I usually like this place(cheap) but after the COVID-19 closure, they haven't really bothered to mow most of the course. Lost 12 balls. Hopefully it's a temporary problem but make sure to call ahead and asked if they mowed the entire course, not some sections. read more

This is the only golf course I use, and if it's sold and shut down it'll be depressing. I'm 68, and I walk the course for the exercise, two days a week. There is no dress code, which is cool, and the staff and owners are very friendly. Some people refer to Frederick Golf Club as 'pasture golf', and maybe it is. But I enjoy the course for the scenery as much as for the golf. I've seen deer on the greens, and cranes on the fairways. And I once had a bald eagle critique my game on the 3rd hole from a nearby tree. The clubhouse is nothing to write home about, but I go in there just long enough to pay my green fees. I always golf alone, and very rarely keep score. If I flub a shot, I just take it over. There are other courses around Frederick where you can get all dressed up, show off your thousand dollar clubs, and sit around the clubhouse swapping lies. First, the disclosures: - 18-20 handicapper - I prefer cheap tracks w/ no dress code. - I usually walk, and I'm a sucker for scenery. I've played here about 100 times, and I can't believe they only charge $8 to walk as many holes as you want on a weekday. It's $23 to play 18 with a cart on weekends. So, why so cheap? - It's pretty short. A typical par 4 is about 300 yds, par 3 is 120, and the only par 5 is about 440. - It's easy. On nearly all par 4's, just hit your driver as hard as you can. Left, right, or middle -- it's all good. - The fairway and rough grass is basically as god made it. It also has 'quirks' that are charming to me (I've played it a bunch), but would be maddening to a 1st timer: - The distances on the scorecard are absolute fiction. If you knock about 10% off each number, you probably got it. - The scorecard is nearly worthless. There's no course map, and none of the three 9-hole-courses are marked. - The holes themselves have only "1 - par 4". (No picture, nothing saying which 9 you're playing, no yardage) - It's impossible to know how to get to the next hole without just guessing and checking. Now, all that said, it's 5-stars because: - The greens are reasonably well kept. All the sins of a cheapo golf course are forgiven when the greens are fair. - It's beautiful. S. Maryland is very underrated for how beautiful it is, and this course shows the rolling countryside. - Folks are friendly, and they stay open even when it's cold. - You've got a legitimate shot at birdie -- or even eagle -- on every hole. - You can play a super easy 9, and pretty easy 9, or a 9 that's like a normal course. read more

I give this 4-stars because courses like this are what will save golf. If you want to boost your golfing ego play here. I shot a 3-over 69. It's difficult to avoid parring every hole. I had four bogeys and one birdie. I agree with the reviewer below: The course is on farm land, is charming, and beautiful. I walked and played 18 for $8. Folks are nice. You get what you pay for. Very inexpensive and a basic course that is suited for a beginner or someone just wanting to knock a few balls around. Greens bumpy and slow fuzzy. Fairways were mostly at short rough height. Par 67, no par 5's. Wide open, friendly people. No driving range but the course itself is like a driving range. Cut the fairways and fertilize/weed/aerate greens would help and make course more enjoyable read more

This course the only course that my busted 35 handicap ass can play. Why? Because it only costs $26 for 18 holes and a cart, you can't beat that deal. The course itself it not spectacular, it has 2 sand traps, both are rock hard; only one real water hazard, and one tall grass swamp. The greens are rock hard and sometimes you will have to putt around a bald spot. There are two cups (that don't get moved), and you move the pin to the other cup for the next group; so you never know where the pin will be... very exciting. Over all, the course sucks but for the hackers with hand-me-down clubs that shoot 58 in the front 9, this is the cheapest and best place to be. Most of the people playing there are in my league, losing balls left and right, hitting into the next fairway or two, and generally having a good time drinking beer chasing a little white ball around a field on a sunny day. Oh, they are really sticklers and anti-coolers, if you bring beer you will need to put it into a small soft cooler or in a plastic bag with ice. I have only been to Frederick Golf Club maybe twice but I will not be returning. Today I came to simply walk as my friends played since I am terrible at golf (I didn't even bring clubs). I waited outside the club house as my friends went to pay. As we went to the first hole a woman came out and asked if we were all three playing, I said I am not playing but she said that I still needed to pay. I went in and paid and then we went to the course. At the second hole another woman came up with a club head cover and asked if it was ours. It was my friends and she said "aren't you glad that we aren't all dishonest" inferring we were dishonest for me wishing to walk with my friends. She then said "you should think about not coming back." Pretty terrible customer service considering we had never done anything wrong. I will never give them my business again and I hope you do the same. read more

Where to begin??!! Conditions aren't very good. I'd have to say it's a borderline cow pasture. Cheap to play: $15 with a cart, senior rate. Fairways not too bad, tee boxes small and a bit shabby, greens are small, very slow and usually don't hold approach shots. It is a 27 hole facility. If it were up to me, I'd pick the best 18 holes and close the other 9. I'd then use the maintenance savings on the closed holes and pump that money into the greens on the remaining 18. Then I'd think about a newer fleet of golf carts. They could probably make a few extra bucks by selling hot dogs. The only food and beverages I saw was a couple of vending machines. The course has potential. I don't know if the owner is being cheap or simply acan't acquire funds to make the course better. read more

The course is cheap and not well maintained. My lawn is better taken care of. The people are not friendly at all. You ask questions and you get vague answers or dumb looks. As a beginning player I would like to learn more about the game and how to approach the course, etc. They are not help at all. As I said CHEAP is the key word. Even for the cost, this "golf" course is a joke. Poorly maintained and the people I dealt with who work at the course are rude and argumentative. If you do golf here, make sure that you are using old clubs that you don't care about damaging. Spend a few extra dollars and go somewhere else, or just stay home and hit golf balls in the nearest field. read more

I am also a beginner golfer and was looking for an inexpensive way to practice my golf. A friend invited me to this course and what the other reviewers posted about the conditions of the course is right on. However I would like to point readers that I found a way better alternative for inexpensive golf in way better conditions. I live in Hagerstowna and didn't mind the 20 min drive to Frederick Golf Club, however I was looking for better course conditions. I called around Hagerstown and found that Beaver Country Club in Hagerstown is a great course with well manicured lawns and greens. People are very beginner-friendly and they sell great food. I paid $99.00 per year for a memebership and $12.00 for 9 holes cart included. or $24.00 for 18 holes cart included. I highly recommend this course for anyone from beginners to seasoned-players. If you want to play real golf at a challenging course with friendly staff that make your golfing experience pleasant and not get harassed or disrespected I'd strongly suggest you play any course other than The Frederick Golf Club (they take great liberties in using "golf club" as their business name). You can play the VFW walking for $7 mid week at Maple Run is maybe $16. What you get at those courses is polite and friendly customer service. More importantly your money gets you real fairways that get mowed and watered on a regular basis, greens that get taken care of nicely and tee boxes in better shape than the Frederick Golf Club's greens. You also won't get disrespected or harassed by the most unprofessional, unfriendly staff I've ever encountered. Save your time, money and equipment and play at a friendly course where customer service is more of a priority. I wouldn't give this course another dime. Had to give them a star or I wouldn't be able to post otherwise I'd give them a -5 stars. read more

Love the course. If you want to play Augusta National, drive to Augusta, Georgia and enjoy. If you want to play an affordable peaceful round of golf, play this course. Every person associated with the Frederick Golf Club has been helpful and courteous. I play here frequently and it has always been a wonderful experience. read more
