Special notes: Water brought to the table choice of sparkling water or bottled water (Fiji $7 dollars). Caution on the desserts! iPad is used for pictures without prices. Fred's is located in the Hotel Zone on the lagoon side of the strip. We had dinner here our first night in Cancun and decided to come back to watch the sunset, which turned out to be a great idea. Our waiters on our first visit, Barbara and Franco, were excellent servers. The service on our second visit was not nearly as good--the servers would disappear for long periods and we couldn't find anyone to attend us, despite the fact that our table had four waiters. For an excellent, authentic dining experience in the Hotel Zone, might I suggest Xkat-la. Its only a couple minutes down the road. Fred's is a complete joke. For some reason this restaurant tries so hard to be American, but in fact it does a disservice to American chain restaurants. You will receive better, honest service at a Chili's in the States. This restaurant is dishonest, completely overdone, overpriced, and over engineered. There are more people standing around 'working' there than there are patrons. With that, one would expect great service, which sadly is not the case. After our hostess gave us an entirely too formal, over the top introduction to our server, a random person we were not introduced to asks if we would like something to drink. There was no drink menu and there was immediate pressure to place an order. My friend ordered a pina colada, and to save time and brain power I ordered the same. We were then asked what kind of rum we wanted - when replying we do not care, this random additional person taking our drink order was visibly annoyed by this response. Turns out this person was not a bartender, but a 'mixologist', who in my opinion should be the rum expert, not I. Things really start to get fun when we're reunited with our server to place our food order. She immediately gave us today's specials and really talked them up. One of the items was lobster presented in a wooden box. (You're supposed to be impressed) I wasn't starving, and also wasn't dazzled by the specials so I ordered the grilled fish fillet. The server did not like that at all. She tried to talk me out of ordering it no fewer than 3 times, to which she kept saying how small it is. The small size was just what I was looking for, so I actually won this round and ordered what I wanted. Until.... I asked for a side order of fries to go with it, in which my friend chimes in and says me too. The server tells us they don't have fries. This is where you, the reader, can choose your own adventure and look up the menu yourself to solve this mystery, or stay here and keep reading. Spoiler alert, there are Fish & Chips, as well as two different types of Lobster Rolls on the menu that are served with fries. Naturally I mention 'But you sell fish and chips, there are fries on the menu'. This is where it gets really good. She quickly replies with 'Those are for decoration' DECORATION. What does that even mean? My instinct was to laugh, my friend however was not amused and proceeded to tell her how ridiculous that was. She ultimately said she would need to ask for her 'captain's approval'. Well we received captain's approval for the salacious orders of fries and we should be thanking her at that point by the way she explained it to us. Later on during this ordeal, the server came back to apologize for telling us they didn't sell fries. It was all very awkward, apologizing for being caught in a lie. One of the many captain's standing around came over to ask how we were doing at one point, tried to make small talk, but the fakeness exuding from this person and the others working there is nauseating and a complete turn-off. This was by far the grossest restaurant experience I've ever had. The crooked way they try to talk you into spending more money with the specials, and the blatant lies were flat out disgusting. After the fact I realized this restaurant is part of a restaurant group, so you could also eliminate the following restaurants from your list: Porteno H Roof Ilios Mantela Bak Porfirios Harrys Nicoletta La Vicenta El Squid Roe Carlos N Charlies Cao H Moonlight Senor Frogs Erizo If you made it this far, I gave 1 star for the food. While we were vacationing in Cancun for Christmas 2020 (to get away from all the craziness) my daughter and I noticed the advertisements and the restaurant as we were running along Kukulcan Blvd where our resort was. We had been staying at the Oasis Pyramid Grand Cancun and very disappointed in the quality of the food at the resort. Being it was Christmas and all -- I decided that for Christmas dinner I would treat my family to a great dinner out. Well FRED's did not disappoint: Here we go..... Ambiance: We were greeted promptly at the hostess stand and given temperature checks before seating. We went at a reasonable hour -- around 5pm so that we could make sure we got a good spot....Cancun was cool today so we opted for jeans and sweatshirts. The hostess promptly sat us at a table looking out over the patio and into the lagoon (only downside was the doors kept opening and closing from the patio and bringing in cold air). The interior was very well decorated in sort of a Polynesian / Mexican hybrid type decor with many interesting lights, comfortable chairs and lots of plants. The Service: Service was top notch even though we had a brand new waitress....she was professional, well mannered, polite, and very knowledgable for being new. We were served appetizers on time and then main courses within the right amount of time after so as not to be too quick nor too slow...and she was very responsive to any special requests or condiments needed (from the kids mostly). Food & Drink: She offered us sparkling or still water and any cocktails. We took advantage of the Mojitos and the Tulum Lager which was really nice considering I am not normally a fan of Mexican beer. The mojitos were fresh, had real sugar cane and just the right amount of mint so as to not overwhelm the drink. The food was absolutely amazing. even though the Lobster was 975 pesos (abt $50) it was prepared and presented with an amazing amount of meat and done just right to my wife's pleasure....she is a sucker for a good lobster. I had the Grouper in reduced wine, garlic, and butter sauce preceded by the grilled octopus - all amazing quality and taste. My Oldest daughter had the grilled and coconut shrimp flambe' which was a fun treat for her with the flames being poured over in the sauce used with the dish (which was in a coconut husk). My daughter had the Cesar Salas (which was a few romaine heart leaves and some croutons -- not really what I would call a salad especially for the price but she was a bit upset they had no chicken for her to order. lastly, my son had the fish n chips (which is not something he would normally eat) but he absolutely loved the dish which came in a small silver bucket with an ample amount of lightly breaded fish for him to eat as a 12 yr old boy. Overall: FANTASTIC place for dinner, lunch, or whatever. Any day let alone a holiday would be a great time to eat at Freds...Despite the $250 (with tip) usd bill for our dinner it was a special holiday dinner for us and well worth the memories and time spent that evening at Freds! Everything was delicious! They also have a Kids club that I've never seen a restaurant before. This alone was amazing. After reading restaurant reviews, we chose Fred's for our anniversary dinner in Cancun. So glad we made this choice! Our reservation was made online, and we were seated promptly on the patio with a sunset view. Our food was excellent -- My husband absolutely loved the tuna appetizer and steak entree. As an anniversary treat, the staff surprised us with a sparkler dessert and champagne. It was perfect! Although the food and atmosphere were great, what stands out about Fred's is the service. We decided to go to Fred's on a whim as it was right across from our hotel. Then we were immediately greeted by the hostess. She was very pleasant and asked us about food allergies and also for contact info should we leave something behind. We were then welcomed by the Server Raul who told us that another server and he would be taking care of us. We ordered appetizers,Calamari and soups that were on point. Everything was fresh and hot. There was fresh bread and that also was tasty. Throughout the whole evening Raul Celo engaged with us on a personal level without ever taking away from our experience. My husband had to the Tuna and I had the Salmon both of which were incredible. The ambiance was perfect :) Then we're had table side ice cream made for us with French cream and liquid nitrogen. This is an upscale restaurant in the Cancun resort area. It was easy walking distance from the Marriott hotels. Food was really good and service was good also. The one thing I noticed about Mexico is, you are " on isle time", so don't expect to get your drink order, your food order, your food, and the check in in a quick turn around time. Recommend any seafood dishes. Tostada mixto was the best ever! This restaurant is usually fairly busy and seems to be very popular for birthday celebrations. You will get a large sparkler and a short birthday song. While in Mexico always be aware of the automatic tip tacked in the end. This restaurant adds a 35% tip so travelers beware. Your are free to tip at another rate so double check the bill and don't just pay the amount listed. And be careful to not double tip. read more

Just a short walk from the JW Marriott makes Fred's a fantastic option for dinner facing the lagoon. Beautiful sunset views; unfortunately, it was too windy, and cool to enjoy our meal outside this day. Our mocktails were delicious. The ceviche was great but they only offer saltine crackers out of a package for delivery- it needs a nice crostini or something. The real hit of the meal was the whole grouper. It was artistically plated- very cool and eye catching but the best part is how they prepared it, lightly fried and perfectly seasoned, small cubes bites for easy eating. I loved it so good! The bone marrow was really good but they only give you one- need at least two for sharing and I would've loved to see again, some kind of crostini and jam for delivery. I used the saltines again for this. The octopus was nice and tender with great flavor as well. They surprised us a with a beautiful sparkling desert for our anniversary so that was fun but there were many wait staff working this evening yet the service was very slow coming to the table. Sunset views at this place were amazing! Worth the walk across the street from the JW, as you can get more value for your money for sure! The food was fantastic (with the exception of the kid's meatballs which they took off the bill)! We had a shrimp cocktail that was wonderful, a jalapeno margarita that was yummy, and coconut shrimp with a rum sauce that they lit on fire. It was a fun presentation! We also ate dessert which was yummy! The decor was so nice. We felt a little under dressed as most of the clientele was wearing dresses and we were in shorts, etc. I highly recommend this place! Went here on a recent birthday trip, the one plus was that the ambiance and views outside were nice. As far as the food, it was very average, but nothing was worse than the service. Servers were pushy and we felt forced to order the more expensive items on the menu. When we were seated we were told that this restaurant does not have a drink menu, which we later found out was a lie. Once we did order margaritas we were never told the price (because they would not show us a menu). At the end of the dinner when we received the bill we noticed that we were up charged for ordering "premium" liquor which we never requested. Had an excellent experience at Fred's. Our waitstaff lead by Angel was amazing. They were on top of everything, however, were never intrusive. The Caesar salad was great. The tuna mignon was possibly the best tuna I've ever had anywhere. My wife had the crab enchiladas and really enjoyed them as well. The manager, Paola, took phenomenal care of us from the moment we arrived until the very end. Though out the evening, Paola consistently checked on us & made sure we were well taken care of. We sat inside as it was hotter than hell, however the sunset from the deck was stunning. We started with Shrimp cevechie which was delicious. I went for broke and got crab claws. I'd say they were not worth the price. They were OK. I suspect they were frozen at one time. That was a bummer. That's why I'm deducting a star. We both had blackened Snapper. When I started looking for places to eat in Cancun, I couldn't decide between Fred's and another place, so I decided to try both on different nights. I'm glad I did, because we liked the atmosphere a lot better at Fred's than the other place. You feel welcome from the moment you walk in here. Known for their fresh oysters and seafood, everything seems to be fresh and local. We made reservations on OpenTable... Something I suggest as the place is located across from several hotels and was fairly busy when we were there. We ordered a half bottle of wine and the shrimp cocktail to start. A stack of fresh tortillas and sauces came out "on the house" along with a small shot of shrimp broth. The shrimp cocktail was delicious; the shrimp was excellent and the cocktail sauce was so/so. For my main course, I did the lobster tacos in a chipotle sauce and we split an order of grilled asparagus. Tim did the grilled tuna steak, cooked rare. His tuna steak was huge and grilled just right.. It just lacked any seasoning. Same with the grilled asparagus; perfectly cooked but lacking seasoning. My lobster tacos were just the right size. A mixture of lobster and a chipotle/mayonnaise sauce in two flour tortillas piled with cilantro and cabbage. Having these without and aides would make for a really small meal though.. Or a decent appetizer. For dessert, the banana Nutella cake caught my eye so we went with it. A layered dish of banana flan with a chocolate cake came out with Nutella spread on top with a side of vanilla Hagen Daz ice cream. Way too much for two of us to eat, so we picked that the chocolate crust and the ice cream. As the finale to our meal, our server brought shaved ice with vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon for us to try. By this point we were beyond stuffed and only had a couple of bites, but it was delicious too. Everything from the service to the food to the atmosphere was a solid 5 star experience.
