Dr. Kham's dental practice has been a blessing and a wonderful experience for the most part. I really appreciate how easy it was to get all set up in their practice as a new patient. X-rays were fast, and cleanings are very straightforward. I enjoyed the 3D technology that the office used to show me my teeth, with a variety of filters to highlight the various aspects of dental health. When I first went there, the hygenist recommended that I see the dentist more often, which was quite contradictory to what the last dentist I went to had said. At my previous dentist, they said my teeth were amazing - whereas here, there were lots of issues they could identify. I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed like they were trying to get me to visit more often and pay out of pocket for appointments (insurance will only cover a certain number of appointments each year). This isn't as much of an issue anymore, as I have gone back to my usual appointment schedule of twice a year. Having said that, the care I've received at this office has been wonderful. Dr. Kham is great at explaining concepts to patients, and he and his team are very thorough when it comes to explaining how you can best take care of your teeth. The folks behind the front desk are always very kind and helpful, too. Scheduling is always a breeze, as is checking out when I'm done with an appointment. Overall, Dr. Kham is a great dental practice that most people will appreciate and enjoy! read more

The cleaning/annual checkup is fine, but they are not transparent about insurance and they either flat out lied to me or told me something they didn't know the answer to (instead of telling me to check with insurance). Essentially, I had a question about insurance coverage before my appointment and instead of telling me the correct answer about what was covered, or telling me to contact my insurance, they told me the wrong answer and I now have to pay out of pocket (not a huge sum, but their handling of this infuriates me). After I received the bill, I called them to inquire and instead of admitting it was their mistake and forgiving the charge (in which case I probably would've just paid out of pocket for future visits to avoid having to find a new dentist), they said there was a "miscommunication." read more

Let me start by saying I have had extensive dental work done--fillings, crowns and rootcanals so this review is not by someone who just gets their teeth cleaned. I used to go to Dr. Schnieder who retired and found Dr. Kham here. I went in for my first appointment during covid-I had cleaning and full set of xrays done. I was pleasantly surprised how extremely clean the office was, and the equipment was very modern. The hygienists and doctor were very friendly. Dr. Kham went over my xrays and did my cleaning-all seemed very sanitary and I liked him a lot. He was very matter of fact about my extensive dental work and wasn't trying to get me to do anything major. We decided one of my teeth needed a crown and I had a filling that was lost. I made an appointment for 2 weeks later which was easy. They let me know exactly how much it was going to cost me based on my insurance and I went home with all the info. Awesome! So the day the work was done Dr. gives me numbing gel and goes to shoot his novocaine in and holy mother of all mothers, I saw stars. Never in the probably 100 shots I've gotten has one hurt so extremely bad. Like involuntary crying happening. I calmed down and he tested and I wasn't numb yet so he gave me more. They were very positive through the procedure, but there were some painful points but they just kept telling me I was doing great and continued. I left and that night my temp crown cracked.. They were very kind about fixing it and fit me in quickly. Understand that my tooth is down to the nerve and he started going to pull at it with the metal tool and it hurt so bad I almost died.. I had to firmly ask him to stop and he seemed surprised. I asked him to numb me up-it was too painful and he finally did. He put a new temporary on and I left. I can't remember exactly but I'm 99% sure that temporary crown broke too or something else happened and I had to go back but maybe I'm wrong. ANyways Time came to install my permanent crown and I had to ask again to please numb me.. He put it on and also shaved down a tooth that he said was pointy. I left very numb. Again, super super nice staff. I went back 2 weeks later because my tooth was still in so much pain and my bite felt really off. At that point he looked and said all looks fine on his end and handed me referral slips for an endodontist in case it kept bothering me. The pain finally subsided thank god but my bite felt so wrong. I don't know if it was the tooth he shaved down or the crown was too low but its no good. So today I had another appointment for a cleaning and figured I'd talk to him about my bite. I made the appointment because I couldn't take it anymore, my bite has felt so off ever since he put this crown on-my teeth shifted and my jaw feels like it's in the wrong spot. He came over to look in my mouth at the end of the cleaning real quick and I told him about my bite and he just handed me a referral to go see an orthodontist that may be able to help me. I felt very dismissed and was hoping he could talk to me a few minutes about my options. Do I think this is a bad place to go? No, I don't. The office is very clean, the staff is super nice but I wouldn't get more than general work done here--maybe even a small filling. I personally think the doctor needs to think a bit more about keeping patients comfortable rather than cheerleading you while inflicting pain. I understand a bad shot of novocaine, but to cause me pain each time I went was too much and to have to go back 5 times over a crown was ridiculous. read more

Finally submitting a review for Dr. Kham after almost four years as his patient. I enjoy every visit, as much as one can enjoy any doctor's visit. He has earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence amongst my friends and colleagues--one positive review turned to two turned to four turned to seemingly half of my (very large) former office going to see him. As others have said, Dr. Kham is kind and genuinely cares for his patients. He always takes the time to talk me through each procedure needed, and his office is transparent if there is something my insurance won't fully cover (e.g., fluoride treatments). When one of the hygienists (whose name I am embarrassed not to remember right now) noticed that I had micro chips on two teeth, she took the time to show me in a mirror how these evidenced grinding and recommend a mouth guard. Dr. Kham was able to file down and fix the chips in that same appointment. The hygienist also noticed that I had new insurance and had previously thought about Invisalign, so got a new quote for me--miracle of miracles, it's now 1/4 the price, and I'm going for it. Relatedly, I trust Dr. Kham's referrals. I had to get a gum graft, and Dr. Kham recommended Dr. Abron at DC Perio & Implants. I was genuinely pleased with that experience too--Dr. Abron adjusted his schedule to perform my gum graft the same day, after confirming that I needed one at my initial consult. He then called that evening to check in on how I was doing after the graft. This is probably something I should note in a review for that business, but wanted to share here too, because I have had plenty of doctors refer me to the specialist down the hall just because they're down the hall, apparently not caring about their performance. Not Dr. Kham. As a final note, it is meaningful to me that Dr. Kham seems to care about not just patients' dental health, but also their personal life and wellbeing. When I started at the practice, I mentioned a friend who had referred me. Dr. Kham asked after my friend for the next several appointments, knowing he'd recently relocated to a new city. And I've made a few career transitions while I've been a patient of Dr. Kham's. He always remembers and asks about my new work. That sort of human to human connection is what makes his practice really special. read more

Good dentist and service, but the billing/insurance issues were frustrating. They were listed as in-network with my insurance, but their clinic addresses don't line up (different address in person than on list), so everything processes as out-of-network. I thought this was a mistake (and who would notice the different address when the name is the same), so I explained the situation to the dentist's front desk staff. I tried explaining more than once, but they didn't update their listing with the insurance provider, so I wound up having to pay out-of-network. Also, I was told a fluoride treatment would be covered when it wasn't, and I didn't have anything in writing so I had to pay. read more

Dr. Kham is heaven sent. Honestly, I've been putting off going to the dentist for YEARS (I won't tell you because I don't need that kind of judgement) frankly because I'm scared to death of dental care. After scrolling through Yelp, I found Dr. Kham and saw all the 5 star reviews. The office is convenient enough so I figured I'll give it a try. I called to make an regular check up appointment and was told I couldn't get in for a couple weeks. The lady was very kind and explained she'll let me know of any cancellations so I can come in sooner. Literally a couple hours later, she calls me back and says I can come in the next day! Nice! So I book a Friday appointment. The office was easy to find. The staff were super personable, fun, and eased down my anxiety. I was offered water or coffee while I filled out paperwork. I waited for maybe 2 mins (so fast!!!) and was taken to the back to do X-Rays. Dr. Kham explained every detail to me, he explained I would need fillings (anyone surprised? Remember it's been years haha) and even showed me my cavity. I liked him so much, after my Friday appointment, I booked my filling appointment for the upcoming Monday! Again, Dr. Kham walked through every step of the filling, letting me know of any pressure that would come. My fillings took about 35 mins and I was out the door, feeling numb but thankful it didn't hurt one bit!! So yeah folks, take it from someone who has already been in twice in one week. Everything from the location, the staff, the cleanliness, friendliness, and of course the overall Dr. experience. This place deserves much more than 5 stars. read more

Best dentist I've ever had. Dr. Kham did five cavity fillings for me and a gum treatment. He was kind, thorough, and extremely attentive. He immediately noticed the issue with my gums without me prompting him (I'd asked two previous dentists about it and they both dismissed the issue). He also treated an infection I had around a wisdom tooth for free. He'd still be my dentist if I hadn't left D.C. The office is also great, and the staff are friendly, organized and responsive. He is thorough, explains what he is doing every step of the way, and is more than happy to sit with his patients to understand and address any questions or concerns. From my first appt. which was a checkup and cleaning, to a filling that I requested based on my history, he has been nothing short of extraordinary. On top of that, he has an incredible staff who are equally as kind, caring, and professional. I can only recommend his office and services. He is my new dentist until he moves or I move. Some of the best care I've ever received. With all the horrible, inefficient, overpriced medical care out there, the waiting 45 min for an appointment, the "oops we sent your labs to an out-of-network provider," etc., when you stumble upon a wonderful medical provider and attentive and friendly receptionist to boot, you just want to hug them! I started with Dr. Kham before he had his own practice. I came to him after having a horrible experience with Washington Elite Dentistry that is the subject of another review :). An extremely knowledgeable, caring, patient-focused doctor who is not at all out to make a buck off you, and knows how to tell you when you need to up your oral hygiene game (not speaking from personal experience or anything, my teeth are bangin). Been seeing Dr. Kham for two years now and am still so grateful I found him. It's a relief to have such a friendly, gentle dentist who answers all my questions! This place is so considerate -- they even give you protective glasses before cleanings so nothing splashes in your eyes, and they put chapstick on your lips before starting so your lips don't dry out uncomfortably while they work! What more could you possibly want from a dentist?!?! In addition to this, I'm having SO many less fillings done than before -- he said that instead of drilling immediately, more modern practice is to monitor a potential cavity over 6-12 months to see if the spot is worsening before immediately drilling. I really appreciate this, because my last dentist was starting to make my teeth feel like swiss cheese. Finally, I take my night guard with me every time I visit, and they clean and disinfect it for me and Dr. Kham tests the fit to make sure it's still good. Even though my night guard is very chipped and banged up after years of use, Dr. Kham is like, "Well, it's still doing what it needs to," and never pressures me to get a new one if it's not necessary. The procedure was literally over before I knew it and I woke up the next morning without any pain - I was shocked. His explanations are always great - he walks you through everything he does. Dr. Kham has been my dentist for over 2 years now. I feel so lucky to have found him. He's the only dentist/doctor I've had who carefully walks me through my options, and is honest about the trade-offs and costs associated. For example, I went through the Invisalign process with him because he was careful to explain what I needed to do to see results, was easy to schedule appointments with, and he's a perfectionist, so I knew it would be done well (and it was!). Even after Invisalign, my visits to the office are quick, easy, and I am always greeted by the staff. It is telling when the dentist does most of the cleanings. My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Kham for four years first at Daniel Cave & Associates and now at his new practice- Washington DC Dentistry. His new office is conveniently located less than a 5 minute walk from the Foggy Bottom metro station. Dr. Kham leads the teeth cleaning process and takes time to explain all necessary steps. Terrible experience. On my first appointment they chipped my tooth. When I came on for a follow up appointment to get it fixed they made messed up my other teeth so of course I now have to get them fixed or cleaned. They are try to scam you into getting additional cleanings that cost $200+. I'm going to report this dentist because he clearly is just in it for the money!!! read more
