Wanted to try a new place for lunch - I have been wanting to go to the "new" Franka for a while so it seemed like a great option after attending some of my mom's doctor's appointments across the street. We arrived early, at 11am sharp, and wasn't actually sure they were open.. It was empty and we were about to pivot our plans to St. Kilda next door. Anyways, they were open and I was happy to see the lunch crowd did arrive closer to noon. The vibe/decor is very scandinavian and cool. I ordered their Salmon sandwich which was really good. It came with their salt and pepper fries plus aioli (I would prefer the aioli had more flavor). My mom ordered one of the specials, shrimp scampi pizza. It looked tasty (I am a sucker for a good white sauce pie these days!) and though I didn't try it, she said it was good. All of the pizzas are personal pans. Make note: They also have breakfast pizza on the menu! I enjoyed my experience and plan to come back to try the pizza myself. But a few cons - It is a little pricey, especially for lunch. I was pretty surprised with some of the bad reviews I saw here. I've been to Franka several times. My salads were always delicious and I like their dressing! The pizzas are creative and the right-size portion in my opinion. It's the only place in town I can have something different than the cheese/pepperoni standards... over the summer, the burrata white pizza, and the smoked artichoke were just amazing! I hope they come back when the ingredients are back in season. The pasta of the season/week was always good. I definitely recommend this place! But if you are a Dominos (big meals) type of person, I can see you not enjoying Franka.... Nothing wrong with either, just different styles and experience. read more

Located near 60th and University in a tucked away strip is Franka Pizzeria. It looks similar to the former Red Rosa pizza of a few years ago. It has an open seating area with a full bar which was kind of surprise. I ordered the meatball pizza which generally disappointed as it wasn't very crispy as one would expect, the sauce didn't go all the way to the edge and toppings were scant. For an all in price of $17 I expected more. However my dining companions got the sandwiches which looked pretty good. If you are going to be a pizzeria then the pizza better be knockout good which this wasn't. read more

I'm really shocked at the negative reviews I've read. This place is awesome and the pizza and food are outstanding. Our family loves the food here. We are a family of 5 and my youngest who turns 11 this month just picked Franka for his birthday dinner. What I don't think most people understand here is the pizza is wood fired neapolitan, and if your looking for traditional heavy cheese, toppings and thicker crust then you might be disappointed. Also this is a fairly nice restaurant and your not going to get Pappa Murphy's prices. I'm seeing some others rave about the non-pizza items so for that reason I may go back and give it another go. I was not overly enthusiastic about the pizza and I've had several Neapolitan-style pizzas. It just didn't have that "wow" factor for me nor could I justify the price for such a small amount of food. Same with the appetizer, very small portions. However, the pros were a gorgeous interior. For a late night meal, this place has the cozy, romantic atmosphere down. One and Done. Party of two on a Sunday afternoon. At no time were we greeted; we were asked for the number of people in our party - but no "Hello!" When we were brought our glasses of tepid water, we were asked if we wanted anything else to drink, and the waiter wandered off aimlessly after we refused without another word. We were given a pair of plates and had to stop him from wandering off aimlessly to place our order - two appetizers, one white pizza with fresh corn and mozzarella. After a lengthy wait, our pizza arrived - sans appetizers. We asked, and one appetizer appeared; asked after the second and he went back and got it. Could the waiter have been more disinterested? As for the food... it was as engaged and interesting as the staff. Pizza was underdone to the point that the mozz wasn't melted. Sweet potato fries had been tossed in cornstarch to make the outside crispy, but if I closed my eyes I wouldn't have been able to tell you what it was. The crostini with the spinach & artichoke dip was the highlight of the meal for me - good, crispy, buttery crostini. It was too bad the artichoke and the spinach hadn't been more than vaguely introduced to the cheese in the dip - if I didn't have a chunk of either in the bite, it was just cheese dip. read more

They were not very generous with the mozzarella. More than I care to pay for lunch with added fees for using debit card. My husband and I went to Franka in clive for brunch yesterday and had a fantastic time. We dined at the bar and got to watch all the pizzas be made in the wood fire stove which really added to the ambiance. We started with the Brussels sprouts which were perfectly cooked and just the right kind of crispy, great flavor! We then had breakfast pizza and the pancakes; WOW! Perfectly cooked and loved the breakfast sausage on the pizza as well. I added arugula and it was so fresh and tasted amazing. The pancakes were light and fluffy and the lemon was the perfect touch. My husband had two of the cocktails and really enjoyed them both (spicy marg and red hook). It has a very cool atmosphere and very similar to the modern and contemporary feel of the St. Kilda establishments. We were well taken care of by the staff and would recommend this place! My family came for a birthday dinner. The atmosphere is a nice update from the prior restaurant. The meatball pizza was delicious. The pizza is Neapolitan style (thin crust, bubbled and crispy on the edges, softer in the middle), so please be aware of what to expect. Also, if you order a pizza with roasted garlic on it, be prepared for whole cloves roasted garlic. The house salad vinaigrette didn't quite live up to my hopes when it was described as a parmesan vinaigrette, but I'd never had that before, and it was fine. Service was good. We were looking forward to a delightful experience, what we got was a two pizzas with NO cheese. I mean, seriously. The peperoni was very greasy. And the salad was miniscule with unpalatable dressing. We ordered a side of fries with aioli - which one would do well to avoid. Let's be frank, it was mayo with maybe ketchup. The decor is nice, looks clean, and staff friendly. However, even after dessert, we felt like we hadn't eaten. I visited Franka in Clive last night around 730 I ordered the mushroom grilled cheese sandwich which was amazing ! It came with a salad so I told the waiter I'd like creamy parm dressing and no tomatoes ! When it came it had vinegarette dressing on it and there were tomatoes in it. I brought it to his attention and he brought me another salad that also had vinaigrette dressing on it then he gave me a teeny tiny side of creamy Parmesan that was barely enough to cover a few leaves of the enormous portion of salad but I just sucked it up and ate it. We also ordered a pizza! Worse pizza I have ever had in my life. The sauce tasted rancid and was very limp and tasteless!! now as for the service! Very very poor ! He never came back to ask how our food was and we had to flag him down to get his attention (due to him messing with his cell phone) to ask for a coffee refill ! BTW folks. You don't get coffee refills here for a plain black coffee you get charged $2.50 per refill ! NEVER Again !!!!!! read more

I hate to give this place a bad review because it is owned by A Australian and I consider Australia to be by far our greatest ally but the FACT is this place is not worth trying right now. After getting my first pizza here that was cooked well and had the toppings I ordered I have yet to get a pizza cooked to the same point. Like most places in Iowa they are rushing and not cooking the pizzas to the same point. I have made 3 trips to this place and have gotten what I ordered 1 time. Let them work out the bugs (And employees) and try it in a couple of months. Like most places in Iowa you can't count on them being open to the time posted on the door so call ahead. Most of the staff seem to have the personality of the boards used to slide the pizzas in the oven. After discussing the wrong order and undercooked pizza with the manager Jasmin I can say she simply did not seem to care but after waiting 40 minutes for a to-go order and hearing numerous calls from customers with complaints I can see her not being happy to talk about another bad order but yet after many reviews saying they had under cooked pizza she wanted to argue that it was the way they were suppose to be. Jasmin's trick is she says she can't hear you so keep this in mind if you call and complain it will be a waist of time as she will not even go where it is quiet to talk. If it was me I would install a electronically actuated door this way the cooks cannot pull the pizzas early. Automation is the only thing that will save Iowa restaurants from Iowa cooks! We will not be back to this place but I have watched way to many Iowa restaurants fail. Iowa has a really high restaurant failure rate and we do not even have all the $10 pizza chains like Mod Pizza, Pie Five, and 18 others that many states have. The pizza was actually better when this place was Red Rossa Pizza! I give Iowa restaurants enough WELFARE for food that cooks in other places could make better on the engine of a pickup! Pennsylvania has the best pizza places (sorry New York) and 1 of my favorite is in King of Prussia. read more

Went there for dinner, our second time there. I had family in from out of town and wanted to take them there. We had a reservation and got seated right away. We placed our drink order and asked for a bottle of wine. The waiter came back and said they only had enough for 1 glass ( on a Saturday night). We then place our order for appetizer and meal. The appetizer came out in a reasonable amount of time, but then we sat there for an hour and half waiting for our meal. No one came by to apologize for the delay or explanation for the delay. We finally got our which was good. We were very disappointed in the service. Our server didn't even take anything off. Of course this happens when you take out of town guests out to eat. Over priced, bad service, two different people waited on us throughout our dinner. Food was cold with a limited menu. Costs were not transparent...each 8 oz. glass of tea is $3, 3% of bill charged if using debit or credit card, and when We asked about an unexplained "other food" line item of $1 charged they said it wasn't included on the total bill, but only if you don't use math or a calculator.
