Our experience started with the booking. My mom called and explained to the host that she was looking to come up in the next few weeks with her father, a 99 year old man, and herself, battling cancer. She asked the cancellation policy because things could change depending on health. The host said that she would "work with her", my mom asked if she wanted her to send a deposit, and if so how much. The host said you can either send a check or pay cash on arrival (she didn't take credit cards). My mom, thinking 'ok this is a pretty flexible lady', decided to send her a check for the full amount. About a day and a half before hand my mom got diagnosed with shingles and was in too much pain to make the 6 hour drive, she had rented two cabins. We called to let the host know that they wouldn't be making it but we were planning to be there. She said she hadn't gotten the check yet, we said we could pay cash for our cabin. I told my mom the check was never received and my mom cancelled the check. My fiancé and I expected to pay some type of cancelation fee but upon arrival the host tried to charge us full price, and if she rented the cabin, would then credit us that amount. Mind you - not give us anything back towards the balance, just credit on future use, So we would have to spend more money to get any value out of her "working with us". At the end of the day we gave her our full amount for the cabin and 50% of the unused cabin cash. The host proceeds to rent the other cabin for one of the nights we were there for 2/3rds of what she charged us per night, then say that only half of that would go towards our balance because of the cleaning fee.... so not only did she give the other renters a better deal per night but then tried to charge us to clean their cabin. This woman was the worst business owner I have ever interacted with, completely unreasonable, and flat out a lier. At one point as she was explaining to us why she couldn't do anything towards the charge, she said she was a single mother of 3 kids... then later she said a single mother of 2 kids... I am sorry but that doesn't dictate your cancellation policy. Needless to say I won't be going back and I will never recommend staying here to anyone. us". Originally, and the reason we went up there to begin with and didn't just outright cancel was because she said she would credit for another time and give us an extra night off season, which we had misunderstood to be the 3 nights plus one during off peak when rooms were cheaper and harder to fill. But no, she just meant one night, period, off peak. Now this brings us to another interesting point - she told us we cancelled too late for her to give us anything off the balance, yet when we called to cancel she hadn't even received the check yet... Ummm ... then when we got there, after I told her we were paying for our own cabin cash (on the phone 2 days earlier), she goes to deposit the check anyways. Needless to say I won't be back, and I recommend you look elsewhere. read more
