It doesn't look like much and honestly it isn't, however this place just has some good food! Frank's was recommended to us by a local celebrity, at least I think he is. Shingle Shaker, the official scroll reader for Punxsutawney Phil's Groundhog Day shenanigans told us about this local food establishment and I'm glad he did! It's located right in a corner, a somewhat confusing corner so don't get frustrated, pull in beside the building (Google didn't tell us that) and park. The entrance we used was on the side, in not sure if there is another entrance or not. As I said, it doesn't look like much. Just a few tables inside, seems a popular take out place though. They also have seating at the counter. You order at the cash register then find a place to sit and they bring out your food. Again, I took the Single Shaker's suggestion and ordered the loose cheeseburger with fries. Hubby ordered a double cheeseburger with fries. He would have preferred something else but they were out of any salads. Ok, so a loose cheeseburger is basically ground hamburger stuffed into a hot dog bun! The order comes with two, you can't order just one (that would have been my choice) but they are pretty delicious. They put a special family sauce on it, which is a tad sweet but good. It was a little weird because you are expecting a hot dog in a bun but instead it's burger! The buns are soft and yummy. Hubby said it reminded him of sloppy joe, he wasn't a fan but I, really liked it. His double was good and plenty for him. Our fries were good as well but I asked for them to be crispy, which they were not. The food comes out on the smallest paper plates necessary for the food to fit on! Thankfully there were napkins on the table to use, burger on the napkin and use the tiny plate for ketchup . The staff are friendly, especially the order taker at the register. I came to Frank's as it was highly recommend by locals. What an amazing, simple, hotdog, hamburger, sandwich shop. Everything was fresh and made with care. The prices are comparable to that a of a fast food chain, but the quality far exceeded that. They run quite the crowd (and for good reason) so seating might be limited. However, regardless of the line, the food will be delivered quickly. Infact, because we were even standing in a line, we received a free bag of their house-made BBQ chips. Now that's service. My friend who was raised in Punxsy didn't know about this place, and now he swears he'll keep going back. and I wish I lived closer just for that reason. Frank's Star - the epitome of old school lunch joints. Stopped by Punxsutawney on a road trip to the Midwest for Frank's as much as I did for the groundhogs. Good crowd of retirees filled the store at 2pm on a Friday, all eyes riveted to the late-season series between the Pirates and the Cubs (so long, suckers). Ordered both the burger and dogs, to be washed down by a full pint of chocolate milk - which comes in two sizes. Hot dog offered a caseless (no pop) beef frank topped with onions, mustard, and the special beefy topping. Despite being overall soft and satisfying, it offered a diversity of textures and flavors to avoid the pitfalls of the Olneyville New York System dog (Providence, RI) in which all bites dissolve into a greasy hot dog paste. Central Pennsylvania 1, Rhode Island 0. Of note, dogs are approximately 6 inches; pretty easy to put down three. Overall good, but nothing life-changing. Despite being known for the hot dogs, the winner was actually the cheeseburger. A simple burger with a thin, gridiron-browned patty within a classic seedless bun, topped with Frank's beefy sauce, this burger takes top honors in the category of cheap ($2.75), down-home burgers. Certainly no attempt at gourmet, (no foie gras, avocado, or even bacon to be found), but this is an honest burger that puts to shame the ho-hum offerings of McDonald's. Quaint is the word that comes to mind when I think of this restaurant. There's no fancy bells or whistles but it's good down home food. Prices are incredibly reasonable and they even offer discounts for students and military. We went on ground hogs day so it was packed but we were able to get a seat at the long counter on the wall. This place is tiny and cramped. The food was ok. Nothing great. They serve you boardwalk fries with your dogs so that's a plus. The service was downright amazing. Excellent food and customer service. When you walk in the door you are greeted and treated like family. The hotdogs are the best! We just visited again this week and my husband and I both got cheeseburgers and the fresh cut French fries. The cheeseburger was juicy, it had that fantastic crust on outside of the burger and moist center that drip juices when you take a bite. The ingredients were fresh and the fries were the best I've ever had, crispy, salty and not greasy! Love this place and every time we are in Punxsy to visit family, we will always stop in for a meal!
