I recently moved to the area and saw this posted on FB Exploring Butler so I stopped in (and so glad I did)!!! The staff were patient and extremely helpful; after giving my order, we chatted while my hot dog and onion rings were prepared. The staff explained the onion rings were made with real onions and homemade coating! YUM! and the chili on the hot dog was very tasty. Swung by to get a Butler classic hotdog. The doggie deal is $7 comes with two dogs fries and a drink. It was exactly what I needed. Store bought dogs with store bought chili and cheese. I wish they had put more chili on I wanted it dripping off. The fries are basic store bought fries with salt and pepper added they hit the spot. Ate at a picnic table outside. So good! read more

I was in the area and wanted some dogs so we tried it out. Seems they're known for the "butler dog" which is a hot dog with chilli, onion and a pickle. I like trying what places are known for and it was ok. Being from New Castle we're known for our chili but this was pretty mild and seemed a little bland. Service was really good, friendly staff. It's just a take out spot, no inside tables. Couple picnic tables outside good for the warmer weather. Price was good also! No complaints there. If I'm in the area again I'd definitely stop but probably just stick with ketchup and onion. Although I would like to try a few other things on their menu as well. read more

A few weeks ago I ordered the Butler cheese steak and it was delicious, well worth the mess I made eating it. Today I ordered fish sandwich and fries with chili. The fish sandwich was gigantic and so good! The fries with chili were awesome!! It's a great place with great food!! read more

Not good, fries are always cold and greasy. The buns are not fresh like the used to be and not good overall.

Who knew this little whole in the wall would offer a huge 8oz fish sandwich with a side of slaw for $6. It's certainly enough food for 2 people. The fish is made while you wait and takes less than 10 minutes. I also tried a hot dog with kraut there and it frankly it's not worth mentioning. Get the fish. They've had the best of times, they've had the worst of times. There have been many hot dog shops in Butler, all inspired by the ex famous main street shop. When this location on Monroe Street was first opened I enjoyed their awesome food. Then it was sold, and the food was awful. Then it was sold, and the food somehow became even worse. However it was sold again to the current owners, and I must say, it has now improved a lot! Current food is wayyy better than it was 1 year ago. I give them serious props for their turn around so far. I hope it continues to improve into its former glory! read more

I had heard from a number of people that this was the heir to Butler's hot dog history. Everyone from this area over a certain age grew up with "3 hots, pickle also" & frIes with orange gravy. The former, being what the waitress would shout back to the cooks when the order was for hot dogs with, "everything" (chili, onion, pickles), and the latter being the most amazing orangeish gelatinous mess on top of fantastic fries. Long after I'd moved away, I'd drive 60 miles back to Butler to grab a few dogs & a container or two of the best hotdog chili ever, to take back home to savor. Decades later, the old dog shop downtown had gone out of business (it's Slippery Rock doppelganger having closed long before) by the time I moved back to Butler, leaving a hotdog shaped hole in my heart (and stomach.) I had heard there was a place down by the Monroe Hotel that had the chili and gravy but I hadn't ventured down to try it. Side note: The original Butler hotdog shop is so important to area culture that the local Brighton franchise pays homage to the old place in the form of their "Butler Dog" and is the only one of their franchises where gravy is available for the fries. So, anyhow, a year or so after moving back I see that they've opened a new Butler Hot Dog Shoppe over on the Conno side of town. I immediately went to go try it, only to dIscover they were closed for a holiday. I have to admit that I wasn't too keen on a diner inside a youth sports complex but I resolved to forego judgement until I tried the food. A month or so later, my son and I were out looking for sustenance and gave it another shot. The moment I walked in the door and was greeted by the smell of that chili sauce I knew so well, I was happy as a clam (whatever that means.) I asked for three hot dogs and an order of fries with gravy, and may have shown a slight moment of consternation when asked how I wanted them & if I wanted orange or brown gravy (as if any civilized person had other than chili, onion, pickle and orange gravy for the fries.) The hot dogs were excellent. Not as tasty as, say, a well-grilled Hebrew National, but with the right density, a good bun, and ohhhh that chili. The fries were tasty & the gravy good (though more yellow than orange & not as thick as it should have been.) A note on that gravy: the first thing I thought of when tasting it was how similar in taste it is to the poutine gravy from Franktuary in Lawrenceville, though much thinner and without the sharpness of the cheese curds. All in all, despite the not-quite-orange gravy, I'll give this place four stars for being exactly what they aim and claim to be: Butler's Hot Dog Shoppe. read more

This is bad. Today, I ordered one hotdog and fries with orange gravy. The fries tasted dried out and cold. The gravy was still hot so that was helpful. My hotdog bun was burnt and I could eat 1/2 of it. Go to Brightons. It is much better. read more

I loved the original hot dog shoppe, this place is as close to being it without actually being it. The ladies are super friendly and the place is always packed. The chili cheese dog is delicious. I don't much care for where it's located. I can't go in there without first running into some bun who needs a few dollars to buy his 40 next store at the six pack store. Traffic is also unforgiving because the parking lot is right passed a 3 way stop sign. Not the most appealing part of town. I'll eat there again but it's not something I'd die to have. This place won't make you poor, but it probably will leave you full. It's not the fanciest, but where the hot dogs are great. It sure doesn't hurt that there is a six pack shop next door. If one finds oneself in Butler, it's the place to go to eat, unless one is looking for Italian food. More on that later. read more

went there Sat 5/18/14 saw all the huge signs outside about hot dogs. I thought wow this must be a place with a great dog..... Honestly the service was very poor, the girl behind counter seemed put off, and she was dirty and sweaty... and the hot dogs were worst I have ever had. Sheetz makes a better hot dog. the hot dog was thickness of a little girls pinkie finger. My gf thought it was a slim jim, no lie. the floor was filthy. behind the counter was filthy and the girl kept wiping her nose. took 23 minutes for hot dogs and fries, the messed up my order and put relish and mustard on the fries, and ketchup on the dog. who ever heard of such a thing? I didnt complain as I felt they would do something crazy to my reorder. the picnic table inside the joint was gross and the place needs a coat of paint so bad it makes you wonder how they don't see that. I am from Pittsburgh and the Original Hot Dog in Oakland would put this place to shame. Just so bad.... read more

Everyone says the big fish sandwich is awesome and it is, but their mushroom Swiss burger is probably one of my favorites and ranks up there with five guys burgers. Sure it's not the classiest looking place, but if your looking for that local burger joint feel and a real burger made just for you with some real taste then this is the place. Also it's prepared very quickly and the people who work there all seem very nice- or atleast I've never had any issues with anyone there. The fish sandwich is to die for, same with the Chicken,Bacon, Ranch Hogie!! Dispite how it looks or the size, they offer real home style cooking. I was so full after! Amazing food and great taste. I'm going to have to stop down there more often. Just down the road from me. Great food, my picky eater kids will actually eat it. I'm addicted to the orange gravy. It's amazing. Fish sandwich was really good, hot dogs are always my favorite and the hamburgers are a little on the dry side but overall very good. The onion rings are simply amazing. The first problem is there's really nowhere to sit down and the second problem is that the sandwich was totally underwhelming. Wasn't very big & didn't live up to my expectations.
