I took my brother here to go get his braces tightened after we moved to the city. They saw how poorly they had been done and fixed it! My brother had been telling me how much it hurt but I assumed it was just because they were braces. I'm thankful we stopped here or it could have been worse. Thank you. Dr. Surprenant is the best dentist I have ever seen. I've been going to his clinic for several years for cleaning, but recently I needed more extensive dental work thanks to the fact that I have been involuntarily clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth. I needed a crown and a mouth guard - having never had extensive dental work done before, I was nervous. I called his cell phone twice - once because I was not sure when the office would open on account of the pandemic, and the second time because my temporary crown got lost. Both times, he was patient and compassionate. He is easy to talk to and has a great sense of humor. He never pushes unnecessary treatments like other dentists. I've been going to Dr. Surprenant for maybe eight years and I highly recommend him. The cleanings are fast and easy and him and his team are very professional and great. I've gone to my fair share of terrible dentists in DC (there are SO many of them!) but Dr. Surprenant does a great cleaning and doesn't push unnecessary procedures on you. Nice guy, and clean, well-equipped office with a friendly staff. When I got my first crown, I was very surprised that the temporary crown fell out in less than 24 hours (while eating soft food) -- it was a big pain, and I had to make another very inconvenient trip. I figured the problem was a fluke. (I've had other crowns -- no other temporaries have fallen out in less than a week.) So I decided to get my second crown from him, since he seems like such a nice guy and the office is professional. But while he was working, he seriously cut the side of my tongue ("it'll feel like you bit your tongue" - no, it's much more painful.) And that second temporary crown fell out in FOUR HOURS (I was eating yogurt! did not bite on anything remotely hard). Since it was a Thursday afternoon, and his office is closed on Fridays, I have had a broken tooth scraping against my cut tongue for 4 days -- When the office was supposed to open on Monday morning, I called first thing and tried all day: No one answered. No tape, no info, no VM. I started calling again today, Tuesday at 8:30 AM -- again, no answer of any kind. I tried to write to the the email address he had given me (though it's not on the website) -- got the reply that the email was"undeliverable or no longer in service." I have already paid him for the crown, but I am desperate to get this ragged tooth covered, so I'm now trying to find another dentist who will fit me in on an emergency basis. Terrible, frustrating experience. read more

Important, the one start rating is on the office staff and not necessarily on Dr. Surprenant. The staff is unfriendly, borderline rude. On the phone they are snarky and in person they don't even make eye contact when talking to you. They treat you as if you are not even there. God forbid something is out of the ordinary, they won't provide solutions and will leave all to the patient to figure things out. Not helpful at all. From the moment of placing the appointment, to the way they handle the insurance forms it is a very unpleasant experience. If he had not been recommended by a friend I would not have put up with it. Unlike any other dentist, they process forms two days in advance. Or so they say, basically they ask for the information two days in advance but do not process it until you get there. This is puzzling as it defeats the purpose of asking for the information in advance. The request of your information comes over email. Not at the time you make the appointment but days later. They send you attachments and not secure online forms. You have to either send back email with attached forms and hope your information is not stolen, send an old fashion fax or deliver in person. This last part is not surprising. Most practices are very low tech. Note that the doctor won't see you unless these forms are filled out and your insurance information is confirmed prior to going in. Otherwise you are to pay for the visit in advance. You get an email with red letters explaining their policy. Though, payment in advance was mumbled by the unfriendly staff. I believe their policy does not really say either way. It only says that you agree to pay for the visit out of pocket. This is the first time I have had to do this. No other doctor or dentist has ever done things this way. I'm sure all confirm your insurance information but I think they handle it in a more gracious way. It is almost seamless, where I didn't even noticed. It is clear that they are no patient first kind of practice. Policies are more to protect themselves than to make a better experience for the patient. The forms talk about the level of care that you prefer. The introductory paragraph says that adults rarely know they have dental problems and that many of this grave problems don't have any symptoms. Then it gives you the option to do treatment all at once or to spread payments over time. Seems as if they are preparing you for a lengthy treatment. Rather than feeling that they give you choices, you feel that you are about to get ripped off. And good luck asking the staff for clarification on your choices. You will either get a snarky remark, or a non-answer. You basically end up feeling the same way you do when you walk into one of those mechanics that suggest a bunch of unnecessary work on your car. But please note that I'm only talking about how you feel. I have no proof that they do this. I'm just talking on the way the staff conducts the business. In any case, one of the signs outside the office says cosmetic dentistry. So I can see why they would direct you into doing some unnecessary but cosmetic work. As other reviewers have pointed out, you do feel that they push things on you, like x-ray. While I do feel these are necessary in some cases at that point you are not really sure if these are meant as a doctor's recommendation given the way they pitch things. It feels more like an up-sale. But to be honest perhaps at this point I was just so put off by the staff that it made the whole experience feel cheap. Bottom line, if you are bothered by this kind of stuff don't go. Nothing extraordinary about the rest of the experience. There are plenty of other average dentist with much more friendly staff out there. But if nothing of this raises any red flags or you want to experience for yourself, go ahead and schedule your appointment. I cannot say that at the end I did not get my teeth clean or that I did not get the service that I needed. I just wished I didn't have to put up with the staff. I doubt I will be going back. I recommend reading reviews on Dr. Brady as well. They share the same office staff. More that one person has complained about the rudeness of their staff. read more

I absolutely dread the day that Dr. Suprenant retires. He is by far the best dentist I've ever had, and I've had a good balance between great dentists and terrible ones. I am the type of person who had terrible dental hygiene until college, when I had some big fillings. After that, I transformed into a daily flosser with impeccable home care practices. From the office cleanliness to the friendly staff, I love this place. Never once has anyone tried to push treatments on me. I love that I can trust the care and recommendations. My hygienist is also phenomenal. She teaches dental hygiene and is compassionate and skilled. I've never had a hygienist feel my lymph nodes and perform a detailed oral exam before but she does this every six months. The X-ray tech is also very gentile. I have a small mouth and that big plastic thing that I have to bite is uncomfortable, but she's great at making sure everything is done right on the first try. read more

No one likes switching doctors, it's one of the worst things about moving, you find one you like, you build a relationship, and it's almost worth flying back just so you don't have to find all new doctors in your new home. After reading some of the reviews I was a little nervous that he mind find a bunch of things wrong with my teeth, and after reading and filling out the paperwork, I was worried he would try to push some cosmetic surgery on me. None of which was the case. Just a cleaning, great teeth and gums he said, and that was it. Didn't push anything and was in no way pretentious. Well I'm glad I didn't fly back for my dentist appointment, Dr. Surprenant was GREAT! He's the first doctor in DC I feel confident recommending to people. He was very thorough, and HE was the one who actually examined AND cleaned my teeth! I've never had that at a dentist's office before. They had water when I walked in and the waiting room was empty-yay! I was taken back within moments of getting there and the woman who did my ex-rays was really nice. They had the View on the entire time which was funny, never watch that show but it was interesting. The receptionist wasn't the best... When I arrived she kept interrupting me and when I made my appointment about a month ago and she said she would email me the forms so I could submit them early. She made it seem like she was going to send them that day but it wasn't until many weeks later. When I submitted the documents I asked her to respond with 1. The correct date and time (the e-mail she sent me was different than the day I had written down). 2. If I was going to have a co-pay and how much it would be. She never responded, but luckily the date I had written down was correct and her e-mail was wrong. And even better, my insurance covered the visit completely, and there was no copay! Yay! Anyway, I came for the doctor, not the receptionist, and he was great! I even got a free toothbrush out of the deal! :) Will be back in 6 months. read more

4.5 Stars Right off the bat, yep, you might have to wait a while for your first appointment. Hence the (theoretical) 1/2-star deduction. I think I called in early July and couldn't get an appointment (mine and my husband's first) until the very end of August. I was nonplussed. All summer long in my Dupontish neighborhood I had my choice of a half-dozen on-street parking spaces at 6 pm... but I couldn't get a dentist's appointment for almost 2 months? It was totally worth the wait. -Best dental hygienists EVER. Like my husband said-- you know half the reason people come here is for the hygienists. Friendly, funny, knowledgeable, zero guilt trips and they somehow cast a magic regular-flossing spell on both of us. -Dr. Surprenant is professional, respectful and thorough. Doesn't seem harried, doesn't push a bunch of extra "super-ultra-necessary" cr@p on you, does good work, welcomes questions and gives thoughtful, honest responses. Really couldn't ask for more. -Minimal, if any, in-office wait (at least at the three appointments I've had). I think my longest wait was 10 minutes. -Convenient location. I mean, for me, we're talking a 5-10 minute walk, but for anyone, really... it's just a couple blocks from the Dupont Metro. So, yeah... is it any surprise his dance card is full? If your teeth are falling out of your head and you need a new dentist NOW NOW NOW, go somewhere else. I'm not a review writing person, but this office merits it. Everyone is kind, friendly, and helpful. Dr. Suprenant is the best dentist I've ever gone to. I recommend him to all my friends who are anxious about dentist visits because he's calming and professional. I agree with other reviewers that his cleanings are so easy and painless. As with pretty much everyone else, it took a few months of waiting before I got to have my appointment. While I would not say that any dentist visit is worth the wait, this was definitely the best dentist experience I have had in a long time. Office is clean, appointment was on time, they have up to date technology, Dr Surprenant sees you first and the entire visit (basic check-up and cleaning) took just 30min! Best.dentist.in.DC. Here comes the cliche bus, but honestly - I look forward to coming to my appointments here. For a dentist, that's pretty rare. Front desk is average (again, better than cranky which is what I usually encounter), but the hygienists are some of the happiest people I've ever met in my life. Funny too. I take good care of my teeth, but my husband wasn't the best for a while. When he went in, he was expecting a huge lecture, but they said they don't do that there - they don't think shaming helps anyone. He came out a changed man. Now he loves going too. The highlight is Dr. S himself. He's super caring and interesting too. Sometimes he does the cleanings himself. One time he even made the "appointment reminder call" to come in too - that was a first. That's probably why his staff is so happy - he's not above doing anything. As other people have mentioned, he doesn't push procedures on you either if they're not urgent. He might say, "Let's get that filled within the next 6 months or so..." not "you're going to lose your teeth if you don't do this tomorrow." I really appreciate that. I guess the only downside is the wait it takes to get in, but "believe me ya'll, he's worth it." read more

Who likes going to the dentist? Well I have been through a couple since moving to DC 7 years ago. One was great; except he was always busy and would push you off to the "new guy" in the office. Another had an annoying hygienist who wasn't friendly at all. However; after reading all the great reviews on Yelp; I tried Francis Surprenant. I thought I had a cavity; as I had some pain in my jaw. He fit me into his busy schedule and did a full exam. As it turns out; I was fine and he did a routine cleaning. His staff is quite friendly and I like that he seems to be very hands on - not passing you off to someone else. read more

I had a very good experience at this dental office. I have been looking for a dentist in DC for some time and I am very glad that my search is over. Here are some of the things I liked: - Very sweet, very pleasant hygienist who genuinely seemed to enjoy her job. She gave me excellent tips and didn't try to scare me into purchasing extra services. - Compared with my previous experiences, I thought the hygienist did a great job with the cleaning. She really took her time and my teeth feel great. - After the cleaning, I briefly saw Dr. Supernant who examined my teeth. He thought everything looked good. Again, no hyperbolic.. "your teeth are going to fall out unless you spend $500 this instant." So that was much appreciated. - They do accept several insurance plans, which makes things that much more convenient. I did have to wait about 20 mins, but my experience was definitely quite good overall. They will be seeing me again. read more

Dr. Surprenant is a fantastic dentist, as other yelpers have said. My wife and I have recommended him to a dozen or so friends, and they all concur with the good review! I went to Dr. Surprenant after a post-college hiatus of a few years from dentistry. (One of those where the longer you wait, the more fearful you are of going to the dentist). On my first visit, he was completely pleasant, non-judgmental, just went in and saw the cavities that I had, and then talked through the steps for getting them filled and preventing some additional trouble spots from turning into cavities. Several years later, I'm a regular and haven't had a single additional cavity! His chair-side manner is fantastic, and he doesn't push you to purchase special treatments. He does all cleanings and exams personally, and clearly explains terms and concerns. If you're looking for a dentist, I can't recommend him highly enough! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Surprenant for almost a year now and it has by far been the best dental experience of my life. I went to Dr. Surprenant for a second opinion after my dentist told me I needed a root canal and a crown on a tooth that she had filled the year before. The bad news is Dr. Surprenant confirmed that I did in fact need the root canal and crown. The good news is Dr. Surprenant was very kind and thorough in his explanation of what I needed to do for the procedures. I made it through them without any issue I have been coming to him ever since. He is now my primary dentist and I could not be more thrilled. I would never have thought I would have said this but I really enjoy going to the dentist now. Everyone on staff is friendly and courteous and truly make your experience as pleasant as possible. A+++ office!! read more

Dr. Surprenant is "simply the best. Better than all the rest" that I have had in the past. I have never, in my entire life, had a dentist do the cleaning of my teeth himself. Instead, it has always been done by a dental assistant. How refreshing. His staff is friendly, the office environment is comfortable and the entire operation is very efficiently but caringly run. So I went to this place based on cross checking the dentists that took my insurance, with those near my work, with yelp reviews, and was super disappointed. I made my appointment in January for May. I joked when I made the appointment that I hoped my teeth would not fall out by then. So to cut to the chase: The Good: I was in and out in an hour for my basic cleaning by the hygenist and quick look over by the Dentist. The Bad: The dental assistant wanted to take my xrays and I told her that I couldn't because my insurance didn't cover that but I would do all that when it was open season and I would add a dental plan. The hygenist then came in and gave me a lecture on how she needed to do xrays otherwise nothing would be effective, I again said no. She went on and on, at this point my smile was gone because I felt scolded. The dental assistant came back in to say that bitewing xrays were only 125 or 65 with my insurance, I again declined. So 15 minutes later she started cleaning my teeth, then was done in about 20 minutes. Again, she told me about xrays, I then told her more personal information and told her that I just couldn't afford it right now. I waited for a while for the dentist. When he came in, he acted like he was angry at me. He asked me when the last time I had xrays, name, date, time. At this point, I wanted to leave and bring my former dentists to defend me. I got another lecture on the importance of xrays. He made motions like he couldn't hear me or understand me. I really felt like he was racist and classist. He did a pretty crappy job, and I'm glad I only had a cleaning by one of the hygenists in that office. And to top it off, I had to pay $132 for the cleaning when I left. So this place is probably okay - unless your a single mother with 100K+ in student loans from grad and law schools. read more

I scheduled with Dr. Surprenant on the recommendation of a coworker, and I'm very glad I did. To be honest, the lack of website and inclusion of cosmetic dentistry in the name had me concerned that they would try to up-sell me on things my insurance wouldn't cover. However, none of that occurred. They have you turn in your medical forms 2 days before your appointment, so the day of you simply show up and get started. The dental assistant explained every step of the process, including how often each type of x-ray is performed. Dr. Surprenant is very friendly, and also explained everything (e.g. what he's looking for on your x-rays and why). He even recommended some over the counter whitening products I can try before deciding if I want to get my teeth professionally whitened. 4/5 stars because the cleaning was a tad rough compared to my past dentist (but maybe that's just me being sad my old dentist retired!). read more

Went to Dr. Suprenant for a basic check up and ended up with a cracked wisdom tooth. He filled a cavity (which I'm not even sure was there) on my wisdom tooth and ended up drilling too deeply and cracking the tooth. Now it hurts every time I bite down on it. I went back to him a few times to figure out what the problem was, and he claimed there was nothing wrong and just to deal with it. I would not recommend going to Dr. Suprenant. read more

A few months ago I had a toothache and I decided it was time to find a dentist. After a bad experience by picking a doctor at random from my insurance provider list I turned to Yelp for dentists. I was intrigued that Dr. Surprenant had a perfect 5 star rating- it seems like he's the only one on Yelp to have that distinction. So I checked my provider listing and to my surprise he was listed! So I call and make an appointment. I was disappointed at how long I had to wait to get in but understandably he's a busy guy making all these Yelpers happy. The staff is incredibly friendly and they emailed me the new patient paperwork so I wouldn't have to waste time at the office filling it out. The office is clean and I love all of the new technology and gadgets he has from the digital xrays to the TV and music in the chair. It makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. And Dr. Surprenant himself is an incredibly nice and personable doctor. He is always eager to explain what he is doing and why he is doing it. I learned from him how the Novocaine works and and how the sealant works on cavities. He is simply the best dentist I have ever seen. read more

Dr. Surprenant is great. I have been going to him for 5+ years. The number of weeks/months in advance that you have to schedule an appointment speaks volumes to the number of people that love this dentist. However, his receptionist is rude. I was treated poorly by her yesterday and unfortunately this was not the first or second time. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and the fact I see her twice a year allows me to easily forget she exists after a short encounter. However, yesterday I was emotionally raw and she was the tipping point. Given this was not the first time, I do not plan to go back and would likely not recommend others. Great experience! I am a new patient that just went for my first cleaning and Xrays. The staff was friendly and organized. I showed up early and was taken back even before my appointment time. My whole appointment, from the moment I walked in the front door until I left, took 40 minutes, and that included X-rays. Dr. Surprenant did all of the cleaning himself. He was very good. He walked me through each X-ray, telling me what he looks for. I appreciate that kind of information. I picked him based on all of the positive Yelp reviews. I was not disappointed. I'm not great at flossing, so I usually get a lecture when i go to the dentist. Surprenant did a nice job of reminding me I need to floss more while still treating me like an adult. That was a nice change. The only part of the experience that was less than 5 star was trying to get an appointment as a new patient. I had to call back once a week until they had an open slot. But I'm glad I did. read more
