Ice cream waffle with caramel sauce
    Lauren C.

Delicious! As a party of 2 we showed up around 9-9:30 on a Thursday night with no reservations. They were able to sit us right away. There was about 3 other groups in the shop aside from us. The server spoke perfect English and was happy to help us. We ordered: Their hot dog is so good! The bun is nice and soft and the taste is perfect. The melted cheese with the crunchy onion bits on it is best. This meal comes with a side of fries that were a bit oily or they needed to change their oil. Also ordered the ice cream waffle! I was happily surprised that they didn't use a Belgian style waffle and used a thinner style waffle. You can choose your sauce such as chocolate, fruit, or caramel, and your ice cream. I picked their newest flavor that tastes like a vanilla flavor with chocolate chips mixed in.

They were totally full when we arrived, and seemed to not want to let us know that there would likely be tables available soon. We asked to do take-out, which they enthusiastically obliged; 3 minutes after we ordered, many tables freed up. Lol. We got a barbacoa pizza and a vegetable pizza (each €14). The pizza came out in about 10 minutes. Both were tasty, especially the vegetable pizza, which had wonderfully marinated vegetables (peppers, zucchini, mushrooms and onions). The barbacoa was nice too, having vegan bacon, corn, and BBQ sauce. Solid spot for vegan pizza and other casual foods but done creatively and with class. Recommended.

Pura Vida is definitely one of my favorite vegan spots in Madrid, and let me tell you why. Pura…read moreVida knows what they're doing when it comes to vegan food. Their menu is a great mix of classic Spanish eats (tortilla de patata, bocadillos) and crowd pleasers, like pizza and burgers. My favorites: -- Bocata de Calamares (8,50€) // This is a Spanish classic, and it's essentially a sandwich featuring calamari rings with a cream cheese-like spread on a baguette. Before you knock it, try it. It's literally so good, and the one at Pura Vida is easily the best vegan version I've had. -- Lágrimas de Heura (6,95€) // So, these are basically chick'n nuggets made with the most popular vegan meat substitute in Spain, Heura. They're perfectly sized little morsels, kind of like popcorn chicken size, and fried to an ideal crisp. The agave-mustard dip on the side is also incredible and balances out the richness. -- Pincho de Tortilla de Patata (3,50€) // If you haven't tried tortilla de patata in Spain, I'm not sure where you've been eating. It's a must. Out of all the vegan ones I've tried in Madrid, Pura Vida's is my favorite. -- Alemana Pizza (12,95€) // My friend was craving a pizza, so we went for the Alemana which is pretty simple with tomato sauce, cheese and vegan sausage. The sauce has a surprising depth of flavor and the cheese is good, too. I wouldn't hesitate to share a pizza again if I were in the mood for one. So, now that we've established that the food at Pura Vida is great, let's move on! Overall, I really like the vibe at Pura Vida because it's laidback but slightly above a true taberna, so it's a good spot if you want a solid dinner or just a bite and drink on the terraza. The only reason I docked a star is because the service can definitely lack. The servers often get overwhelmed or simply don't come by for like, literally, 30 minutes at a time some days. Price-wise, some dishes are a little higher than others but for the most part, it's reasonable. Pura Vida will continue to be one of our go-to places in Madrid, especially when we're craving some Spanish classics and a solid pour of vermut.

They probably prefer it that way because the quiet vibe appeared to be part of the ambiance they're seeking here. We just found it by chance on Google Maps as an alternative to the beef-heavy eateries in the neighborhood. We just felt a need to eat healthier. The menu was small and appetizing, and we treated ourselves to two 3,5€ glasses of Zafra Blanco, a crisp Spanish white wine that freshened our palates. We started our meal with a complimentary helping of a "creamy" beetroot dip accompanied by lightly crisped pita chips (Photo 7). Next came the 12€ Spinach and "Parmesan" Croquettes, six lightly fried, falafel-like spheres drizzled with cashew nut mayo (Photo 8). They provided the ideal bites. Jamie went for their signature 15€ Moroccan Bowl with corn couscous, beetroot falafel, sweet potato, spinach, cherries, pickled cucumber, tomato, and fresh dates drizzled with mint yogurt sauce (Photo 6). It was quite a cornucopia of flavors that meshed quite well together with the falafels the particular standout. I decided to go for the 8€ Brochette of "Chicken" with chunks of zucchini and onion and satay sauce over a bed of sweet potato noodles (Photo 9). I'm not sure what the "chicken" was, but the flavor and texture was surprisingly spot-on. At the same time, I'm glad I limited myself to one skewer because I wanted to save room for dessert and the 4€ bottle of sparkling Green Apple Cider (Photo 4). Jamie and I settled on the delightful 6,5€ Tiramisu Cake dusted with Cocoa and swirled with Toffee (Photo 10). We finished our meal with 2€ cups of Cortado with the right amount of warm, steamed milk (Photo 5). We shared the Chickweed, marinated asparagus, breaded artichoke and Romesco sauce appetizer (€9) to start, a wonderfully curated dish with perfectly breaded and fried artichokes (not too oily), impeccably marinated asparagus and some leaves (chickweed), with a fantastic Romesco sauce. Fantastic starter. Then we shared two mains -- the Bolognese Lasagna (€13) and Shimenji Mushooms Long Sandwich (€12.5). The lasagna was extremely decadent, smothered in smoked bechamel sauce -- the inside had seitan, some veggies, a passata (tomato) sauce, and served with some parmesan-like crackers. This was almost a bit too over-the-top, but in small amounts (split between two of us), it worked well. The sandwich was simple but excellent -- wonderfully textured shimenjis carry this dish, along with the vegan garlic mayo, fresh arugula and tomato. The bread was fresh and fluffy too. Very friendly service. Great place to hang out and enjoy a long, leisurely meal. Highly recommended.

(My American stomach still craves dinner at 7-8ish.) There was only one other table in the place. The restaurant was rather quiet, even with the music playing. What I ordered: I got the Vietnamese plum rolls. They were topped with bean sprouts and red pepper and came with a spicy asian sauce and a small portion of white rice. The flavor of the rolls was delicious! It didn't taste too fruity. It was more of a savory dish. My only complaint is the rice was still a little hard, but it was bearable.
