Currently, it's an office building with a theater showing Broadway quality shows, and some shops and restaurants on the ground floor. One of the most recognizable sights on Detroit's skyline, the building is also known as "The Golden Tower." The original gold-leaf tiles on the tower were covered with asphalt during WWII for fear of bombing. Following the war the damaged gold tiles were replaced with green terra cotta tiles that are illuminated gold at night.

I visited the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House with my parents this past weekend, and we had an amazing…read morevisit. The home was built by/for Edsel and Eleanor Ford (Edsel was the son of Henry Ford), completed in 1928. It's a historic house, but the property offers so much more than, too. The house was designed by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn (earlier in the day, we had walked by a past a mural that read "We Kahn Do It" - that's how famous Albert Kahn is in Detroit). It is an example of the English Cotswold style of architecture, and Kahn and the Fords found and purchased pieces from historic English home (antique wood paneling, fireplaces, stained glass, etc.). The home is incredible. There are several ways to enjoy the property. You can purchase grounds admission only to walk and explore the grounds. You can also purchase a self-guided tour or guided tour of the home, both of which include grounds access. We did the guided tour, and I'm glad we did. We learned a lot about the Fords, the home, their art collection (the home has some originals and some copies - the originals of which have since been gifted to the DIA or other museums), and more. Our tour guide was lovely - informative and friendly. Our tour was for a late Friday afternoon, so we were a total of 5 (2 people in addition to my family group). After our guided tour, we wandered around the grounds a bit. There are incredible views of Lake St. Clair, sculptures, a swimming pool, a lagoon, the children's playhouse, a power house, and more. The property isn't huge, but there is a shuttle that will take you from the visitor center to the house, if you need a lift. The visitor center is beautiful and offers some exhibition space, a beautiful restaurant where saw lots of people enjoying a meal or some wine (The Continental), a grab and go option for people without time for a meal (Speedster), and a very nice giftshop. I had only been to Detroit once before, and I didn't get a chance to visit the Grosse Pointe area of the city last time. The house is in Grosse Pointe Shores, and I even loved the drive out to the house - you pass such beautiful homes (mansions?)! We had a wonderful visit at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House. I highly recommend it if you're interested in neo-English architecture, historic homes, the Ford family... or if you just want to visit somewhere incredibly beautiful within 20 minutes of downtown Detroit!

Tours are $20 and you're welcome to walk the grounds after, plus stop by the Playhouse (tiny house that was for the Ford's 7-year-old granddaughter) and the garage, where five antique vehicles are housed. The tour lasts an hour, our tour guide was Dan and he was great. My husband works for Ford so I thought he'd find the tour interesting, too. There's another tour, called Nooks and Crannies, that dives deeper into the house and it's history, and I'd like to take that one next. The grounds themselves are beautiful and there is a lot to see, including the displays in the Visitors Center, Bird Island, and the places I mentioned above. The Visitors Center also has a gift shop. I've heard they do concerts here in the summer, and I saw on Instagram that they will have a butterfly house, too, so I'll have to come back another time for that. Overall, I really enjoyed Ford House and hope to come back for the other tour at some point too.

The Packard plant was opened in 1903 and at the time was considered the most modern automobile manufacturing facility in the world, with skilled craftsmen involved in over eighty trades. The factory complex closed in 1958. Considering it's been empty for 60 years it's structure is still solid. There's so much revitalization happening in Detroit I hope at least part of this big beautiful structure is repurposed. I haven't done the Pure Detroit tour yet but I hope to do so this summer. I was respectful of the No Trespassing signs and aware of the potential danger of entering unsafe buildings so my wandering was limited to the parameters only, but I really wanted to do inside some of those buildings!!!

This unique landmark standing in the median of Hall Rd. between Hayes and Schoenherr in the Golden…read moreCorridor of Sterling Heights has become the talk of the town by both the locals and visitors to our area. From its early beginnings when some were scratching their heads at the thought of this round object sitting in the median and then finally it's construction, it has become a conversation piece as it's sits along the busy thoroughfare. It's definitely growing on the residents who drive past it everyday. At night it is illuminated in colorful hues of purple/pink or blue and during the holidays, in green and red. It's even referenced in some Pure Michigan spoofs, as being called "The Golden Butthole". Although some have said it's an eyesore and would only consider it worthy of one star, others say it's kind of quirky, which would bump it up to two. The title of 'unofficial' landmark could possibly qualify it for three. Having our own conversation piece in the middle of one of the busiest thoroughfares, bumps it up to four. Last but not least, some would say it's originality and uniqueness is worthy of five stars. So, as expected opinions differ widely. While some remain neutral on how they feel, others either love it or hate it. In fact, it's sometimes the 'butt' of jokes and others 'pooh pooh' the design. However you look at it, it's here to stay and it's ours to embrace. I choose to look on the positive side, especially in today's uncertain world. It stands strong and proud as it grabs the attention of everyone driving past. Beauty is and always will be in the eye of the 'behole-der'. Check out the other Pure Michigan spoofs on YouTube. Sterling Heights isn't alone in it's head tilting, eyebrow raising piece of art. But we can definitely say for sure that it's home to a 'golden' ring surrounded by 'Sterling' (Heights). It is a non-profit organization, always looking for a helping hand. They were closed the other day when I visited. This location is run solely by volunteers, and had no signs with hours of operation. Ah, but during my visit, a couple of the volunteers happened to stop by and gave me information about the organization. I took a brief walk around the well manicured grounds and found that they have a farm museum, carriage house, root cellar, smoke house, summer kitchen, school house and of course, the Wisner Mansion. While I was there, I shot a picture of the historical marker which is prominently displayed close to the roadway. Their next big event is an Ice Cream Social on 26 JUL 2014 and it promises to be a great time. Hours of operation are 11am - 4pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, library included. A historical home that is maintained and cared for by a very kind group of women. They open to the…read morepublic every second Saturday of the month and may open more frequently than that - you can check their schedule posted on their website. The women will welcome and offer you a tour of the home or you can simply shop in their second hand vintage "store" in a dedicated room. They sell items both old and a couple new. The items are fairly priced but I still ended up passing on a beautiful gravy boat with a tray and I will regret it forever haha. They very welcoming to littles and offered a cookie after our permission. Just such a thoughtful gesture. They also have a restroom in case needed. In the back of the house there's a cabin from the late 1800's with a tombstone. The energy was really great so that's always nice. Definitely worth visit, even if you just have a few minutes. The house itself is very unique and beautiful. They are donation based but are not pushy whatsoever.

I am a truck driver. staff is rude and people who are…read moreunloading/loading me take extremely long time. they don't care about your time or your logbook. you can tell they're protected by the union and don't give a crap about the drivers. I hate coming here. every time I'm here I'm waiting between 2-4 hrs. while the staff stands around and talks. they make you sit and wait until they're done loading you. however they don't even have bathrooms. such a unprofessional environment. they should be reported and make bathrooms for drivers especially if they want us to wait for hrs every time. By far the worst place I deliver to.

It's open to the public, so I just peeked inside the entrance and was awed by the curved ceilings and majestic pillars. You can tell that you are standing under a canopy of automotive history. Driving downtown you can't miss it, it looks like great glass towers emerging from the pavement.

The former Clerk building has been transformed to a museum and is part of the Clinton Township Historical Village, a group of small historical centers in Clinton Township. The Moravian Hall hall museum is an 1880's building housing artifacts and information on the history of Clinton Township (such as locks from the nearby Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal), and the 1850's Williams Log Cabin, newly-refurbished as a living history museum. Inside, it's a small one storey flat and many of the artifacts are encased. There is no fee to enter and it will take anywhere from 5-40 minutes depending on how interested you are in local history.
