Croissant, Mango Coconut Cheesecake and a Palmier. Two cafe con leche and a cold milk.

Cheesecake. For breakfast. Not just any cheesecake, but coconut mango cheesecake. The whole space smells wonderful as you walk in and you can see them making the goods in the back. The space is small and bustling, but not noisy. We had a few minute wait for a table but it was worth it. I was set to transact in Spanish but the staff heard my family talking and just directed us in English that is far better than my Spanish. We sat and ordered and relaxed a few minutes after we were done, long enough to order a couple of cortados and a fruit tart to go. We're going back on our last day and I'm excited to try something else. We went back a second time. This time it was red velvet cake, a fruit tart and a cinnamon roll (this was the winner but don't tell the kid). Everyone was really kind but Desiree went above and beyond. She remembered us, let me order and communicate in Spanish, and made us feel welcome.

I will remember this café!! It was exquisite. The croissant (unpictured) sits at a table with the best of them -- incredibly buttery, layered, fluffy, and crispy all at the same time. I also got a chocolate-pistachio-raspberry tart. Those are some of my favourite ingredients individually, so a combination of them all is right up my alley. It was definitely a bit too sweet. Would love to go back and sample some of their other treats!

Excellent desserts with great visual appeal. The tarts are utterly sensational. I highly recommend this cake shop!

Motteau has been my favorite bakery in Madrid for years now. As someone who loves to bake, I have so much respect for what they crank out of this tiny kitchen-- and for the buttery, flaky, perfect croissants that you can catch if you're lucky! I recommend following them on Instagram and keeping tabs on their stories so you are one of the first to know if there are croissants that day. Besides the famous croissants, I always get the gorgeous lemon tart, that's a perfect combination of delicious crust, zingy lemon filling, and creamy, sweet meringue on top. Besides being delicious it's extremely instagrammable . The only downside (which isn't a downside in many ways) is that Motteau is a super small space. While I love that neighborhood bakery feel, it is tricky to find a table during peak hours. If you're ok with waiting for a short time, or you don't mind grabbing your sweets to-go, then the size won't be an issue for you!

Pastry bag containing my amazing palmera!

Phenomenal French bakery in the heart of Madrid! A small French cafe, tucked away in a quiet part of the city. They speak English, Spanish, and French. Everyone I encountered was extremely kind and helpful! There are some tables inside, but a few outside to relax while enjoying your coffee. I even got to see Motteau himself, at least I asume, since his face and beard perfectly matched the ones printed on the bags. I enjoyed a buttery and flaky croissant of similar quality to ones I've had in France. I also got a latte with oat milk, as they offered many lactose alternatives. But the real show stopper was the palmera, I ended up getting another one to bring home. To this day, it was the best pastry I've ever eaten. Crunchy and flaky, so delicate, with a subtle lemon hint. It had this amazing glazed sugar coating, like most palmeras, but this was not excessive or overpowering. Amazing!!! If you're in Madrid and looking for a nice start to your day, this is the place!

Almond flour cake. Delicious! Highly recommend.

I came to Madrid to celebrate my birthday and to Motteau for my birthday cake. It was a great decision on my part *pats self on back*. The shop is cute and cozy with its weathered exposed brick and black and white portraits on the wall. Service was awesome and the staff were very sweet. We bonded over our love for the end slice of a banana bread loaf. Their banana bread was really good too. Dense, moist, and packed with flavor. I also got the red velvet cake (delicious), and the almond flour cake with strawberries and pistachios (divine). The cake slices were generously portioned too. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Madrid.

Carrot cake. I was not expecting to find this walking the streets of Madrid, but there it was. All in glorious company of other great desserts. The shop itself is super inside as you can watch things being made and is bright and open. The owners were quite helpful and let me order right at closing time which I appreciated. They even let me finish and not rush. So I appreciated that a lot. Plus the carrot cake was awesome.

    The pastries look beautiful

Amazing bakery. Probably my favorite in Madrid. The people are extremely nice, friendly, welcoming and helpful. The pastries are absolutely delicious. I love that you can see what they are making in the kitchen behind the glass windows. I would go everyday if I could. The pastries are beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The palmier is delicious, the cakes are ok. The caramel puff covered in chocolate is to die for.

Based on the definitive opinions of travel vloggers, this appeared to be the place to get the fabled chocolate con churros. Jamie W and I made our way here through the labyrinth of streets near Puerta del Sol. It was early evening so no surprise there was a queue, but it moved quickly because this historic place was a model of efficiency. It's the type of place where you need to be ready to order the moment you're in front of the hostess. Luckily, we had made mental notes of what to order from one particular vlogger, so we were ready. It only took a minute to secure one of their marble cafe tables. Our order arrived fairly quickly. It consisted of a 2,5€ plate of Churros, six long sticks of chewy, delicious dough. Unlike the Mexican version, it wasn't dusted with sugar because the 3,7€ cup of Hot Chocolate was more than enough (Photo 8). Incredibly rich and only lightly sweetened. The churros might've been enough for a neophyte, but we double-downed with a 2,5€ order of two Porros (Photo 7). Porras are a thicker, doughier version of churros, so of course, they were our favorites because they really held the chocolate with assurance. Even though we went through two cups of hot chocolate, we still had 2,4€ cups of Cafes con Leche to wash it all down (Photo 10). It was an ideal dessert experience because who doesn't love awesome doughnuts? Definitely a must-gorge when in Madrid. As I was walking back towards Gran Via, I found El Riojano and stopped in. There is the pastry shop in the front and a cafe in the back. I was seated immediately and almost all of the tables were full. This is a very casual place. The menus were on the table, and a server came quickly to take my order. I ordered a cappuccino and a puff pastry with spinach and goat cheese. Both were good and exactly what I needed for a bit of energy. I asked for the pastry to be heated, and it was slightly warm (still cold in the middle). My only critique is that I wish the pastry had been a bit hotter. A steady stream of people arrived and departed while I was there so this seems to be a popular place. I would visit again and look forward to trying one of the bartolillo (traditional to Madrid).
