new bike all winter, despite the fact that winter riding was the reason I chose a steel bike with coaster brakes. It is actually sound advice, so fine, 5 stars it is. read more

Just a very bad experience with the store. I had to buy the bike and the saddle from them, because no one else had them in stock. I decided to try it out before buying. I know these are not big problems, but this is not what I expected form a store: 1. I was looking for 54-56 frame, because I know this is my side. I was told 10 times to to buy other ones, because they are proper for me, even tough I do feel it completely not comfortable. 2. During my test tide, the brakes were squeaky and the front shifter was not properly installed. They told to me they will prepare the bike before the purchase, but they did not. It took me 3 min to fix it myself, but that's not right when I buy a new bike from a store. 3. I bought the brooks saddle and followed all the maintenance they told me. It become very soft, so I feel the metal rails on all the bumps. I tried tightening (about 10 turns!), but it did not help. when I visited the store, they said they need to contact Brooks. After a few weeks no one called me back, I decided to call myself. I was told exactly "There is nothing we can do" for all my questions. The bike is fine, but the saddle is useless for $180, which they do not want to take back. This is not how the bike store should work. Basically, it's even worse than buying online. I knew the bike size I needed, so I could just go with it. read more

I've had good experiences in the past. For my last visit, though, I brought in a bike light that I'd purchased just recently. After initially denying that it could be possible that I'd bought it there, I spoke with the employee who actually sold it to me, who confirmed that, yes, I had bought it there. Even though I had bought the light there just weeks ago, they just shrugged at the fact that it didn't work. They told me to buy a new one. I get that sometimes things just break, but I feel like the right thing to do would have been to at least offer me a discount or something. And the whole initial thing about how I couldn't have bought it there was bizarre. read more

Was done...but light was not even tightened as it almost fell off riding it home and my fenders rattled as they were not tightened...had to adjust wheel as it was off balance...Quality of repair poor...and attitude rushed and indifferent. Awful customer service. Every time I've been in to grab something I've always felt like I was inconveniencing the staff. Most recently went in to get a key cut and the person gave me a hard time when I asked her to get all the jagged metal off the freshly cut key. Even after getting her to go back to the grinder three times it was barely passable and I gave up asking. Seriously comically bad customer service at this place. Go elsewhere, plenty of other good bike stores in this town, I will only visit this place for something small and if I'm pressed for time. read more

I've come in this shop many times and not once have I felt like i have received good service. Prices are astronomical, some staff are very shady and condescending, and the only thing they have going for them is their convenient location to locals in the area. For example, I work on bikes in my garage, and sometimes need to go grab a few new parts. I walk in the store, and first thing I get is a dirty look because I'm wearing a dirty shirt that I work in. Clearly they judged me and knew I most likely wasn't going to spend big bucks on one of their bikes. I had asked for a part for one of my bikes (a cotter pin to be exact) and asked if I could make sure it fitted before purchasing. They took my crank that I brought to see if the pin fit, and once they found a fitting pin, they charged me cost plus 20 bucks labour! I was extremely frustrated and disappointed that I will never return no matter what I need. I had a Garneau bike I purchased in Toronto several years ago and have since moved to Ottawa. About a month ago the bike frame broke but Garneau to their great credit replaced the bike so I went to Fosters simply to ship my old bike to Garneau in Quebec and then receive my new bike. The girl working there made a great fuss about having to do it even though they sell Garneau kids bikes. She must own the business as she is terrible dealing with customers and told me she was charging me $65 to put the bike together and $35 for shipping, total $100. Garneau shipped the new bike at their expense. I found it all reasonable. It took Fosters a week to send it out. Went in to pick it up and she doubled the charge on me and the pedals were not on, no one called to tell me it was ready, I called them. So I paid the $214 and she had the audacity to ask if I needed to buy anything else. She kept referring to how nice the replacement bike was as if she had something to do with it. I hate shopping on bank street, it's smells like a cheap head shop and the business owners entrap you when they can like this. I'll never set foot in the place again and I spend a lot of money on bikes. Any other bike shops folks, this one is a dud. read more
