    Look for the purple umbrellas!

Awesome free tour! On my last day of Barcelona, I decided to take one of the popular free tours to take in more of the city that I may have missed. I found Barcelona Free Tours on Yelp as they had raving 5-star reviews. I signed up on their website and voila, that was it! Quick and simple. The day before the trip I received a confirmation reminder that stated the time to meet as well as the meeting location. At 15:00, I was able to find the tour guides at the meeting location near the Placa de Catalunya, near the fountain. The tour guides will be holding a purple umbrella and wearing purple shirts (very helpful). They will check you in and then ask you a couple questions: How did you find out about the tour? How long are you in Barcelona? Will you be going to Madrid? The tour guides provide several different tours that include: A Gothic Quarter tour, a tour around Passeig de Garcia and Segalla Famila Church, an underground tour that includes taking the metro and also a tour of Barcelona's cannabis locations and history on how that started (sounded really cool). However, I decided to take the Gothic Quarter tour with the lovely and handsome John! There was a total of 16 people on the tour which I thought was a great amount! John was absolutely educational and really took his time to explain the history around the area. He also was nice enough to send a list of additional local restaurants and bars around the area, upon email request. Some things I learned on the tour: *Barcelona has a really big penguin population and they get it, locals don't like them; although the visitors always think it's cool to feed them (disgusting if you ask me!) Anywho, Barcelona is trying to reduce the penguin population in the most non-animal cruelty way possible. Therefore, the vendors around the Placa de Catalunya area have penguin food that they feed them, but the food has birth control in it. Haha! I thought that was absolutely funny! Is it just me? Humm. *Barcelona is such a diverse city that attracts visitors from all over with their amazing beaches! * The tour gave me a better idea of the Gothic Quarter, Born District and Las Ramblas * I saw the Santa Maria del Pi that took 70 years to build; wowzers! *Pi is the Catalan world for Pine. This was such a great tour that I recommend to everyone, it's so rich in history. And the best part? It's a free tour, however, once the tour is complete you pay what you think the tour was worth. Just know that many of the tours you pay for will run you about 15-20€. Big thank you to John for such a wonderful tour! I definitely will recommend this to anyone coming to Barcelona!

Augustina was a fabulous tour guide of the Gothic Quarter. She was knowledgeable about history, entertaining with her stories, and easy to follow and hear. A must-do if you're in Barcelona!

Took the "free"walking tour of the Gothic district. Our tour guide was a smart and enthusiastic young lady called Carson. The group was about 10 people so never felt crowed. Carson was very knowledgeable and provided context of the cultural and political history and how it flowed into the current environment. At the end of the tour you pay what every you think the tour was worth - interesting concept and would definitely do it again. Highly recommend this type of walking tour instead of a hop on and type bus tour

The pace was perfect -- a great combination of eating, walking, touring, and photospots so just when you were getting full, you had the opportunity to have a little walk to work up an appetite for the next stop. We went to at least 5 separate eateries (although I honestly I started losing count), some of them quite historic including the famed 4 Cats cafe. The tour even vetted out the best churros and best chocolate in the city (separate businesses), and brokered a deal that enabled us to try them together! Brian was a delight and in many of the restaurants, clearly knew the staff and owners -- this was great as it made us feel like VIPs and also gave us some insight into the history of the business -- some of them had been open and family run for many years! And weirdly -- even though Brian is American-born -- I felt that to be a plus: he was able to answer some of the more "basic" questions I might have been uncomfortable asking to a local, and given his time spent living in Spain thus far, I felt like he was still able to give us a really down-to-earth, local introduction to the city. Due to the size of the group, we only went to places where they could make reservations and seat a large group in a private back room. So we didn't visit any truly hole-in-the-wall places, but all the food was good so we didn't really mind. I will say this tour is possibly better for the beginning of your visit to Spain rather than the end. My partner and I had visited San Sebastian prior to Barcelona, and so many of the foods Brian was "introducing" like boquerones and croquettes we had already enjoyed and indulged in many times before.

He speaks seven languages and has great world knowledge and stories. His love of Gaudi is undeniable but he backed up that assertion with facts and examples that made us all converts. He took some time to find a little bit about us and our touring style before launching our tour. I told him that I would often stray from the group but to go on without me. He complied except when he would have a nugget of knowledge. I was glad every time he pulled me back in and strayed less and less thereafter. WE had to split into two taxis heading to Sagrada Familia and one driver did not listen to Javier's instructions and dropped half of our group in the wrong spot. Javier was able to find them and then talked us into the basilica despite the fact that we were late to our appointment. Sagrada was the centerpiece of the tour - if not our entire time in Barcelona, for me - so that would have been a tragedy. Once inside, we saw the glory of Gaudi. We had a late addition of our 5th person and they were able to handle quite simply for us. The meeting of Javier went exactly as planned and, for what we got, the price was worth it. I'd rather pay more and get a first class experience than go with some cheap skip-the-line tour run by a college student. Javier is passionate about Gaudi, Barcelona and our satisfaction. Thank you, Javier and Forever Barcelona!

His attitude continued to be standoffish and condescending. We started the tour by Javier telling us he left Spain for a long time, but returned a few years ago to Barcelona because there's a lot of tourism and he does this for the money. He continued by saying "I wish you good luck with pickpockets here, don't take it personally if you get robbed", and then started with a bit of history about Barcelona. We have traveled Europe for over two months, doing free walking tours in each city we stayed at, and this was the first time we left a tour after 20 minutes. Javier's attitude was dispassionate, condescending, and you could tell he does not enjoy showing off Barcelona to travelers. Honestly, I thought his original comment about doing it for the money only was a joke, but soon realized it wasn't. Javier, I'm sorry I called you by the wrong name. I'm sure sometimes you also make mistakes, right? Even after apologizing to you, you made me feel unwelcome and out of place. Perhaps waiting for Sergio's tour would have been best. We were excited to take our first tour in Barcelona and the way you mistreated us left us with a very bitter taste in our mouths. It's unfortunate someone like you is showing this wonderful city to tourists. Perhaps you should reconsider your career. Hospitality doesn't suit you.
