Two Texas dogs and drag from the fryer fries.
    Matthew U.

I've been to Altoona on numerous occasions and had no clue just how close this place is to the mall. You know what? That may have been a good thing for me or I would not have explored Altoona more and would have made this a habitual thing for me. Driving up to here you think that you might be in for a lackluster experience. It looks ordinary from the outside and not too different on the inside. Looks like your run of the mill restaurant with a little bit of Texas flair in the decor. Speaking of the inside, when you walk in the main front door you get hit in the face with the aroma of onions. It's not the worst thing in the world, as onions gives you a heads up to ready yourself for a small feast. I have known of Texas Hot Dogs for some time, but never had a chance to visit until now. So when I walked in I knew I wanted a hot dog, but not quite sure exactly which kind. The young girl behind the counter kind of blurted out, "I can help who's next," and then continued to lean on the counter while looking down and only looking up to give me one of those exhausted looks like I have asked a question that I obviously was too stupid to know the answer. Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked. I had asked what exactly was on a Texas dog and after the exhausted eye roll was told that it is a brown mustard, chili and onions. I didn't need to think any more and told her to give me two of them. I wanted a side of fries and asked just how big is the small. After walking like a sloth the five feet she showed me a small fry bag and I told her to give me the large. Added a bottle of water to my order and it came to just shy of $7. Have my food on my tray and make my way to a table and start to dig in. Remember that onion smell I was talking about earlier? Well not only did it permeate the air, but also this hot dog. It is as if they cut up these onions and let them steep in water that came from onions. They were a little too overpowering for me. Even though I braved it through the first dog, I had to brush off as much of the onions from the second dog as I could. I thought that the mix of flavors would balance out, but the onions had other plans. Otherwise, and without the onions, they were fantastic. The mustard only really giving a hint to flavor and the chili was on point. Fries were fresh from the fryer and HOT. Nice and crispy, and screaming for some ketchup to be dipped in. I decided to dock this place a star for the lackluster and almost robotic customer service. Lackluster for reasons already listed and robotic because while I was eating it was like they were scripted to say the same thing over and over again when someone left the business. Kind of got annoying and something that was told to them to keep doing.

The Texas hot dog was soooo good. That sauce was scrumptious! The fries and cheese were just as delicious. If you want a cheap date night with a old fashioned hot dog style feel I highly recommend trying here.

In our 3 days visiting PA we checked out 3 different hot dog places and this place came in 2nd. We arrived 15 minutes before the place even opened and there were already cars waiting in the lot so we quickly grabbed a table beside the stream and waited patiently. About 5 minutes before opening I headed to the door to get in line and was quickly waited on, the staff at this place are truly a fine oiled machine. I ordered 2 hot dogs, onion rings, breaded mushrooms, macaroni salad and baked beans topped with their chili sauce. The hot dogs and other assorted munchies were all very good but the star of the show was definitely the baked beans topped with chili, it was absolutely delicious. This place is at the end of a road and there is plenty of on-site parking but please don't let the crowds deter you, they get you in and out quickly and with a smile on your face, looking forward to our next visit.

2 locations, this one is on 58th Street. The other is downtown.

I had been looking around the…read morearea for a place I had never been and one that offered something that I really wanted to eat. When I saw Altoona's Original Texas Hotdogs pop up I didn't have to think much more about it. Located in downtown Altoona, this place has the charm that you would expect to find in some bustling metropolis. However you have it here in Altoona, one of Pennsylvania's biggest cities but with a small town feel. I walked in and made my way to a booth, I was greeted on my way to my seat and told someone would be with me shortly. I sat down and looked at the menu on the table and made my decision fairly quickly. The employees in here are friendly and keep an eye on everything that is going on. Once they saw that I was done looking over the menu someone came to my table to take my order. After placing my order I felt very welcomed here. Every thing I asked for was followed by a "sure thing hun" or "you got it." Waiting for my food I looked around a bit to check this place out. There is the counter that you can order take out from or pay on your way out. Behind that is the grill and fryer where all the food is prepared. Off to the left of that is a counter top to sit at. There are booths along the one wall and some table tops between the booths and counter top. There is also a seating area to the rear of the building. After my look around the restaurant my food arrived. Two Texas Dogs and an order of Chili Cheese Fries. Medium drink to top it off. That came to a reasonable price under $10. The dogs were a bit onion heavy but palatable. I love a good chili and they definitely nailed that here. Not too greasy and the meat was really fine and you could eat this like a soup. Add some mustard and these things are ready to go. The fries were swimming in goodness. Fresh fried these are then topped with a generous portion of both chili and cheese sauce. You need to eat these with a fork unless you are alright with getting a bit messy. One thing you'll need to know here is that if you are getting food most of it comes on paper plates, unless you get a bowl of chili or a side that would soak through, everything is disposable here. Another thing to know, if you pay with a card you will be charged a fee.

Mr Hot Dog offers two dog options on the menu (though you can create your own as well) : Texas Dog with cheese, onions, and special chili mustard sauce and Texas Dog with onions and special chili mustard sauce. Mr Hot Dog also serves ice cream, makes shakes, and has daily specials ranging from home made meat loaf to various hot sandwiches. The gentleman behind the counter who greeted us kept us on our feet with a mix of wit and humor. The woman who took our order and served us was very pleasant and helpful. Attentive, warm service - how nice. Mr Hot Dog delivers on its brand experience and for that, plus the tasty dogs and the good service, I give it five stars. We were traveling home to Ohio from the east coast and this was a much nicer, more fun experience than slogging into a fast food restaurant from the interstate. Very much worth the few minutes extra to get there.

Parking is on the street, in the nearby garage or in the few spaces around the adjacent businesses. The interior is like most FG's, simple, red & white with bags of potatoes and fresh peanuts. I've always been a fan of FG's but with a lot more "fresh" fast options opened, it's dropped off my radar in recent years. For the uninitiated FG's is unique in that the burger is a fresh, never frozen 100% USDA beef, ground in-store daily. They are hand patties so they come out fresh and juicy wrapped in tinfoil. FG offers other fresh ingredients and the standouts are the fresh-cut fries and tasty buns =)! They also offer a bottomless supply of unshelled peanuts for free. On this day, I stopped in for lunch and ordered a "little" cheeseburger with fries and a drink. You can order the "little" which means 1 patty and saves you a few dollars. Personally, I'm not a fan of the 2-patty burgers. As you'll realize this place can be messy and the 2-patty sandwich complicates things a bit. Beyond that they give you numerous ways to customize your order but I typically go "all the way" -- sans mushrooms. Today's visit was outstanding. The burger and fries were fresh and tasty. I'm usually not a fan of the tinfoil (over waxpaper) but FG likes to lock in the heat. Sometimes the sandwich comes out smashed down. This would be a 5-star establishment all day but due to costs (around $18 for one person) and past inconsistency, I've knocked them down a notch. That said, State College has performed well the last few visits!
