It is known as "the sport of kings" Created in the early 2000's, fowling is growing in popularity, and it had been most commonly found at tailgates. The biggest fowling event is held at the Indy 500 "coca cola lot" on the Saturday before the race. The game was invented by mere accident, by three beer drinking men named Chutt, John Von Mack and Mr. Skip. I was first introduced to Fowling in the summer, 2009 playing when they were playing at the historic Stonehouse in Detroit. Once the Michigan weather started to turn, FOWLING moved inside to an empty warehouse in Troy, then moved to an old Toy Warehouse on Vandyke and now has found its permanent home in SE Hamtramck. Great for a group (make reservations ahead of time, runs about $15/pp) and great for a date (come to open fowl - only $10/person). This is way cooler than I thought, and I had high expectations. They have a 40 foot bar at the entrance when you walk in, past the counter to pay for fowling. Not only are there four taps with good beer (that get filled from the bottom with a unique system), but tons of canned beers, and a "mystery" vending machine stocked with all matters of stuff for 2, 3, or 4 dollars. Fowling is ten dollars all night for unlimited play - if it's packed in there, you may have to put your name on a waiting list, or keep winning. The game is sort of a mix between bowling, beer pong and football, and it is addicting and fun. They gave us a great tutorial of how to play the game and the rules associated with it. Then the fun begins. Teams of 1,2 or 3 on either side. The game is a lot more active than I thought. That made it a lot of fun. You have to prevent collateral damage from other teams errant football throws. It happens. Alot. I tried a regular football throw, I tried double handed overhand throws, & I tried under hand throwing throws. None of them were very successful. But all of them were fun. I had a great time listening to the excitement in the warehouse. People were cheering, laughing, booing, groaning, and having a great time. It's contagious. Jay, the bartender, was fantastic as well. Went there this past Saturday for a group birthday party. My wife called about 2 months before to reserve 2 lanes and put down the down payment, in which case the person she spoke with on the phone (after making multiple attempts to contact) finalized the down payment with little to no other information provided. When we showed up on Saturday, we were informed by the *extremely* rude woman at the door, that A) my wife should have showed up early to make sure everybody from our party was being represented/showed up, B) that for everybody that WASN'T participating it would be $10 cover charge just to SIT AND WATCH, and C) if anybody from our party that didn't pay the $12 tried to fowl(yes, $2 was the difference in cost between being a spectator versus being a participant), they and/or our whole party would get kicked out. If my wife was told ANY of that when she made the phone call to reserve the lanes, we would have decided to just go bowling. The barstaff was also very rude and condescending, as if they would rather be doing anything else but serving people. For a group birthday party, first time customers, it was a very, very terrible experience. For as busy as the place was, I was shocked considering how bad the customer service was from the employees that work there. Horrible setup inside as well: the fowling lanes are right in the middle of the warehouse, with people congested all around waiting for their spots (most people I would guess come to just open fowl as opposed to reserving lanes). The bathrooms were in the corner, and the bar was on the far side of the lane, forcing pretty much everybody to have to wade through a crowd of restless drinkers waiting to fowl to pretty much navigate your way through the place. I highly don't recommend coming to this place. I myself will never go and plan on making it a point to bash the place if anybody I know ever brings it up. It's not hard to have good customer service, and, if your staff is bitter, figure out why and change it. read more

What a fun way to spend an hour or two. This is an original sport unique to Detroit! It is basically bowling but with a football. If you have a big group you can reserve a lane for $120 or just drop in for $10/person for open fowling. I think there are 20 lanes total. 10 for reserved and 10 open lanes. If you come on a weekend it'll be pretty packed. It is crazy busy here. Why wouldn't it?! It is new and unique! There is also a bar here and some seating where you can throw a party! The restroom was cleverly marked with a female and male fowling pin. Its adorable! Multiple stalls and spacious. They do need another hand dryer though. They have their own private lot but its not enough for a packed house. The parking lot does need some work since it only has one entrance. Most people end up parking on the narrow street. Overall, it is a fun experience and yes its a new sport so there might be some kinks that needs to be worked out but I think it might take the nation by storm. It's a ton of fun. 4. Anyone can play, even if they're not an athlete. Fowling Warehouse is a great place to go with a group of people for a great time. I highly recommend it to anyone. The best part....if you get a bonk (knock the middle fin off the table without knocking over any other pins in the first throw), you get to blow this super loud fog horn like the one at the Red Wings games. When my boyfriend told me we were going "fowling" for his best friends birthday, as expected, the first reaction was WTF IS THAT?! Then I thought, what drunk college kid threw a football at bowling pins in his dorm room or frat house and said HEY! NEW SPORT! So no, I did not go in this with an open mind, but after playing it for a few minutes, I highly regretted it. This is so much fun! The concept is so simple...throw the football and try to knock over your opponents pins...but it is truly harder than it looks, especially under the influence. I can't throw a football to save my life! One side is for reservations and the other is for open play which is $10. If you want a reservation, book it weeks, maybe months in advance. This place gets pretty crowded. WARNING: THIS GAME CAN LAST LONGER THAN MONOPOLY IF EVERYONE SUCKS AT THROWING and in order to play, you have to wait in line until someone loses then the next in line takes their spot....unless your group has a reservation. We got lucky and just took over a lane after a reservation finished playing. They have two bars and they both only have one bartender so you prepare to wait. Nice selection of beer and drinks were strong. They have no food so bring your own or they have a pizza place that they have a nice relationship with that delivers. I will definitely be returning. Very friendly staff with a full bar offering a variety of craft beers and cocktails to enjoy while you're playing. The game seems simple enough but is actually kind of challenging and super fun! It is a warehouse and the game is active so I recommend dressing fairly casually and to the weather...gets a bit chilly during winter and a bit warm during peak summer months. Parking is ample right in front. They don't offer food but you can have anything you want delivered from local places to you at the facility or bring your own in. I'm giving it two stars just because the game is fun and we were able to reserve two lanes for my group, so we didn't have to fight the crowds for open play. If you are able to reserve lanes, which isn't easy due to their poor communication and ability to answer the phone, that's your best bet. However, the customer service is horrible. The people that greet you when you walk in are unpleasant and the bartenders, in particular, are some of the rudest I have ever seen. Apparently, they don't want to earn tips. They are genuinely annoyed if you ask a question and act unbelievably inconvenienced when you order a drink. There's also a $10 minimum on cards. Surprised my brother for his 30th with a trip to Fowling Warehouse and it was awesome! I look forward to going back. You must sign a waiver because footballs fly and bounce everywhere. $120 reserves a lane for 10 people or if you come in for open fowling it's $10/per person. We had a lane from 7-9pm on a Friday night and at 9 open fowling started so since we were already in the door we didn't have to pay extra. It's like a pool hall - you see an open lane, you jump in, or you call winners to an ongoing game. It's an actual warehouse, so I assumed it would be drafty but it was the complete opposite so don't bother wearing more than a t-shirt. There's tables and chairs scattered around so you have places to put your stuff - we ordered delivery from Amicci's as recommended. They said it'd take 45 minutes but it was over an hour. It's $10 for unlimited pay (which is cheaper than the HUB in Auburn Hills). You challenge the people who are playing and winner stays playing. Fowling is a mix of football and bowling. You have to be be careful and always play defense while playing; the football/bowling pins can hit at any given moment if you're not paying attention. They had a live band play last night and they were not only too loud, but also not really good. It was hard to talk over the music. They also had this unnecessary horn that came from the bar-- not too sure what the reason they play that ridiculous horn is for, but just make sure to cover your ear when they blow the whistle so you don't damage your ear drum. You also get to meet some nice people while you're waiting in line for your turn to play. The entrance to this warehouse is a bit tricky, so be careful of that. This was my second time here last night; the first time they had a BBQ food truck outside.. but no fear, there is a super delicious polish cafe a mile down the road. This is a great play for group hangouts and I highly recommend trying Fowling at least once! read more

Playing the game was fun, but the staff, customer service, and building suck. The staff is extremely rude. I got there around 6pm last Saturday. It was a decent crowd, but nothing major. I was asked when I got there if I had been there before, and I had, so the lady at the door said I didn't have to sign their waiver. I said "thanks" and proceeded to walk passed the people that were signing their waivers. After I had walked by, the lady at the door rudely yelled "you still have to wait!" Wait for what? I was already in, passed everyone, when she started her little power trip and hissy fit. What the hell did she want me to do? Stand there and wait for 5 people in front of me to fill out paperwork? That's fun!... Once in side it wasn't any better. There's no wait staff that walks around, so you have to cram your way up to the bar. The bar area faces the fowling lanes, and it's planted right in the main isle way. Idiotic isn't the word for it, it's much worse. Droves of people are standing waiting to Fowl, others are competing to get a drink, and best of all... all of this madness is situated directly in between the majority of the venue, and the bathrooms. BRILLIANT!!! You have to push passed this ridiculous gauntlet of people every time you want to use the bathroom, get a drink, walk over to the band area, or try to play on one of the far lanes. It's a ridiculously stupid layout. Adding to the awesomeness of the experience, is the fact that "house rules" dictate that you have to stand at the gate and do absolutely nothing, without walking away to get a drink, and without going to the bathroom, if you actually want to play a game. If you "walk away" you're out of line and "lose your turn." House rules... BRILLIANT!!! annndddd... you have to constantly guard against over-zealous dickheads that want to take cuts in line, steal your spot, and argue ad nausium, with no help from any "staff" because they're virtually non-existent. On top of all of that, the bartenders are completely rude, and act as if you're lucky to be there, they're too good to serve you, but they're going to anyhow, you know, just because... and you're lucky to finally get a drink... when they get around to it... And pay double what you'd pay at an ordinary bar. I don't understand why people come here. For a relatively minimal investment you can play this game in your back yard, with better people, have better service, and not have to deal with the rudeness that this place has to offer. If I lived next door to this place, I would rather drive to the HUB Stadium to Fowl. I haven't been there yet, but it has to be better than this nonsense. read more

This place is so much. A surprisingly difficult game that will test your arm endurance and agility, fowling is a great time for all! Because you're throwing a football, the ball takes wild bounces that can send you sprinting all over the place. You'll have to be spry to keep balls from bouncing into your pins because that collateral damage counts! Awesome experience! I brought my son here to celebrate his birthday with 4 of his best buds. We came for open fowling on an early Sunday afternoon so we didn't have to wait for an open lane. The boys are all football fanatics so they loved the twist on using the ball to knock down bowling pins. It proved to be more challenging than they expected and stoked their competitive fires. They also had a lot of laughs along the way. I love that anyone can fowl regardless of your age or skill level. The $10 charge for open fowling was a sweet deal. They don't offer food so we ordered pizza from a great local joint which provided prompt delivery. I really wish they had a pop machine- our only option was to get pop from the bar which was pricey and meant very limited options. All in all a fantastic day! If you're in the reserved area (back of the warehouse) you can't see the TVs and you are very far away from the bar. Would be better if the design was different. As a newcomer to the sport, I was initially unenthusiastic about throwing a football at bowling pins; I quickly changed my tune after a few minutes of playing. The game is extremely straightforward; knock down the opposing team's pins first, and have a good time. The warehouse itself looks a little unnerving from the parking lot, but the inside is a bustling hub of activity. You have to sign a waiver before playing, since there are constantly footballs whizzing around. There's a well-stocked bar within the facility, with sports playing on the televisions. The concept is pretty simple: Throw a football at bowling pins and try to knock them all over. This will ultimately result in footballs flying everywhere, and a hilariously unsafe environment. Not seriously unsafe; just enough to keep things interesting. And what they advertise is true - your ability to spiral a football has little impact on your chances. My better half kicked my ass at least half the time. On top of all that, the bar has a decent selection of classic/low-rent beers and craft stuff, and they appear to have a pretty cool live music and beer garden venues brewing. The pricing scheme is somewhat interesting. For the most part, you pay 10 bucks, sign a waiver, then get to "fowl" for as long as you want in the "open fowling" area. A pretty sweet deal. That holds true until the place gets super-crowded (it wasn't too bad when we went), when you might need to start putting your name on a board to get on a lane. If you don't want to take that chance, or if you've got a huge group coming and don't want to be split up all over the place, you can book a lane in a separate area, but that gets kinda pricey: $120 for 2 hours for 1 lane. Of course, with enough people, that's not a bad deal either. In any case, it's something to contemplate. The only serious thing they need to fix at this point are the (fairly common) leaks in the 100 year old roof. Clearly, the building is old, but they really do need to get on that before someone slips and cracks their tailbone on a rainy day. Will it become a nationwide phenomenon, or perhaps compete with regular "bowling" as a pastime for innocent-night-out-on-the-town-goers? Who knows, but it's fun. I was kind of over hearing about fowling all the time. Two sets of bowling pins facing each other to be hit with footballs..what's so cool about that? But when I was forced into it, I was pleasantly surprised. The warehouse is huge, so the environment is not awkward at all especially if you're a beginner. You can play against your friends if your group is large enough or strangers, so fowling seems like a versatile activity to me (date, birthday party, casual hang out, etc). It's great to have this around for something different to do, and when we stopped in unannounced on a Saturday, it was easy to get started. I didn't even fowl, but had fun cheering my team on and being a part of the group. Everyone around seemed to be having an awesome time! I had been to the old Fowling warehouse and had been eagerly awaiting the opening of this one. It was better then I was expecting as they had upscaled it just enough to make things more comfortable, but not lose the warehouse vibe. There is now a full bar with beer, wine & a good choice of liquors. The fowling section is expanded with a lot more lanes, and surrounded by wire but still leaving access to your drink on a pass through ledge. There are tables and a stage also, I'm hoping to see bands there soon. I was surprised to see how many people were there that were not fowling, but just came to hang out at the bar. The bathrooms were decent, they were still being worked on, but they were clean and had all the amenities - these things are important to women! For $10 you can Fowl all night - a huge bargain by my standards. It's a fun, silly game that all can play, it you can't throw the football far enough, try rolling it, underhanding it or any other method to get it to the other end to knock down the pins. Best of all, I love that it's a start up business that is unique to Detroit, invented by a Detroit guy and that is now successful because of the blood, sweat & tears of the guys that believed in it. Came on a Saturday night with a small group and at 6:30 the place was already packed. You pay $10 at the door to play all the games you want, sweet. I've never seen this game before, let alone played it. It's a bowling/football/bags/beer pong cross in the best way. What I like was the take no prisoners approach; someone else's ball knocks down your pins? Too bad, still gotta pull them out. Rough. My only complaint is if you wait in line at a lane where some players are absolutely awful and can't aim worth crap, you're gonna be waiting a while for your turn. When we finally played, I thought the whole night, how hard can this be?! Harder than it looks my friends. Spent most of my time on defense because my offensive game was non-existent. They have plenty of seating and a massive bar with a ton of beer options. Although they don't have a kitchen, they have delivery menus posted up at the bar. We took full advantage of it and ordered some pizza. Delivery guy brought it right to us, as they actually asked what lane we were at when placing the order. Good deal. SUPER FAN HERE!! So much so that I convinced my office to have their Christmas Party here. We carted our tooshies from Flint all the way to Hamtramck and we had a BLAST! I had the lanes reserved ahead of time and made food arrangements with them as well. They know a local pizza guy, Amicci's Pizza, and had it ready for us when we got there. The food was delicious and the fowling was hilariously fun. I think I got clocked in the head a few times but it made for a good laugh. Harmless at best. The girls kicked major ass and we beat all the guys by knocking our pins down first. Who'd have thought?! We were probably there for at least 3 hours and everyone had an amazing time. I'm not sure if it's a better idea to reserve a lane for the $120 for two hours or to attempt to jump on one of the open lanes ($10 a head) when someone is done or willing to let you play for honors. If I was going to do this again I think I'd reserve a lane if I had a larger group like we did when we came to see what Fowling was all about. It's definitely fun but with the upside of fun came the bad side of management here. People kept filing in no matter how busy it got....they give you a wrist band and then you fend for yourself. The back ten lanes are reserved fowling ONLY while the front ten lanes are open fowling ONLY....unless of course you're the owner and trying to impress your beer distributor then the rules don't apply and he might snag a lane unto himself. We thought that was a little crappy since that group wasn't really playing at all, but so it goes. We made friends and pulled a lane to play on from a really nice family out for Saturday fun. Onto bar service....hire another bartender!!! While the one guy they had working the bar was standing-on-his-head-amazing, trying to keep up, it didn't really matter with the amount of people looking for a drink while waiting to find a lane. I'm guessing this place gets busier with each passing day and they'll need to hire another bartender soon but I can let that slide too. Next, maybe invest in some netting that anchors to the floor so that you can actually separate the lanes. Then players 1) don't have to chase their ball across five lanes of other people who are in the middle of play 2) balls aren't inadvertently knocking down the pins on other lanes' platforms and 3) people are less likely to catch a ball to the face. It seems like an inexpensive fix since they have all the metal roof structure overhead already. Just a thought. I'm betting that whoever opens the next Fowling warehouse makes this happen. Holy Wah Batman that was fun. We had a group of about 20 try fowling and what a hoot. 20 lanes in a open warehouse. Trying to knock down bowling pins is a lot tougher than it sounds. Combine that with tons of beer choices including mystery beers and your going to have a great fun evening, especially the more you drink the worse your tosses of the football get. The fun part is when you fu a throw hitting the next lanes pins, it counts. Good bands in the evening and bring your own food. FYI arrive early to find parking and you have to fill out a waiver form.
