**Non Swimmers Rafting** 4.15.18 Okay so I don't know how to swim lol. I grew up doing lazy rivers and living my best non swimming life in the 4ft and under pools lol. I asked my bf if he wanted to go WWR for his birthday as a joke thinking he'd say no....but he didn't. So i was petrified lol. He wanted to go so bad so I bought the 5 mile tickets with lunch anyway. (If you have AAA use that 10% discount and it comes out to be the same price as the trip without lunch.) So days before the trip my bf says we should have a blast and asks why I'm so scared if we have life jackets and a seatbelt. *tire screeching sound* this crazy boy thought there were seatbelts on the raft! No wonder he was so down to do it! Plus they're no longer called life jackets since they don't guarantee life, they're personal flotation devices now. How comforting lol. Fast forward to the morning of....the weather prediction was 100% rain and 48 degrees. I woke up dreading this event. After this was all over my boyfriend told me I scared him with how quiet and phased out I was the morning of; just staring into the distance. But who wouldn't be, knowing you can't swim and the weather is mirroring your feelings! Lol So the actual experience was pretty cool I must say. I'd definitely go again. It was rainy but not storming as the weather predicted. And to top it all off we never fell overboard lol. So of course I loved that. It was just my beau and I plus the guide so that was cool. I was worried it would throw off the balance but clearly it didn't. Also he's a bigger guy and I'm a bigger girl so if you're worried about your weight it should be fine! The lunch was GOOD. I was expecting some basic ahh food I must say lol. But it was delightful and that hummus: OH MY. it's from some vegetarian place in Star mills and it will rock your world. I'm not even a hummus person. (Although maybe I am now). **Ed is such a great guy. He really helped motivate me to go from selecting the calm water experience to the full on WWR. He's hilarious too. ***dont forget to tip your guide. The photographers weren't there the day we went and I NEEDED. A picture to prove I had actually done this lol. We're experienced paddlers. We've canoed the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, kayaked in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico and raft wherever we have the opportunity. We were visiting relatives in Asheville, so "Hello, Opportunity!" We've previously rafted with the competition (NOC) and that's the first place i looked, but they didn't have a trip on the one day we'd be in the area, so I discovered "French Broad Adventures", and am glad I did! Their website was easily navigated, and booking a trip online was easy. Directions to their facility were accurate, and our GPS knew how to get there. Once we arrived, we were quickly checked in, had our mandatory safety talk and boarded an old school bus for the 20 minute drive to the launch point. We had another safety talk at the launch paint, and boarded ouR rafts. There were just three rafts on our trip. The water was low, but exciting. The guides were fun and pointed out interesting things on the river banks. We stopped for lunch about halfway. Lunch was sandwiches and was good, but in my opinion, unnecessary for the length of the trip. I'd have preferred to skip the food and keep going, but that's just me. All too soon our rafting adventure was over, with the opportunity to purchase optional pictures and t-shirts Before you start this, or most other "adventures", you'll probably be asked to sign a "waiver". This releases the "adventure" company from liability should you, the participant, be injured or die while participating in the "adventure". It's a good idea to actually read the waiver before you sign it and realize that there ARE risks. THIS IS NOT DISNEY WORLD! The rafts are not on a submerged track. The guides are good, but Mother Nature always has the last word, be it water levels, wind, storms, fallen trees or other complications. During our trip, our raft hit a rock and my wife fell out of the raft in the middle of one of the biggest rapids. Fortunately, our guide, Calvin, had the reflexes of a cat and the strength of a bear, and was able to grab my wife's ankle as she went under the raft, and drag her back aboard. That's why they make participants wear helmets and PFD's and sign waivers. She's OK with bruises and a noseful of river water but it's true that the risks increase along with the rewards. We went there today to do both a rafting trip and a zip-line adventure. We started the morning off rafting. The instructor, Craig I think was his name, gave the the directions and info was very humorous as well as properly informative. Our guide was Kristen, she was extremely knowledgeable, experienced, safe, courteous, and had a great sense of humor! She was amazing the way she navigated our raft and was great at giving instructions of what to do and when to do it. We always felt very safe with her, And she made it fun!! What a blast! I can't say enough. In the afternoon we went zip-lining. Our instructors were Taylor and Diedra- they were AWESOME! AWESOME!!! They were informative, extremely SAFE, had amazing people skills, and they truly loved what they did. Our group was fairly large, and they took the time to ensure we felt safe (and damn well made sure we were always tethered safely, Thank you), knew what we were doing, and made sure it was fun. They made this activity so enjoyable. These young ladies are a true asset to this organization!!!!! Thanks for such a great time!! All of the above mentioned guides we had today are amazing. (This organization should do their best to ensure that they take care of these fine people and keep them as they are damn good at what they do). I would love to give the guides a "10". Zip lining- made plans to go here after reading the reviews as well as information on their website. I'm glad we did! I came here with my wife and two kids (ages 16 and 10). We were the only ones in the group that was paired up with Lillie, Sydney, and Juice (wouldn't give his name but we learned it later on at the restaurant he was employed at before). Each one of the guides were professional and very knowledgeable about what they do. Everything was explained and they ensured safety was the number one priority. They also had a very good sense of humor and were very fun to be around. Definitely the types I could be friends with and hang out with if I lived here. The entire trip was very fun and one of the best experiences I've had up here in the mountains. My entire family enjoyed and wants to return and do this again. My little girl was very nervous at first but was put at ease by the guides and by the end was asking to come back as long as we have the same guides. If you are thinking of giving this a try then I'd recommend. This is a great spot for beginners and the experienced. I just want to say thank you to our guides. This trip was fun on its own but they took that fun to another level! read more

On our way back from Hilton Head, my family I and stopped for the night in Asheville, NC and the next morning visited the nearby town of Hot Springs. I had booked us on a calm water rafting trip with French Broad Rafting. Given that my wife and I had both rafted a handful of times in the past, I booked the unguided 4 mile trip through class I-II rapids. The minimum age limit for this trip is 4 years old, so our little one just barely qualified. After checking in at Hot Springs, we grabbed our gear and headed immediately for the water. There was another group that was going with a guide at the same time we were, so we let them go ahead and tried to follow them. But with only two paddlers we soon lost sight of them. Fortunately they have given us some verbal directions on which way was easiest to navigate throughout our three hour float. Once our trip was over the staff was waiting with a van to drive us back to our car and where we started. Our entire family loved the trip and wanted to go again right away. We will definitely be back. read more

RAFTING** What an amazing time we had. This was babe and I first time rafting and zip lining. On Monday we went rafting. We were a group of 5 and Rose was our tour guide. She was fantastic. We felt so comfortable with her and assured. All our fears were gone as soon as we hit the water. All the tour guides do an awesome job explaining everything. They are super thorough and go over everything you need to know, and not in a boring way where you forget everything. We did the longer tour with a lunch break in between. Originally I thought it was way too long but once we were there it was perfect. It really isn't as much work as you would expect, you paddle here and there a couple rows at a time. Most of the time the guide is doing the steering and the river is taking you downward. We were first timers and it wasn't bad at all. The lunch break was awesome. They actually grilled burgers and hot dogs in 10-15 minutes. They had peanut butter and jelly, chips, and the most delicious hummus I've ever tasted. Locally made with fresh ingredients. Also take advantage of the times the guide asks you if you want to jump off the raft. The water is so awesome and refreshing. It just feels so clean. Rose let us jump off two different times and we all floated down the river for some time. It was so peaceful. Awesome experience. Afterwards you can choose to buy the over priced pictures. 1 for $20, 2 for $30, or all for $42. Obviously being our first time ever rafting we bought the whole package. ZIP LINING** Two days later we came back for zip lining. Also our first time. Super fun experience as well. You get to do multiple lines, 10 I believe. Some shorter, some longer, some faster than others. All super fun. The scenery is amazing. The trees are beautiful. Our tour guides were also both very nice and informative. Their is a 250lb weight maximum so make sure if you are going with a big guy that they check beforehand. Also make sure to ask about the discount on the pictures if you already did one of the tours another day. Originally at rafting they told us we would be able to buy the zip-lining pictures for 25 instead of the full price of 42. When I went to pay the second day after zipping they charged me 42. I told the girl that the sign said it was 25 and she went on about how this had changed the day before they just hadn't taken down the sign. I was not okay with that, she obviously saw I was upset and finally gave it to me for 25. Other than that minor issue we had a fantastic time. Both experiences were amazing. So much fun. read more

We rafted section 8 of the French Broad River with a guide who could read the river well. Section 8 is relatively calm water but with large rocks in the stream that made it a challenge. Our guide, Jonah, expertly navigated the stream. We saw osprey, blue herons, ducks and geese. It was overall a great experience. read more

We had an amazing time! I have done whitewater rafting before on the New River which everyone raves about but I actually think this trip with French Board was better. We had Jim who is an amazing guide he even tried to call wild turkeys during our trip. He made the trip fun and exciting. I felt safe and even got a few good heavy splashes of water. We had such a great time with our guide Will on the French Broad! The 5 mile trip started with a wild ride in an old converted school bus, they kept us entertained with jokes all the way to our launch site. Trip had a bunch of small rapids, our guide Will took control of guiding us towards the best spot, all we had to do were a few strokes here and there. Had a stop to jump off a rock (super fun) and a nice stop for lunch - which was really good - sandwiches, chips, lemonade, cookies. We really had a great time. It was over too soon. 20 min bus ride back - more like a 20 min stand up comedy act. We had a blast the whole trip!! read more
