The Hut - A Gem in the Keweenaw!…read more The Hut is a very unique experience, and we were thrilled to stumble upon it--especially since dining options in the area are a bit limited. From the moment we walked in, we were struck by the quirky decor that ties into the Keweenaw's mining history. It's charming, memorable, and adds a special local touch you don't often find. My wife was on the hunt for some Lake Superior whitefish, and The Hut *delivered*. She went with the broiled preparation and couldn't stop raving about it--flaky, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. I opted for a patty melt and was equally impressed. The marble rye was perfectly toasted, and the flavors were spot on. Service was decent overall. Our server did forget my tea, which was a minor hiccup, but honestly, it didn't detract much from the experience. The quality of the food and the one-of-a-kind atmosphere more than made up for it. If you're in the Keweenaw and looking for a satisfying meal with some local character, The Hut is definitely worth a stop.

Free pitcher of beer with an order of a pizza! What?!? We even got Keewaunaw Brewing Company Amber!!! We are veggie lovers, so we had the veggie pizza. I was a little skeptical about broccoli on a pizza, but this was probably the BEST pizza my husband and I ever had! No joke!! The sauce, the crust, fresh mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers, and just the right amount of cheese! Yummy! I hope my son can get a scholarship to Michigan Tech someday so we can come back and enjoy. Thanks for a great experience. Service was excellent as well!

Despite the homemade crust, it was a bit heavy and NOT the thin crust we had in mind. It's not exactly the rising crust but more dense on the edges as seen in the picture. Definitely not worth coming back for. The food was just average with big portions. The 14 inch large pizza is too much for two people! With that being said, the friendly service made up for the mediocre food. Our server was very attentive and helpful. Even informed us how the pizza was charged with the split. If you're looking for a good pizza spot, this falls short of the mark. I understand it's the UP and resources are scarce but there are much better options in Houghton and nearby.

There were only a few people there. We sat down and was greeted by our waitress immediately. After reviewing the menu I decided to get the Fanny Hooe BBQ burger. This is a huge burger topped with plenty of thick sliced bacon, smoked gouda cheese, caramelized onions, and what seems like a gallon of Kentucky burbon barbecue sauce. All these on a large brioche bun. The burger was out on a short time. There was sauce running down the sides of the bun already, which was soon running down my arm. The sauce was sweet, tangy, and Smokey. The thick sliced that bacon topped this massive burger was crispy adding plenty of texture to the burger. Hiding under the smoky gooey melted gouda was a pile of caramelized onions. The burger itself was cooked to a perfect medium well. All these flavors worked together into one great burger. I would have needed a box if I had eaten the fries, but I left them because they were soft and oily. I'm not sure if they weren't cooked enough ot the fryer was set too low, but they definitely took away from the meal. I will give this place another try when we come back to the lodge again.

Our servers were attentive and helpful, however, we had to wait for almost an hour for the food to arrive given their adequately staff. Hubby ordered the Den burger with burger and I had the shrimp ragotoni. I enjoyed the homemade pasta but the entree was a bit heavy with the cream sauce but it does have great flavors. Love they have KBC beers on tap and the blueberry ale was very refreshing. Overall, this is a solid choice in downtown Houghton with lakeside view and good menu options. Do keep in mind that prices are a bit high given it's in the UP. Also, you pay extra for protein in pasta entrees as well as bread in appetizers that's usually included.

The server told us the specials for the day, and I remember there being a LOT - almost as much as what was on the regular menu! We almost got the chicken wings special, but we ordered the burrata caprese appetizer and added prosciutto for $4. It was good! For entrees, I ordered the duck breast, which seems to be a staple item from here. I ordered it medium rare and it was definitely medium at best, but still tender. It is not a huge portion, and I would've like the skin crispier, but the meat itself had great flavor. It sits on a bed of parsnip puree with a blood orange reduction (a little too sweet and too much of it on the plate for me) and sauteed spinach. It left me just satisfied enough, but still a bit hungry. My fiancé got the flank steak, which was probably around 8 oz but the menu doesn't list it, with french fries and some sauteed vegetables. He said he was actually pleased with the type, portion, and cook on the vegetables. The french fries are that "old-fashioned" style, which I really like! And the chimichurri sauce was fresh and flavorful. The service was mid - sometimes it was fairly quick and attentive, other times we felt like we were waiting a long time to be tended to. For a more local, seasonal, "farm-to-table"-esque meal, this is probably the closest you will get in Houghton. The front desk at our hotel said she heard this restaurant was pricey/expensive, but I thought it was pretty fair!
