I drove into a rather large parking area with about 7 cars there. Sometimes it makes me feel good to hike knowing I'm not the only one wandering around in the mountains. This however was a beautiful trail through a gorge! Total opposite of what I usually hike. I was excited once I passed the signage about a quarter mile in. Always makes me feel good when things are aligned. Notes said there would be 5 river crossings. Every step of this hike was amazing! Crossing the river and butterflies and a bit of rock scambles was amazing. And it wasnt strenuous at all. Never once! The falls were beautiful. (Apparently the kids Cliffs jump there) The trail follows the river the whole way. I can't describe how relaxing and wonderful this hike is. Luckily for me, I was near the parking area on my return, when an entire pack of people arrived to hike as well. Im glad I found it. Its not too far from Crabtree Falls. Its probably part of the same River System. I'll tell though, I've hiked Crabtree 2 times and Saint Mary's Falls/Saint Mary's Wilderness is 120% more enjoyable. Go hike it!

Pull up to the clubhouse, someone takes your clubs, cleans and loads them onto the cart for you. Unless you prefer to take a caddie which is available. The clubhouse is an old stone 2-story building. With locker room up stairs, dining room with full services and a men's only room for dining and cigars. No hats allowed inside. The course is in pristine condition. Not a single hole is the same. Not a bad lie on the course with generous size greens but very fast that roll true. A "must play" course if you know a member or someone that can get you on. If you're a golf enthusiast, seek this course out.

The Malvern Hill Battlefield…read more The government shutdown blocked us from attending Petersburg National Park/Civil War Sites but Malvern Hill is owned by a private charitable trust. American Civil War 1861-65. This was the last of the Seven Days' Battles, which all came about from the Peninsular Campaign in which the Union, led by General McClellan, attempted to march toward Richmond to take the Confederate capital. Newsflash. It didn't work out for the Union. Most of the real battles were Union defeats and eventually the Union pulled back and Malvern Hill, with the Union gunboats and hill giving them an advantage. They had to win this or risk likely annihilation/capture. They won it. The Seven Days' Battles made or broke the fame of several leaders and even a brigade. The Irish Brigade made a big name for itself at Malvern. Overall, Robert E. Lee stood out for the first time and would go on to become a legend. Conversely, the Union would begin to doubt General McClellan and on the Confederacy a promising General Magruder was banished to a distant post for angering General Lee. Lesser-known soldier tales: Allegedly a sergeant from the Irish Brigade shot a Confederate officer and later found out it was his son. Likely a false but stirring story put together by a newspaper from the period. A lad of 17 named Phil Edwin Jemison took a cannon hit and died with an elite legacy. His photo made the front magazine page of And an unknown general with great promise, General Charles Sidney Winder, who rallied together five cobbled regiments and personally led them at an earlier battle of the Seven Days Battles. He died at the Battle of Cedar Mountain 39 days later. A novel about the Battle of Cedar Mountain followed by a movie made the place better known - Cold Mountain.

If you just like parks, there is plenty of parking and a path to walk along as well. It may not take up a lot of time, but it's still great this battlefield was preserved. The signage referred to a visitor center, but when we went to it there was some other establishment at that address. So it's just a park but a nice park.

Year-round I personally recommend the 17th Street Farmers' Market, one of the oldest in the country, the Capital Trail, The Boathouse seafood restaurant, and the Virginia Holocaust Museum.

This is one of the nicest semi private courses in a 20 miles radius of downtown Richmond. Tee boxes are great, stripped fairways, what seems to be anti divot greens which have been pristine at my last two outings. The course has some great elevation change through out it. Which makes it challenging, but it's not that bad. Pro shop is super nice, and the service has always been excellent. Today they had a range officer cruising the course making sure pace of play was good. Nice fellow named Henry. Range officer wasn't there the first time I played, but didn't matter. Drink cart came around at least 4 times. There wasn't a drink cart making the rounds last time we went though. There's a grass range, a huge putting green, and a chipping green all in the same area. Their carts are a little slow. That's my only single complaint, but I don't blame them. There's some steep hills around the course and I could see how a fast cart might cause problems. Definitely returning customer.

Of the traditional (aka Bikram) yoga studios I've practiced with over the years, Hot Yoga Richmond…read moreis hands-down the very best. Here's the scoop: 1. Multiple instructors, all of whom are excellent teachers and true to the 26-and-2 dialog/script during the yoga classes. All are experienced, attentive, and clearly happy to be teaching. All bring their unique focus and vibe, so class always feels fresh. 2. Studio is bright and clean. Temperature and humidity are maintained at the recommended temps for both the hot yoga and the other classes (e.g., hot Pilates, Sunday evening yin/Nidra). The heating system is relatively quiet, and the air is gentle--doesn't blow/blast on you like heaters at some studios. Parking is free and plentiful. 3. Showers are clean and well stocked with body wash, shampoo, conditioner. 4. Students include a diverse range of body shapes, fitness levels, ages, genders, and ethnicities. Everyone can feel comfortable and welcome. I think this is important to mention because I (60+f) have felt a little out of place in a couple of other studios where everyone was overwhelmingly young, fit, female, and white. Lots of different people here and all friendly and welcoming. 5. Studio is committed to the original 26-and-2 postures (traditional Bikram Yoga) in the hot yoga classes--important for those of us who have personally experienced the healing of this particular sequence/practice. They also offer Hot Pilates and a few other classes, and those classes are also top-notch. (Try the monthly Sound Bath) 6. Supportive studio. All the instructors recognize and reiterate the importance of coordinating breath and body. Also, there's never pressure to go deeper into postures than is safe. Instructors regularly remind students to breathe calmly and attentively. They also do a great job of re-emphasizing the need to listen and heed the instructions for a safe practice. As Victor (teacher and co-owner) regularly points out, "Yoga is a practice, not a performance." 7. Cost is reasonable, especially if you can manage to pay for a year of unlimited yoga up front, but even the packages are quite reasonable if you practice 2-3 times/week. 8. Healing. Many practioners of this particular 26-and-2 yoga will attest to its incredible healing and healthfulness. In a 90-minute class, the postures (including breathing) and the heat work together to develop strength and balance, provide aerobic work, and target common problem areas such as digestive and spine/back. , far more than just a great workout--it's also self-physical therapy and amental/psychological practice. 9. Since most of the above comments are focused on the Bikram yoga, I'll add that their Hot Pilates classes will kick your hiney (in the best way). The music varies every time, and the specific exercises also change up, which is nice. These classes work really well for me to develop more strength which in turns gives me a stronger yoga practice, especially in the yoga balancing postures. In summary, Hot Yoga Richmond is a 10-star studio, and it's the perfect place to heal if you need healing or get/stay strong and flexible no matter who you are or where you are on your journey.
