Then a postcard arrived from our trash company, CR&R listing nine hazardous waste drop offs, with MDS being the only one to accept smoke alarms. I did a Google map and headed on down. The receptionist was friendly and helpful and took those old alarms right away. Kudos to MDS for being willing to accept these items, especially since MDS is a commercial recycler. Their willingness to deal with Joe Public Small Fry is appreciated. And did I mention there was no charge?

I had an old Sears sewing machine that weighs a ton - likely because it was built like a tank, all metal and with heavy metal parts! It's hard to find a place within 10 miles that would take it! I found Jake's number on yelp and I called around 7:30 one evening, and to my surprise, he personally answered the phone! How rare is that these days! I arranged a time with him, and dropped off several heavy metal items. It was easy. He also took a lot of E waste items, such as power bars, extension, cords, etc., etc. He operates out of his residence, and the location in Westchester is very convenient for people who live on the west side. Compared to the large metal recycling facilities, where you may have to drive through piles of trash or meander through a wasteland, I feel his location is easier and safer for me! I'm very happy to have found his service, and I would definitely recommended to people on the west side.

The place talks about some sort of "Nerd Candy" shop or something similar, which makes you think it's the business next door... but it's not. So you go in and ask about the "Nerd Candy", and if they sell candy at the tech recycling shop, but... it's just the name of their company. Then you walk back out the door and see that the same company has TWO different signs out front for TWO company names, but it's both in the same doorway and building. Finally, there's a sign that says "drop offs, use the back entrance" but this makes it sound like if you have an appointment to drop something off and leave with no explanation, you should use the back entrance, and as I had no appointment, I used the front entrance, which I got told to use the back entrance for. Better wording, like "if you have an appointment, use this entrance, if you don't, use the back" would make far more sense, but this is also a place that calls itself a brand name that sounds exactly like a candy shop at the same time as it sounds like a recycling shop. But the actual job they do, they did immaculately. No complaints there.

The staff were really friendly and helped me unload everything, which made the process even smoother. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes, which I definitely didn't expect. I volunteered to get my mom's old PC tower hard drive crushed so that there would be no chance of…read moreher information being stolen off of it. BB also had some papers/documents she wanted shredded. We came here on a weekend, and found a spot in the lot (in front of a very old non-operational car). The streets were lined up with cars so it seems like it would be challenging to find a street parking spot. A car was actually waiting for us to leave because there was no other parking. Anyway, when I walked towards the back of the lot where the business is located, a friendly young man approached us with a big smile and asked how he could be of service. We told him we needed the hard drive physically destroyed, the rest of the PC tower recycled, and the documents/papers shredded. He brought out a hydraulic press type of equipment and crushed the hard drive in front of us. He also took the PC tower and placed it with a bunch of other electronic equipment which was slated to be recycled. Finally he took the documents and placed them into a locking trash type container. BB wanted to witness the document destruction but he stated that they don't offer that service. From seeing the whole operation, I felt confident that the documents would be secure until shredding (he stated it happens once weekly). The total cost for this was a meager 15 dollars. We paid and were on our way. Will definitely be back if we need to recycle electronics in the future!
