Having never been to a tea room, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I was thinking garden party, so my companions and I dressed for the garden--in florals. The place: Dimly lit, so you may need to get creative reading the menus. There were maybe half a dozen small tables in the back area of the shop with tablecloths and centerpieces to set the mood. Along the walls are hooks which provide a home for hats. In fact, there are enough hats that there's a collection on a short wall separating part of the seating area. In addition to the hat collection, there's also a collection of tea sets as decor. The food (and tea): I've only seen a tea menu this long in one other place. The variety is splendid and offers so much variation that it's difficult to choose if you're an adventuresome tea drinker who wants to try it all. I settled on After Dark Chai, and it changed my mind about drinking only chai lattes. Clearly I've been drink the wrong chai before this. The food was, in a word, dainty. I definitely felt like I was at a tea party when finger sandwiches and tiny scones came out on tiered trays. The sandwiches and baked goods were fabulous, the Mac and cheese was a little underwhelming. The service: Delightful and personable. I appreciated the breakdown of what was on each tea tray, the explanation of what to eat first. Especially if we wanted to eat the scones while they were warm! Next time: I might just go for tea and scones. As other reviewers have mentioned, it's a little pricey, but for a leisurely afternoon spent sipping tea and chatting with friends, it was well worth it. read more

The perfect place for two, we shared a wonderful and very well-crafted lunch in an intimate setting. The food was spectacular, smaller portions but we ordered the tea for two which came with 4 courses essentially- scones, sandwiches, cakes and desserts. Along with our delicious entrees and a side of soup. It was more than enough food for the two of us. We will be returning again and again. I love it here, the Owners are great people and they live in my hometown. They have great food and they always remember me. When I come here I like to take my time and absorb the atmosphere. If you have more than 3 people you'll want to call ahead. They have amble seating, seating is more for intimate twosomes or threesomes. The quiche was nice and creamy, the soups were tasty, and the 3 tier service...oh my goodness, so fantastic, I can't even describe, except to tell you to just get it!! This is a special, charming restaurant and should be a gem I keep going back to. The problem? Their food items keep shrinking! My friend and I paid over $16 each for tea, quiche and soup. The quiche came in a tiny pot less than 2 inches in diameter and 2 inches high: about 2 bites. The soup was served in a bowl that could barely fit the spoon! We left hungry. I have been here before and the lunch food is definitely shrinking. I understand that times are hard and prices are high but this was beyond stingy. And the food is very good, but it really was like samples sizes that should be given away for free. Please either raise the prices and give us more substantial fare or....? read more

The Tea Room is a wonderful place to bring a friend who's visiting in town, or to visit if you're from out of town. The tea for two is always a treat - you get two pots of tea (I always got the hot chocolate because I'm a sucker for a good chocolaty drink), two quiches or cups of soup, a large platter of finger sandwiches, and an assortment of pastries. It is heavenly but an afternoon tea is not something you want to rush, so avoid the Tea Room if you've got things to do. Also, last time I was there it was about $25 for two people and not a huge amount of food, so it's a little pricey for Houghton, but still a good deal. If you're looking for a gift for a friend, they have greeting cards and little trinkets in the front room. They also have a ridiculous array of old lady hats scattered about the place that you can wear while you're eating to feel like a real ass (or an English twit sipping tea). read more

Been here before, wasn't a great experience (and had done a less than stellar review) but reading all reviews decided to go back and very glad! What a gem! Tucked into a historic building in downtown, decor is cozy yet celebrates the history of the are. Service excellent, fast but not obnoxious. Food was wonderful, tea was fantastic! I did the quiche with soup, perfect portions and delicious. Dining buddy had the croissant sandwich and soup, nothing left on her plate when she was done either. Split a tray of mini scones for dessert with clotted cream and lemon curd, wanted to lick the dishes when I was done. Fantastic selection of teas, black, green and herbal. I did a ginger infused green and it was perfect. Will be back! read more

The Tea Room is a personal favorite. High tea in the middle of the UP! Sign me up. You are not at the Claridges, of course, but the Tea Room is an adorable place with excellent lunch selections. I find their soups and quiche combination great value for money. Tasty and right portion size. My son loves their tuna sandwich which has horseradish in it. If you go to the tea room your are going to definitely be paying for the ambiance because a two year old could make a better tea sandwich. Not to mention, they tasted old. Not only is the food and tea lack luster, the staff is extremely rude and unhelpful. Our server seemed like she had about 100 better things to do like text on her phone by the bathrooms. I used to come here all the time my freshmen year and I have seen this place go down down down hill ever since. My husband and I tried this for the first time the afternoon of 6-17-2014. Needless to say, we will be back as often as we can! The atmosphere here is great. We were greeted very quickly and seated in a cozy little romantic nook at a table just big enough for the two of us. The vintage china cups and saucers we had were very elegant looking, and I enjoyed looking around at all the old vintage wedding photos on the walls. Being in an old apothecary building, they have kept some of the old cabinets and such and it gives the place a wonderful charm. We chose to order the Full Afternoon Tea for Two, since it seemed like a wonderful deal. Back home in Milwaukee, similar places would charge $50-100 for 2 people so it was a welcome surprise to see it so affordable - great news for a newly married graduate student and his artist wife :) For teas, I had the Herbal Apple Chai, since I am not a huge fan of black tea. It was simply wonderful. My husbands first pot was Copper Country Connection, which is a black elderberry tea. It was a little strong for my taste, but he enjoyed it. As he is a huge fan of Chai, he switched his second pot to Indian Spiced Chai, which he really liked. Our entrees were nice portions, considering we still had their 3 tier tray coming yet. I had their "wild card" of the day, which was a fruited quinoa salad. It has grapes, cranberries and cucumbers in it, with a sweet and tangy vinaigrette dressing which was cool and refreshing, and a cup of California Cheese soup, a creamy cheese soup with cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots. The salad was good. The soup was amazing! My husband had their bacon quiche and a Pasta Fagioli soup. The quiche was incredible, which surprised me since I usually turn up my nose at quiche. The soup was good too, though I have no idea what all was in it, since it disappeared from his cup pretty quickly :) The last round was their 3 tier dessert tray. They brought it out with cream and lemon curd. Our bottom tray had two nice slices of absolutely delicious rum cake and 4 warm small delicious cinnamon scones. Those disappeared quite quickly, along with much of our lemon curd and cream. The second tier had 6 small finger sandwiches, 3 egg salad and 3 cranberry orange, both on delightfully colorful bread. It worked out perfect for us as he really liked the egg salad, and I really liked the orange cranberry, so we each has 2 of our fave and one of the other. The top tray was the desserts. Each dessert has two of them, so thankfully we didn't have to battle over who would try what. The first dessert was a spiced mini muffin that was warm and moist. After that, was a mocha chocolate cookie that was really good. Thirdly there was an iced chocolate chip cookie bar was almost too sweet but not quite, and finally was a maple lace cookie that was just divine. The service the entire time was nice, and they made sure to time things well so we were able to eat at a leisurely pace yet didn't feel like we were waiting around for anything. They were very attentive on making sure that we were good on tea so we never went without. I would fully recommend this place, and cannot wait for some of my tea loving friends to visit up here so I can show them this UP treat! read more

For a leisurely afternoon in downtown Houghton, there is no better place than the Tea Room! I generally budget at least 1-2 hours for a visit, as the staff tends to schedule the delivery of tea, food, and desserts to your table at a leisurely pace. Unlike some of the other restaurants in town, however, with slower service, the Tea Room never feels like it is lagging behind, but rather that you are getting time to truly appreciate your food and have a good conversation with your companions. Speaking of the food, it is top notch for a light lunch. I've never had the quiche, so I can't speak to that, but the soups are always varied and delicious and the salads have wonderfully unique twists. The Tea Room also falls back on some old favorites like the Caesar salad, so you're bound to find something to please your palate. The dessert tray is superb, with a vast array of brownies, creme puffs, finger sandwiches, and scones, all served with lemon curd and Devonshire cream. It makes my mouth water just to think of it. Of course, I would be remiss to write a review of the Tea Room without discussing the tea. The options are numerous and range from black to green to white, with other choices for those not inclined to drink tea.Each person in your party receives his or her own pot of tea with refills. I heartily recommend the Hazelnut Vanilla, which has a rich and slightly sweet taste, though you can't go wrong with any choice. Some of them, like the Hazelnut Vanilla, are more common, while others are local specialties, such as the Keweenaw Sunset, a fruity flavored favorite. Mindful of the abundance of individual preferences regarding tea, the Tea Room also provides virtually unlimited supplies of milk and sugar. The ambiance of the place is similarly enjoyable. It is set in one storefront of an old stone building on Shelden, which is Houghton's main drag for those not familiar. It's a nice contrast inside from the traffic whizzing by out front. The dining area is a successful combination of your grandmother's living room and a slightly upscale restaurant. The tables have old family pictures on them and a variety of "dress up" hats adorn the walls. Next time you're in Houghton, grab a seat at the Tea Room, select a tea, and pick out a hat. It's a one of my favorite places to spend the afternoon. read more

It's the genuine experience. High quality tea (actually brewed, not just a bag tossed in lukewarm water), food identical to an English tearoom (lemon, cream, scones) and amazing quiche and soups. I've been to the Tea Room before, but this time I wasn't impressed. The tea was fantastic as always, but the service and food weren't worth the price. The waitress misunderstood our order, and didn't let us know what she brought out. We didn't find out until the bill that we were charged twice the price of what we actually got! If it was truly that much, it was definitely not worth the price. The staff was confusing when trying to justify the bill, so we just paid and left. We won't be going back! read more

This place is mostly about cosmetics. Decor and table settings are charming, but create expectations that aren't met. I should have caught a clue when I noticed the music piped in consisted of pieces popular in the 50s-70s, rather than the classical music one would expect in this setting. My companion said her Lady Ethel tomato basil soup was very tasty, and that her mac 'n cheese was good. However, both were brought on the same plate, so that the mac 'n cheeses must have been cold by the time she got to the entree. I thought the place was a rip-off with just plain bad food. I had the $16 Afternoon Tea (when in Rome...), thinking it would be especially good here. The Queen Elizabeth tea was weak, and the sandwiches and sweets were less than average at best. Sandwich filling was so skimpy that it was almost like no filling. Razor-thin, poor quality, plastic-looking lunch meat turkey and watered down cream cheese on dried-out white bread swirl-dyed with food coloring. "Scones" looked like none I've found here or on the other side of the pond: 1.25" in diameter and half an inch thick. Dry, crumbly and not good-tasting. Impossible to apply the cream and lemon curd condiments. BTW, the cream seemed to be whipped cream; no attempt made to serve Devon or clotted cream, or reproduce same (there are recipes). Other sweets were about 50% okay. I've seldom encountered a bakery sweet I didn't like, but half what was on the server was just plain bad-tasting, like someone let a 10 year-old loose in the kitchen to experiment with ingredients about which the kid knew nothing. The two cookies were good, though. I always consider I could have just ordered the wrong menu item, but not in this case. Maybe I was there on a bad day. But my experience was bad enough that I won't return. read more
