I find some of these reviews pretty harsh. A big WOW what the... I found FreeDive n Spear to be very informative, extremely helpful and friendly. The owners, like me, are immigrants to the U.S. and culturally we have many differences in our social tact and approach to the average American, work in progress :-). I am a great believer in time and patience and visit this store every month or so. I know what I want before going there, call for a price and if it's not for me, I can try and buy elsewhere. However, most stuff I will purchase from FreeDive n Spear as I can actually touch the items physically. A few good examples would be when purchasing masks and fins. I could buy these items online for a few dollars less, but the fact you can try masks on, ensure that there is a good seal, make sure masks are not digging into the bridge of your nose and sit with fins on for 10-15 mins to make sure they are not pinching your feet is key! They have a tremendous selection of dive and spearing gear for sale. I have had nothing but good advice from Harry and thank him for it. I did have issues with a Riffe float line that the stainless ring broke on. I called Riffe immediately, they asked for photos, I sent them. I told them I had two of their float lines of the same design, they offered to pay shipping costs back to them to redo the connections on both lines. I told them I would take care of it if they sent me the parts. Arrived the next day on my doorstep. I add this as I saw one customer complaining about FreeDive n Spear not exchanging what they claimed to be a faulty snorkel. Why should the store be responsible for the defect? Perhaps if you had taken the correct route and communicated that to Riffe, you may have got a replacement from them. Better luck next time. ;-) read more

Harry is great. I came in to get a mask before a freediving class, and Harry very meticulously spent over an hour with me to find the perfect mask. We tried on sooooo many masks! He wasn't rushed at all, if anything it was me who wanted to be done with it, but Harry insisted we get it just right. That was about a year ago and it's been hands down the best mask I've ever had in 25 years of scuba, snorkeling, and freediving. I was thinking about that diving in Panama last month, and figured I should let him know here. :) read more

i have to say that I am very baffled to read all these negative reviews, because this is by far the best dive or freedive store I've ever been to, and I've ended up buying a lot of stuff there over the last six years. I was never pressured to spend more money, I was always treated really well by Harry and his wife, and on top of that, I got really good advice from Harry about diving, working on my shooting skills, etc. In fact, Harry fixed a sinus problem that a very good diving ENT had not been able to fix, in spite of multiple visits and prescriptions. Harry heard my symptoms, asked me if I'd changed masks, which I had, and explained that the new mask might be leaking very slightly, so that tiny amounts of seawater were going up my nose when I dive straight down, and irritating my sinuses. He was absolutely right, and he wasn't even trying to sell me a mask. I just went back to using my old one, and three years later I have no more problems. I have many more examples of getting great free advice from Harry, as well as buying spearguns, shafts, fins, wetsuits, and other gear from his store and being very happy with them. PLEASE read the filtered reviews. They are more realistic then these 7 good reviews. apparently, others had the same issues with Harry and his overpriced store... No Ka Oi for $960... get out of here. I paid $640 for my No Ka Oi with Riffe slip tip from Dive N Surf. Harry is the new kid on the block for spearfishing, but is the worst speargun vendor I have ever met or even heard of. I feel bad for the two people who bought products from him and they broke and he says its always your fault even if the product was the issue. For great service and deals, go to Dive N Surf and talk to Matt or Al. Also Al does some really affordable trips to baja for spearfishing and he is really nice and rigged my gun up for free, unlike Harry who wouldn't do it because I didn't get the gun from him. read more

This was our second visit to this store. We (my 15 yr old free diving/spearfishing son)were welcomed with cold stares each time. Male and female store owners - looked at us as if we were in the wrong place each time. First time - it took awhile but we did get the woman to help us and be friendly. She ended up giving us a discount and a free t-shirt after spending $300ish dollars. This time we were seeking advice on an old spear gun and the proper bands to purchase for small prey. We were welcomed with a smirk then told our gun was too old and they would not sell us their bands. (No chit chat, no recommendations or up-sell). When we asked to see a new gun in a $150 price range he said he had one. But didn't move to show it to us until we asked after an awkward period if silence. When my son asked if the man thought this would be good for Halibut his response was "I could shoot a halibut with this". That's all. No other words were said and we left. My son was so angry and disappointed! He was looking for these "professionals" to give him some advice, have a conversation, maybe give him some ideas on a new gun. There are not many shops who specialize in this sport. But we will NEVER go back here!! read more

I went in for a replacement spear shaft for a gun that I have. Harry was quite condescending and told me that I didn't know what I was doing, and that I had no business buying what I was looking for. Tried to sell me a completely different gun, and when I said that I just want gun that I have to work ( a gun that I've been using for over a year and I like very much), he asked me if there would be anything else (in that *please leave* tone) and turned his back on me. Watched him take care of another customer is a completely different manner. Left me feeling like a total schmuck and completely baffled. Maybe he decides he likes you ($$$) or maybe he insults you and kicks you out, I recommend not going in at all and instead going to Sturgill Spearfishing or SpearAmerica. My buddy and I went in to buy some fins but had some questions. The male owner seemed okay when we first came in but as soon as we mentioned that we didn't want anything too expensive his attitude abruptly changed. It felt like he couldn't wait for us to leave so we ended up doing just that without buying anything. During the whole visit his wife was behind the counter glaring at us like we were shoplifters - shifting her position as we walked around so that she could keep an eye on us. We're both in our late 30's and dressed casually in shorts/t-shirts so hardly hoodlums. Not sure why folks would want to open a shop when they clearly have no people skills. I will say it looked like they had a good selection of gear but they can keep it with that attitude. read more

Good variety of freedive gear and you can wrangle for prices, but the owner is not always upfront and honest. Mislead me about a gun "that he personally selected and detailed" to justify the high price. Found exact same gun for much less online. read more

I'm sure it must be a great a store but I'll never go there for sure. I called them up and started asking questions about camo wet suits. After my 3rd question I was rudely cut off and told - "I'm sorry we have a lot of customers so I'm not going to answer any more of your questions" and hung up. I was asking him about brands they carry and the thickness of the suits I wanted to drive from Woodland Hills to Hermosa Beach to go to their shop this weekend if this guy wasn't so rude, they would have had another customer. read more

I have been shopping there about 5 years now and Harry and his wife have been both helpful and friendly every time. Once I was in there and a guy lost his snorkel and wanted a refund. While I am thinking what a dope this guy is, Harry was calm and continued to talk reason to him long after I would have kicked him out. While it is not internet prices they have spent hours helping me select what I really want and in the end it has saved me from buying items online that I would not have been happy with. I will continue shopping at his shop for my freediving needs as long as I can freedive. read more

Best spearfishing shop i have ever been too. Harry is the owner and walked me through everything when i bought my first gun. He will help you get started, great customer service and a realy cool guy. The prices are good, i found it is cheaper than online and he only sells high quality stuff. This shop is a joke. Yeah sure they do have a good selection. But the owner a is a f*cking asshole. Went in the shop to look for a new dive mask and saw a mask I Liked but had never seen before, so I was looking it up online on my phone. He proceeded to confront me to tell me he thinks it rude to compare items online even though I wasn't worried about the price I planned to make a purchase in store not online. He was very condescending and I don't care who you are, if you hope to develop a successful business owner you don't speak to your customers that way, I hope this man doesn't intend to try and expand his business and open more stores because it will never happen when you chase half your customers away . It caught me very off guard, ive never heard a store owner speak to a customer in such a rude tone. Needless to say I did not and will not ever spend money in this shop. harry sold me a the 42 inch tv on his wall which he led me to believe was in working condition.he turned it on for me, it was working. i liked it, i decided to buy it and he wrote me up a receipt. i brought it home, plugged it in, thirty minutes later it wasn't working. the picture died. he lied to me about the quality of the t.v. i would assume that this is how he conducts the rest of his business. i called him up about it, he said he'd call me back, he didn't. i got ripped and I'm not happy about it, but what can I do? nothing. read more
