Such a great small business with a friendly & helpful owner! I had the pleasure of stopping by this store to pick up a gift for a friend who likes ocean fishing. Pete helped me right away, and found me a couple of things all fishermen need, and my friend really liked the gifts. The store focuses on fishing poles, reels and related equipment, but Pete is very knowledgeable and helpful for all sorts of fishing (and life) related matters. The tip off my wife's Shakespeare pole came off it was her dad's so it had sentimental value. I googled fishing pole repair and Just Fishing by Pete popped up. The owner is a wonderful guy. His treatment and helpfulness is amazing that has helped me become a repeat customer. His selection can vary based on what he buys but he has these baits called hookup baits and they catch a lot of seabass and alotnof other species. His prices are some of the best ever they are affordable and you can find calstars cheaper than anywhere else. His only new reels are Avets and Okumas but only conventional. But he has a wide selection of blanks to get a custom rod built on as well as new calstars for only 500. read more

I had a old 2 speed Penn 15 KG I thought it broke on a huge Bluefin but Pete got it working and even did a tricky repair by having a stuck screw wired out I thought it would be pricey but it was extremely reasonable . The hometown tackle shop and expert on Rod Repair and Reel Repairs. A few years back I took him some rods to repair. One was a old trolling rod with one of the middle roller guides needing to be removed and replaced. When I picked it up I could not tell what one was replaced he had matched the wrapping so well. This year I got some more rods fixed and three reels done too. Pete is good for a fishing story or two if you got the time. And his selection of hooks is really good. Talk to him about used reels if you want to make a deal. I have invited him to talk to our fishing club Marina Del Rey Anglers up in MDR at our Thursday night meeting. So... Pete's is old school craftsmanship and customer service. Don't bother going anywhere else for your rod and reel service. He always has some high quality used gear as well. Super nice and very knowledgeable about all things fishing. It's not uncommon to bring a reel in and watch him change a spring or a bearing and grease it up for you while you wait. Can't believe it took me almost 20 years to review Just Fishing. Pete is a gem to the local fishing community. He has hooked me up with gear over the years, new and used, and he's really a nice guy. You have to be able to go with the flow in the shop; its the polar opposite of a Turners/Dicks/ etc. You will have to be cool with him chatting with his pals, but you will leave happy, a bit more educated on your own gear, and way better off than in any other place IMO. If you need a new rod/reel, he makes them custom, repairs everything, and has a ton of old used parts .... it's the fishing shop you are looking for unless you are the 'swipe the visa and jet' kind. Either way, going to Pete's will save you time on the water. Pete likely has forgotten more about reels, fishing, tackle, technique etc. than most people have ever learned. He used to work a commercial boat back in the day (at least I think he told me that in like 2003 or something), and if you watch him fix a reel you will see that experience (just be warned ... he will tease you if you have a Newell, or a yak ... I have both and I still love Pete). I realized I hadn't reviewed him yet when I looked up his hours, since I am heading down to get another rod/reel - hopefully used, and after he lets me know what he would use. Pete is great .. i had him repair a few reels and each time he was able to make them as good as new .. he's VERY reasonable on his prices .. Recently i needed to get two reels serviced and all i kept hearing from several shops is - " it'll be three weeks before we can look at em , then we'll call you and tell you what parts may need to be ordered " . Then i went came here !! Pete was able to service and repair Both reels that very day ... Later - A third reel i had serviced - was ready a in 24 hrs ... I have all my repair needs done here !! Well that was easy! While fishing last weekend my Penn reel broke. An old 500 that I got from a friend now always spun both directions. Seemed like everyone on the boat had the same advice for me: "Take it to Pete, he can fix it with his eyes shut & 1 hand behind his back". Well that was pretty close to true! Before I could even explain what was wrong, Pete had diagnosed the problem as I was fiddling with the reel. Pete was operating the store single handed today so while he fixed my reel he also took 3 phone calls, received 2 repair jobs, delivered 2 finished jobs, and talked about his own car to the mechanic from around the corner who popped in the back door. And he was working on my reel with one hand while the other hand held the phone. The man stays productive! So my reel was repaired on the spot, and even with all the interruptions I was in & out pretty quickly, something like 20 minutes. As he took my reel all apart with the quickness that comes from much practice he pointed out that this was an easy one, a little ratchet was just stuck, & some grease would fix that. He made sure to grease several other parts while he was there too. It it clear that Pete deals with repeat customers & he totally knows what he is doing. 5 stars. read more

I have always found my bits and pieces at Pete's. Just went in today for some guides and for a gifted blank that I was not familiar with and he had the notes from previous builds and marked my blank for me and picked out the proper guides. I also had a reel i picked up somewhere that was missing a rather rare sized clamp and guess what? Pete had one. All the old tackle shops in the South Bay have closed up one by one because they didn't have a Pete. My Son has had Pete build him two Jig Sticks. Boy they look nice. I build my own but I had to think twice before I started this one. read more

I got some fishing gear from my father but needed to get it serviced. ALthough I've driven by this place a hundred times, I really found it on Yelp. Here's how I did.... I took 3 reels to get serviced fro Pete. He is a customer serviced based guy. As soon as I walked in I was greeted. We spent about an hour talking and he promised my reels by 3:00pm the next day. I went in at 2:00pm the following day and he was just finishing up the last reel. My experience was very good. We talked fishing, we shared a few laughs and I got my gear back shiny and clean. He gave me information I needed and sent me on my way. I paid about $81 for all three reels to be serviced. About $25 a piece plus tax. I highly recommend Pete for all service needs. Thanks Pete! you have to go and talk with Pete-better yet support him by buying! this guy has been in the shop for 30+ years and knows his stuff- really helped me with tips of how to repair my Newell 437 reel especially using substitute parts (original not available since Newell company closed doors long time ago) Pete is a wealth of knowledge and really interesting guy to talk to- even knew why I as looking for a Newell broadbill G500 series reel- not saying why my friends and I love these reels- you have to go and ask him his shop has both brand new and refurbished reels not to mention rods galore and lures. and another neat thing is that his network of other neighborhood fishing shops is great- they all support each other so can really help out when you are in need of classic gear or parts. awesome old neighborhood store and great guy! read more

Pete is a great guy who knows a lot about fishing, both fresh and salt! His shop is primarily geared for the local saltwater fishing enthusiast, and he is always busy wrapping rods and fixing reels. He's a great person to get advice from, and he regularly consigns hard to find items like old Newell reels, Harnell and Truline rods, and rare jigs. Avoid this place for reel servicing. They flat out didn't want to do my reels. They said they were worked on when in fact the weren't ever touched even after leaving them for 6 weeks. ( no exaggeration). They may do good rod wrapping but I wouldn't know. read more
