Having read multiple reviews complaining about the air conditioners, I brought a noise cancelling machine, but the air conditioner was still VERY loud (high pitch chirping/rattling) and musty smelling. I was finally able to dull the sound, so I figured no need to bother the front desk in the middle of the night. On the second night the smoke detector would randomly go off every hour/half hour. In the middle of the night I called the front desk and a very pleasant employee brought me a battery. Mind you I was half asleep and had to stand on a chair with wheels to reach the smoke detector (I know, not safe), but I was desperate. Unfortunately, even with the new battery, the smoke alarm continued to go off . The next morning I informed the very nice front desk worker, and she had maintenance fix it. She informed me that she spoke with her manager and they would be able to comp my room for that night, but they had to figure out how to do this because I had booked through Expedia. However, Expedia informed me that this was a lie, because I paid at the property, not through Expedia. Now I have to go through my bank to dispute the charge. This hotel is definitely not worth all this hassle.

The hotel was dog friendly, clean, comfortable, and well-kept. The free breakfast was better than expected and gave us a good start each morning. Our room faced South Bay of Lake Superior, which made for a beautiful view -- especially at sunset (though you'll need a little patience, since the sun doesn't set until after 10 PM in the summer!). The location was convenient with lots of great activities nearby, making it easy to explore the area without driving too far. Overall, this hotel added comfort and relaxation to an adventurous trip. The location is good just a mile into town and a short drive to the western sights of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park. The room was decent nothing fancy except for the nice balcony looking out to the lake. Unfortunately the strong north wind and cold front limited our ability to sit outside except for a short bit. Welcome to Lake Superior at the very end of May! The breakfast room was super tiny for such a big place and on a Sunday morning it was cramped and hard to move around. Overall it worked for us.

And we were barely in the room at all. Just showered and slept, as Munising is all about being outside. The rest of the motel grounds are super chill, with plenty of space to spread out outside, a cool dog, and interesting folks to chat with. The best part is that it's walking distance, a couple blocks, to the brew pubs and such in downtown Munising, so was the perfect location. This place is a legend amongst those who make the voyage to Munising, Michigan year after year for the variety of outdoor sites and activities. After being under the same ownership for decades, suffering a fire, and being purchased by a lovely couple on a mission - Scotty's is being given some much needed TLC and returned to it's former glory. Although some elements of this 50s/60s time capsule are being removed (think old carpet, crumbling plaster) the staples that bring the old school vintage charm are being protected, salvaged and honored by Tom, his wife, and their handsome little Bull Terrier. The owners are fabulous hosts, one of the best features of a motel vs a hotel - you make friends! They had an extra key for us, extra towels and an extra mini-fridge waiting for us based on the length of our stay and the fact that many restaurants are closed this time of year. We were offered an outdoor fire ring as well as access to a little greenhouse for a BOYB Happy Hour which was INCREDIBLE. We stayed up late playing board games and enjoyed the layout and space of the motel generally. The rooms have been given some serious love (still in progress for some rooms). The renovated rooms are CLEAN, SAFE, well-stocked with the necessities, and extremely comfortable. There will be no other place we stay in Munising. Scotty's or BUST. We preferred staying here and supporting local business over some cold, impersonal big box chain motel (which probably wouldn't have been any better in service or quality) The rooms were simple but super clean.. sparkling clean bathrooms, clean soft cotton sheets and comforters (not those icky polyester comforter covers) and a nice TV with all the stations we needed. We liked sitting outside on our own chairs at night.. and enjoyed the fire pit on the lawn! The morning was bright and crisp, and only 5 minutes down the road there's a coffee shop with delicious bagels, Bay Furnace Bagel Works. We brought our bagels home to motel and enjoyed them as we got ready for a big day of adventure in the UP. I was traveling 9 months pregnant and left my sacred most loved pregnancy support pillow in the bed (hidden in the covers) and the owner was nice enough to offer to ship it to our home!!! They are SO NICE here! We will definitely be returning! We loved staying here!

However, this campground has a lot of potential to be a great place to stay while visiting the area. The campground is located just outside of Munising, and is close to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The sites are large and level, with full hookups and included free wifi. The staff was friendly and helpful. Also, at $35 per night, it's one of the most affordable options in the area. There are some minor issues (mostly related to them being brand new). There is no playground or play area for kids. There really is no shade to speak of (hopefully they will plant some trees around the sites). The bathrooms are a bit small for the capacity of the campground with only a few stalls and a few showers (this will only be an issue when the campground is at full capacity). Overall I was pleased with our stay here. The issues we saw were minor and can be corrected easily. I would gladly stay here again while visiting the area.
