The Whitney Young Library has been remodeled in the last couple years, and now has a very sleek,…read moremodern look, reminiscent of a Miesian style. I think that is by design (love a good pun), because after I first viewed this building I found an article wherein the architecture says he is inspired in his work by Mies. (Apparently Mies was a mentor, so the connection makes sense!) I have heard of Whitney Young, of course; one of the top selective high schools in the city is named for him (a school that only became more high profile because Michelle Obama is an alumna). I didn't realize that he was a Black man, a civil rights leader, and served at the helm of the National Urban League. Whilst I appreciate that the city/CPL has honored Black and brown leaders by doing things like naming branches after them, it would be nice if they would do so in areas besides the Black and brown neighborhoods (Chicago is one of the most segregated cities in the country, yes, in the year of our Lord 2022). It might make a bit more sense if Whitney Young was from the neighborhood, but I don't think he had any real connection to Chicago. But... I digress. It's got a pretty small footprint, and is a single level. It was designed by Jay Carow (pretty sure that's his name, not Hay Carow as the branch webpage might have you believe), Though there's a small collection of books compared to many other branches (not a problem since you can have books transferred from branch to branch for pickup within a few days!) it does have some useful services. There are several computers, and there's a relatively large children's section for the overall size of the building. There's a small enclosed courtyard at the southwest corner of the building. They have a few study rooms, one specifically geared toward teens. And in addition to that, there's a maker lab and a recording studio. The recording studio was a surprise and pretty cool to see; it would be neat to try it out sometime. I don't know how the reservation process works but luckily they have a phone number, email, and a website! There's a good sized parking lot at this location. They have an outdoor plaza too, and I'm curious what they use that space for. The west exterior wall has a really nice mural that spans the length of it as well.

I've early voted with ease here as well. My book returns have never been late because they look out without even having to ask. Library staff are nice and professional; truly the unsung heroes. This location also has free parking!!! I'm proud to keep choosing this great location directly in my neighborhood!

From the fireplace on the second floor to the outdoor fountain, this is a thoughtfully designed library that can cater to a wide variety of visitors. The staff was very friendly and helpful when I wanted to book a private, study room. I loved every minute of my visit here and I will definitely visit again.

I love the free give-away things to make and spices to cook with. The front desk people are very helpful with any questions I may have. I absolutely love the donation day things, to both clear my drawers, cabinets and craft areas of unneeded items and see if I want any new ones from others. I have found so many gems there. My thanks to the people who set that up. And the computer lab is also wonderful. So glad to be visiting there often, including the free borrowing of puzzles in the front area.

She was reprehending my 1yr old for moving the chairs. My children were not loud, we not making a mess. They did not close for another 45mins. I was on my cell but was rudely told its not allowed. Ok i put the phone to the side &I starting packing up my kids & my diaper bag to leave. Told my son to pick something up that fell outta my bag.Another rude comment not needed. I asked her why are u being like this? She then scolded me. She then started to bicker with me. Whatt??? Just let me leave and shut yr mouth.

They don't have too many of the newest and hottest books/ items in comparison to other library's in the area. I hope that they remodel/ expand now that the lot next to them has been bought.

I rented Grapes of Wrath from this library and when i turned it back in there was supposedly water…read moredamage and they made me pay for it. I don't mind but they took this American classic off the shelves and out of circulation. There is now 1 copy in a 9 library system. There's is not a library in this country that should not have this book on the shelves. It's now in my personal collection and its perfectly readable and not in bad shape for a paperback book that looks like it was printed in 2006. Maybe I shouldn't expect the values to be different for a library system that felt it appropriate to put life sized cardboard cut outs of Donald trump inside of it a couple of summers ago
