The contemporary site is a visitor center and is otherwise largely rolling hills surrounded by farms. Some trails were in evidence, some a tad overgrown and I steered clear of those due to tick concerns. But you can certainly have a nice time here getting in both some history and some nature.

Robert E. Lee's army was retreating from the Richmond to the Petersburg line. Here, on April 6, 1865, Union General Philip Sheridan cut off and beat back about a 1/4th of Lee's army. Eight Confederate generals surrendered, and 7,700 men were lost. Confederate Major General George Washington Custis Lee, eldest son of Robert E. Lee, was forcibly captured on the battlefield. This was the last major engagement in Virginia; Lee's surrender at Appomattox occurred 3 days later. The Hillsman House, which was owned by Capt. James Hillsman, served as a hospital for both Confederate and Union troops. Bloodstains still remain on the floor. The land was originally named in the 18th century for a farmer named Saylor. During the Civil War, the name was changed to Sayler. Some official records called it Sailor, which is what the Commonwealth of Virginia uses in its name for the related park.

She acted as though our presence was so annoying particularly as we had the Groupon. I'm not sure why a business would use Groupon if they are going to treat business coming from Groupon so rudely. Her behavior was exceptionally off putting.

The path that I walked along was close to the Airbnb house that I rented for the weekend. It was a hot summer day but I enjoyed my walk next to beautiful homes. The river water that I saw was brown and not blue. I also noticed some murky and dirty parts but this river isn't necessarily for swimming (although people do swim in the river). I noticed a canoe or kayak at the Huguenot Flatwater so it appears that a lot of locals take part in kayaking. During my walk, I reached the Huguenot Flatwater section of the river which is named for the French Protestant refugees who settled there about 10 miles upstream. Since I walked along homes, there were lots of trees on the sides. I highly recommend that you bring a hat if you go during the summer months. I didn't bring a hat but I walked in the morning so the temperature hadn't reached the max temperature for the day (it was still hot though). It's a nice visit. They asked me about my experience and offered me a deal if I was interested in more classes but I didn't feel pressured at all. I love the amount of natural light in the studios. Because of the decals on the windows you don't feel like you're in a fishbowl being watched as people pass by. If you're looking for a good workout in a welcoming environment, give this place a try.

I was shooting mid to low 80s pretty consistently before meeting with him and now I am into the high 70's low 80's after a few months of adjusting to changes. Our lessons were more focused on swing mechanics and specific shot types. The 6 hole course is a great time if you only have a half hour or if you are teaching someone new to the game.

Great for the short game (no driver needed here). I never took anything less than an 8 iron out of my bag! Highly recommend!
