It seems like the way they do class placements is not so much age range based + skill level but solely just skill level. So you could be in the same class at 16 with a 5 year old if you're a beginner. This is probably due to not having that many students, just my assumption. The main dance instructor, also one of the owners I believe, did not inform the parents of what was going on for the recital. She had mentioned the time to arrive would be 12:30pm but in actuality that was the drop off time for the dancers to practice first. For me, I was not that surprised because I had done dance before when I was younger and grew up performing. But many parents were livid and annoyed, including my own. Recital started at 3:45. First, it was kind of unorganized. No use of curtains. Mainly projector & showed ads for 25 minutes of their sponsors... thought that was peculiar. Also, seemed to be a thing that majority of the different dance groups performing all looked confused & lost. No one seemed to know the choreography they were supposed to do so that was concerning to me. Questions that ran through my mind included: So what do they do in class? Did they come up with these routines the night before and expected them to remember? Everyone looked to be doing their own thing & did not look uniform at all. Another thing was, many people did not buy tickets to go watch & none of the staff checked tickets either. You could easily walk in free admission. I am no classical dancer, but I do know a thing or two about feet etiquette, which is super important in dancing, especially. Every dancer I saw on the stage had sickled feet & not turned out... that is bad & allows dancers to be injury prone. Sickled feet is usually due to a dancer's limited foot and ankle flexibility. So with that being said, why is this studio not implementing more stretching to increase flexibility during maybe the last 5-10 minutes of their 2-3 hr class? The main dance teacher/owner is a beautiful Latin style dancer. I'm not sure exactly how difficult it is to teach Latin dance nor learn it, but out of the 50 (approx) kids from both this location & Newton location, I only saw 1 girl who seemed to know what was going on.

The Hip Hop class at the Dance Complex is fun and Carl the instructor is great! Carl is good with breaking down the steps, he is encouraging and enthusiastic. The people attending the class are awesome too and very friendly. I would consider the Hip Hop class to be slightly for beginners and more for intermediate and up dancers. It's great to get out there and dance whether you are a beginner or not. There is no judgement in the class and it's fun because we are all learning together. I would definitely recommend the Hip Hop class and I plan to attend the Party Dance class too!

Prior to working with Carl and Boston Mobile Dance Studio, I had been taking lessons from an instructor in NYC who had quite an impressive resume including choreography for numerous major music artists and music videos. I only say this because I can at least compare my experience with Carl with my prior instructor/company. Carl is incredibly talented, patient, hard working, and enthusiastic. His body of work speaks for itself. His ability to break down complex technical dance and then teach it in a way that is clear, logical, and understandable has been the key to expeditiously improving my dance skills. His teaching methods are fun and high-intensity. What I appreciate most about Carl is how he tailors our sessions to exactly what I need. He goes above and beyond our dance sessions...it is not uncommon for him to continue our lesson outside of the studio (on his own time). I have been impressed by how he even follows up with me between sessions via text to check on my progress and see if I have further questions or need additional video work to clarify what we worked on. He allows me to video each session so that I have plenty to work on between sessions. He even sometimes does bonus video work outside of the session to emphasize critical skills to work on. Carl also teaches critical components of engaging the audience/crowd through facial expression/body language and gives real-life scenarios where he uses specific techniques to engage his audience in different contexts. As a busy professional, my schedule is quite busy- Carl works around my schedule every week. He is very flexible and offers multiple dance studios to work in depending on my needs. Sorry for the long-winded review, but I can't say enough about Carl and Boston Mobile Dance. Carl has taken my dance to another level... I can't recommend him enough!

The owner (her name was Lindsey I believe) came across as very well mannered and likeable upon our first few interactions, but unfortunately that didn't last. She would have irrational mood swings and handle issues with a severe negative attitude around the children. When I confronted her about this, however, she became defensive and gave me major attitude. Additionally, it seemed like my daughter was never learning anything new. I would be paying this women a fortune to teach my daughter the same thing she taught her the week before. I am very displeased with my overall experience with management and staffing. As for the studio itself, the waiting room reeked of body odor every time I was there. It was so unbearable that I would just wait outside for my daughter to finish as I peered through the glass windows. Not to mention the studio was dirty and not well organized. Even the oldest students performing (high school aged) had to start dances over as they had no clue what they were supposed to be doing. The choreography mainly consisted of off beat skipping across the stage, and nothing else. The cost is ridiculous for the lack of quality, I paid twice what our old school charged for less than half the quality. Neither of my daughter's instructors were present for the dress rehearsal or recital. Although considering the time the teachers spent playing on their cell phones during class, this should come as no surprise. But the end of the line, was the lack of supervision backstage. There were countless ADULTS (both men and women) in and out of the dressing room throughout the performance, and none of the teachers even seemed to notice. My daughter was not onstage for the finale of the show, causing me to panic and hurry to the dressing room, where I found here sobbing because one of the other students told her she wasn't allowed to participate in the finale. Not only did none of the teachers or backstage chaperones step in to correct the other child, they didn't even notice that my daughter was missing from the stage! I promptly found the owner to discuss, and she wasn't even aware of the situation. As a mother, my utmost concern is my daughter's safety and well being, and I feel that this school doesn't consider the safety of their students at all. I wouldn't recommend this school to someone I disliked, let alone anyone i knew and cared for. Save your money and go to any other school, I guarantee they'll keep better track of your child than Expressions.
