I haven't been here in years and really wanted to love it but the food fell short. It was very busy on a Friday night and service was pleasant despite being able to tell they were short staffed and running around with their heads cut off. They need to staff for the tables with servers, have dedicated runners, and a few people doing drinks and salads on a weekend night like that. It has a cozy ambiance and has high potential. I don't see myself going back for the pizza alone - the toppings and sauce were good but the crust seemed like a store bought crust you can buy and make at home. Lots of running around today... We ended up at Coach's Pizza in West Glen (West Des Moines) for an early dinner. I like Coach's. It's got that local bar feel to it in an area that doesn't seem to really lean that way anymore. It just seems so commercialized out there... It's a take a seat anywhere type of place with a good menu. Pizza, apps, sandwiches, other entrees. There's self-serve fountain drinks, but I find I seldom have to get up to do it myself. The servers are always on top of it. We were greeted as we approached the bar area. Our drink orders were taken quickly and we were presented with menus. A couple minutes later we ordered a 16" (large) Hawkeye (sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, and bacon) and added mushrooms. Heather just got water, but I ordered a Coke. The pizza came out after a short wait and was piping hot. I had to use a fork for the first slice... I know I know...a cardinal sin. The crust is crisp and I wouldn't call it thin...but it's far from thick. Homestyle maybe? The sauce on our pizza was a marinara style. Thick and zesty...there's nothing subtle about it, but it's good. Similar to Corigliano's or Rocky's Pizza (a pizza I grew up on in Iowa Falls). The mushrooms were placed under the cheese so they steamed and cooked...they weren't placed on top to dry out (yay!). Total was $24 and change before tip. The tables there make it a good place for larger groups. I think all the tables are six-tops or larger. There is a bar with stool seating available too. The East entrance is not handicap accessible. There is a West side entrance and I think that one might be...so if you have a companion with a wheelchair or walker check out the West entrance before getting discouraged. Since this restaurant was sold to the people who own Wellman's the service has deteriorated significantly. We used to be weekly customers that slowly drifted to monthly, however, due to the service from the bartender tonight we will never go back. Entitled bartender who could not listen and blamed us for our order of salad and pizza. Major attitude because I asked for the correct meal that we ordered. Will never go back due to service. They have had an amazing staff in the past but have noticed when they bring people over from Wellman's the service has declined. Much better places to spend my money. Eh. I ordered a pizza to go. The pizza was made in the time they stated. I got a garden veggie pizza. The toppings and sauce are really quite good but the crust is not good at all. So many questions about thos place? What star rating do I give it? 1,2 or 3? Service was horrible. I came in before my friend and ordered a drink. i told her i was waiting for a fry. 20 minutes later, server hasn't checked back with me, my friend arrives. we wait another 20 minutes before the serve comes around, she asks if we're ready, my friend said I don't know, I haven't seen a menu or got a drink yet. In all my years of serving. I would have said oh, I need to take care of this table. but o. Next question...to order the fettuccine alfredo or the crispy chicken salad? She said everyone loves the salad. So salad it is. The salad was good, but they fill the bowl to the top and it's hard to get to the lettuce without everything else spilling out of the bowl. The chicken peices were to big to eat they needed to be cut smaller, but all I hot was a fork. I had to put my chicken on the plate that the salad bowl was served on to cut the chicken. Not sure what kind of lettuce it was but it appeared to be all peices with the big spine core through it. I don't care for that. I ate the chicken and that's about it. it was a good sized portion and it looked good in the bowl. but they need a bigger bowl and smaller cut chicken, or at must give me a knife and I'll cut it myself.Maybe this server has been threatened with a knife before, so no knifes will be used. My friends fettuccine was good. I don't find many restaurants have good fettuccine alfredo, this is good. On to questions 3. I went to the restroom, single person room. There are two rolls of TP in the holder, the one that is open and available won't turn, so you can't get TP. It won't switch over to the other roll. I can't rip any TP off the current roll. So now the question is to pee or not to pee? I need to pee and it's kinda like the running water, I GOTTA PEE! I can reach the paper towels, perfect pee. zip wonder how many women flushed their paper towels down that toilet? It took forever to pay our bill's, it's a good thing that my friend and I enjoy each others company. The future question is will we be back? Good food, terrible service. I've eaten there before and never had that bad of service, so I guess I'll probably come back. The pizza is excellent. I'll just make sure ahead of time we have adequate silverware, napkins and drinks before the food comes. So how many stars? 4 out of 5 for food, the lettuce was all cores. 1 out of 5 for service, the only way it could have gotten worse was by being rude, or never coming back. Restaurant is decorated for Christmas, very well done Christmas decor. It seemed to be clean except for the pule of TP scraps in the bathroom, where women were trying to dig out some TP off the unmoving roll. So two stars it is. I'm usually generous with my ratings, but this one I just can't condone being any better. read more

It came highly recommended to me from a guy that works nearby... and since I love pizza I figured "why not give them a try?" In addition, their specialty pizzas sounded really interesting. I ordered a couple of pizzas for carry out. The person who answered the phone was nice and my order was placed properly. They also came out of the oven just as I was walking in... I think the bartender was the person who took my order and she was very pleasant to deal with as well. There were a few people that must hang out at the bar which threw me for a bit of a loop as it seemed they were just there to drink or something, but whatever - there's a bar with stools so who am I to ask questions? It did surprise me that their tables / booths were pretty empty. Got home and was super excited to try the pizzas. I wasn't disappointed really, but it wasn't anything that wowed me either. I wish they used chunks of sausage instead of the finely ground sausage that was spread everywhere. That's s personal preference though, so if you like what I call little "gerbil turd" sausage bits, this might be for you. I've got too many other pizza spots in my rotation to try it again but I'm glad I tried it. read more

We ordered an 18" Cyclone with garlic cheese bread for pick up. The food looked great but that's where the positivity ends. After the first piece, it became readily apparent that this pizza lacks sauce. In lieu of a consistent layer of sauce, there was a layer of ground sausage that was lightly sauced. The pizza had a lot cheese but the pizza was relatively tasteless. The garlic cheese bread didn't fare any better. Moderately portioned but came up short on flavor. This was our first time ordering Coach's and it will probably be our last. How disappointing. read more

Coach's has a great hometown pizzeria feel. I had previously had Coach's pizza as take out several times and always had good pizza. Just recently we dined in the restaurant with another family, and I felt like I was back in high school for Friday night pizza night with our family friends! Coach's is very family friendly, but also not overrun with kids. Wait staff was attentive and fast, even on a busy night. I love their regular crust, which isn't thin and crispy but also not thick. Sauce and toppings are flavorful and they have a good variety of options or choose your own. Coach's will remain one of our go to take out pizza choices, but we'll definitely come back to dine in too. read more

After a long weekend of babysitting, my fiance and I decided on pizza for dinner. We've been on a journey of eating a locally-owned places (not franchises) and saw Coach's and decided to give it a whirl. The first negative thing about this place is they do not have an online ordering system - it's 2020, and not having an online ordering system can really have an impact on a business, but I digress. We phoned in our order and it was ready about 20 minutes later. We arrived, and the service was very good; however, the pizza was a little bit to be desired. My fiance had a mushroom pizza and it barely had any mushrooms on it. I had a ground beef pizza and it was okay - but I would of preferred a "stiffer" pizza, the one I received was limpy. Overall, I came in with a high expectation of excellent pizza, instead I left with disappointment. read more

I am a big yelp fan and a pizza fan. Most all of the good maybe m and pop pizza places have closed around Des Moines so I am always on the search. I was going through yelp and Coaches came up so I decided to give it a try. It was very difficult to find, in fact I had to call them. Once I found it I walked in and at first I was having second thoughts, the place only had a couple people in there. I decided I would sit at the bar and go ahead and have a couple beers and order a pie to go. When I ordered I asked for the crust to be crispy and the cheese golden. When the bartender brought it to me she open the box and asked me if it was crisp enough, I asked if it would be possible to cook it a little longer and she said no problem. When I got home the pizza was still hot and the crust was still crisp. The do not skimp on the toppings either. I think I found my new go to pizza place. read more

Seriously one of the best pizza places in the Des Moines area. Located on the skirts of West Glenn next to the Funny Bone, this little place is easy to miss, but you'll definitely regret it! I have had both pizza and wings here. While I wasn't the biggest fan of the wings, the pizza made up for that! They have multiple specialty pizzas such as the cyclone and the Hawkeye, but you really can't go wrong with any flavor. They have a nice little patio to relax and drink a beer on during summer evenings. Whenever our family gets together we always order pizza from here, so I highly recommend that you give this place a try if you haven't already. read more

Nice little pizza/sandwich shop in the West Glenn area. Great location, next to an Irish pub and some fun activities like the escape room. Nice choices for pizza, as well as build your own and some very good sandwiches all at a reasonable price. It feels like a smaller OP to me, which I liked. Good service as well. A simple, no-frills pizza joint. I really enjoy their BBQ chicken pizza- the BBQ sauce is high quality and the chicken is very tender and fresh. I enjoy supporting local small businesses, and this is one I definitely feel good about supporting. I am a fan and will be back for more! My partner and I shared a 12" taco pizza, and I had a cheap glass of wine. The pizza was delicious, and the wine was $5 a glass! Could not have been more pleased. The service was a little lack-luster, but we were the only customers in the place at 10 pm on a weeknight. As a pizza connoisseur, I loved the crust and sauce. The wings aren't bad but the Pizza the word that's in there name is not the best. Unless you like a sauce that has really sweet taste to it then maybe it's the place for you. Also, if you want a waiter to serve you while he is wearing gym shorts then this again could be up your alley. This service wasn't bad just needs a little attention to their wardrobe. read more

We ordered taco, The Hawkeye and an order of cheese bread. I would recommend ordering large pizzas due to the thin crust. Also the restaurant has only 6 tables, so take out is a large part of their business. It was full the night we were there and it was a little chilly for the patio. For six months or so I only ordered pizza here. A coworker recently had a sandwich. First of all, the pizza rules! Nice and crispy plus they are covered in toppings and cheese. Beats the chain pizza places ten out of ten times. I suggest either The Hawkeye or The Cyclone. I'm a fan of the Clones so if I can't decide I go with The Cyclone. Now, back to the sandwiches... I haven't had anything other than the Philly Cheese Steak. Huge sandwich and tastes stellar! I eat the entire thing and am mad at myself when I look down and see a food baby where my tummy used to be! Coach's is a great local business. My only knock would be the decor. This place screams kitchen nightmare. I was very concerned when we walked into an empty restaurant. We ordered the wings and an 8 inch pizza. My wife makes better pizza first of all. The wings were okay, but after watching the cook go to the cooler and put the wings on a rusted, overused tray I was super concerned. I became even more concerned when I saw fruit flies flying around once we got our food. Great place to hang out and watch the game. Casual yet classy & clean. The food is decent but the staff is top shelf! I've always felt welcome, alone or with friends. They're a small neighborhood place but sooo much better. Try the pizza and sit at the bar for a good conversation and a few laughs. Several large TV's, you can sit anywhere for a good view. Families are welcome. Pay attention to the hours though. They don't stay open late like the "bars" do in the area. read more

I just got a regular pizza with a few toppings and it was comparable to a pizza from a national chain but with a higher price. I also got bread sticks and they were nothing special at all. I decided to try Coach's Pizza after being pretty disappointed in the hyper-local pizza joints in West Des Moines. We walked in wanting a smaller table... 4 seats TOPS. Nothing. Everything was 6-10 seats which made a party of 2 a little awkward. Also, when we walked in we were the only customers there... at 5:30 on a Saturday. So this place is called "Coach's". One would assume it was a sports bar/ pizzaria of sorts. Kind of. But not really. There were TVs playing the Saturday football games, but all of the decor was for horse racing. Very random, and not... cool and hip. This could be why we were the youngest group in the place by at least 20 years when we left. The pizza was good. Right amount of cheese. Good crust and fresh veggies. So the food gets a 4. The service was great. Our waiter was the bartender and he had a great attentive attitude. He gets a 5. The atmosphere is the only thing holding this place back from being an all day hit, so it gets a 1. Because I value product and service over atmosphere, I give them a 4. I will "go" again, but it will be take out :-) read more

When I stopped in Sunday to pick up , a waitress was waiting on a table of 6 a man at the other end of the restaurant was standing up waving his menu's at the waitress and I stood at the bar behind a Coach employee who was engaged in conversation with customer who had been served , I waited a longer than was necessary , then left . Our waitress was one of the most gruff unhappy people I've ever met and really not in a good mood at all. she looked like we were a bother that we entered the restaurant. Definitely worth visiting! Tons of toppings on their pizzas. Lots of good flavor with a very thin and crispy crust. I can normally eat half a large pizza easily but this has so many toppings that I'm good on just a quarter of their large. Will definitely be coming back here again and again. read more
