Really good deals with the fish. Parking is always easy. Even when crowded somehow they always make sure you're okay when waiting on you. Only downfall is the ribs - leave those out. No meat on them. It doesn't really matter how good the food is if you can't get waited on. Sat at the table for 10 minutes waiting on a server. Both waitresses walked by several times but was too busy! I walked up to a server and asked if I could order and she said NO because there was 2 tables ahead of me! No worries, I will take by money somewhere else. Back in the day I didn't eat fish but my late mother always loved this place. I went with her on occasion and found it to be a good experience. Just the hush puppies are worth the trip. I now go every time I get a chance and have come to understand why she loved it. Especially since I have now come to appreciate catfish. Decent menu selection, good portion sizes. The catfish is only average with a bit of an unpleasant fishiness to some pieces. Inconsistent quality there. Good breading. I expected better quality for a signature item. The stuffed crab was good. Typical deep fried style and generously stuffed. The crab filling was very good, flavor and texture were tops. Recommended item. Cole slaw below average with a slightly unpleasant oily flavor. French fries were very good. Crispy and flavorful, a recommended item. The hush puppies are tops! The best I've tried in the region. Good size, moist yet light textured and crispy, a very good choice. Brown beans were served first along with hush puppies, only average flavor but passable. Sliced onion was served later with entree, should be with beans. They were out of pickled tomatoes due to a supplier shortage. I dropped in for lunch one day recently and was ecstatic about the great fish and sides I was served, and the superb service from the wait staff. They first brought out a big basket of some of the best hushpuppies I've ever eaten, and my $8 meal included three huge perfectly fried catfish fillets (crunchy outside and tender flaky inside), a big serving of slow-cooked bacony pinto beans and some delicious creamy cole slaw. Fred's will be on my must-visit list now every time I'm in Batesville. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for really great catfish. read more

10 Stars if I could. The Cat Fish is absolutely stunning! I'm not even a huge fan of it, but this was great, a must try! The service was second to none, it even beats upscale restaurants in major metro areas. I wanted to try the grilled catfish, three flavors to choose from, as well as the fried cat fish. The staff made it happen, I was able to get 2 grilled and the fried. Combine this with the beans, slaw, hush puppies, pickled tomatoes,and choice of side, and you have a wonderful and very filling southern made meal. They made me fill very welcome and was there for my every need and then some, but not too over the top. A genuine care to provide a warm welcome. First time to eat at Fred's in 15 years. Has not changed. Hush puppies, pickled tomatoes, and beans served after ordering. Cat fish was excellent. Fried shrimp smack but good. Fries ok. Baked potato ok. Replacement fresh hot hush puppies were brought to table replacing one remaining without asking for some more. Ambience non-existent other than the building was once a church. Prices were in line with other fish houses. Will go back without waiting another 15 years since I now live reasonably close. read more

Hands down, the best catfish I've ever had. I've never been tempted to order anything else, but whenever people I'm with get something else it always gets good reviews too. The catfish is perfectly cooked and not greasy. Fries are tasty, hushpuppies yummy, and the pickled green tomatoes a real treat! The atmosphere isn't the best, but it is SO worth stopping here. Was visiting from California. LOVED LOVED LOVED the Cajun Shrimp. Food was excellent as was the service. Although there was one hostess and one server I would just as soon punch in the face as to have to deal with them. But OUR server Lynnleigh was awesome. Very sweet and attentive.
