Rather than the past thin, tender crust, it's now twice as thick (not their sicilian style) and is like a tough piece of bread with toppings. I'm so disappointed. I'll probably give them one more chance on the off-chance that tonight was a fluke. But then I may have to find a new local favorite.

The personableness and kindness I received the entire time I was there is what is missing in a lot of the world these days. They are two blocks from the hospital and I was going to stay the night with my grandmother. Both took the time to ask about her, talk about my situation, and make sure I felt like a friend before I left. I didn't place an order and wait for it to be handed to me. I was talked through a menu I was unfamiliar with. And I was treated like a human being. Can not wait to return.

That's been true for as long as I can remember, because I grew up here and I'm pretty damn old. Automatic Pizza has to be on the high end of the Athens pizza quality scale, though. Enough so that, as I explain in most recent Yelp review I wrote, we'd drive halfway across Athens to pick up a pizza from here even though there was a neighborhood pizza joint just up our old street. Housed in an old corner gas station that has since served time as the Black Forest Bake Shop, among other things, Automatic goes for the New York style and does it better than most places outside of New York and the Northeast do it. Good sturdy, flavorful crust with zesty sauce, the large size (18 inches) is massive clown-shoe pizza that is totally foldable, the way I want to eat this style of pizza. The staff has always been friendly, too. Parking is a bit of an annoyance. There are like three parking spots, and the cross-streets don't have much in the way of street parking. Four-stars-plus.

Instead, they deliver consistently good food and friendly service, which makes them stand out even more. But regardless of the context, Crawford Pizza truly shines. First and foremost, their pizzas ARE good--both the traditional crust piled with meats and the alternative cauliflower crust with veggies. There is a sign, but the front door and visible restaurant is on the back, but nevertheless found this and thought we would give it a try. I ordered a calzone with pepperoni, artichokes, black olives, and mushrooms, and it was good size, a ton of bread and dough but tasty. I ended up cutting these in quarters and serving on a plate after air frying them to get hot upon dinner time and got them crispy which really made the crust stand out. This was a lot of bread, and not filled with toppings as much as I would've thought, but it tasted good and worked perfectly for our occasion. There are better options for food in Hoschton. Please support the local restaurant owners over the big chains, especially when the food is so very much better.
