21 mar 2020 our 3.5 lb yorkie - Bella - was brought into Animal Medical Center Lubbock TX & seen by…read moreDr. Justin Propp. Her front arms had been buckling & she needed X-rays to further deduce if the cause was physical or neurological after glycoflex [glucosamine] consistently given over 6 months - didn't make a difference. Dr. Justin Propp prescribed Bella gabapentin & advised an MRI as the next step. Luckily, once home w/Bella in NM, we were able to smell that the gabapentin had a sweet grape aroma. While some sweeteners are harmless to humans such as xylitol, it's quite the opposite when it comes to animals. Xylitol is TOXIC to them; likely causing seizures, permanent brain damage & death. W/out knowing if this smell was a harmless sweetener or poison, on 30 Apr 2020 we emailed amcLbkwebsite@gmail.com & directly asked if the gabapentin they gave Bella contained xylitol. On 31 Apr 2020 we received an email response stating, "So I spoke with our Office Manager and he stated that the Gabapentin Oral Suspension does contain Xylitol but at such a low dose that it is not toxic to the patient taking it. We have been using it for a long time with no issues regarding our patients." At the time, I was so consumed with getting Bella into a neurologist during Covid that it didn't even cross my mind to leave a review which could have prevented another fur baby parent from having to deal with this. Bella at the time was 3.5LBS (she's now 4lbs) so ANYTHING toxic would be absolutely more dangerous to a small animal - similar to how birds die from PTFE DUE TO THEIR SIZE. Regardless, gabapentin is a great nerve pain medication, anti anxiety, as well as anti-seizure medication for pets. The danger when adding toxic xylitol is that it affects animals by likely causing seizures. So the worst thing you could do for a pet who is having seizures is to give them gabapentin containing xylitol. Likely to cause more seizures, & if you don't know there's xylitol in it & you increase the dose &/or frequency, the seizures will likely increase in parallel. *Bella wasn't having seizures, but I'm pointing this out in the event that anyone reading this [current or future client] w/a pet having seizures could at least be aware of this life saving detail. So regardless if a pet is 4lbs or 40lbs, gabapentin should NOT be given if it contains xylitol PERIOD. Don't let anyone downplay the danger of xylitol. Like if someone said (after the fact not upfront) "oh it's just a little crack cocaine, not a big deal - we put it in the kid's pb&js all the time w/no issues, you'd probably have them taken to court. It's not that different. There is AMPLE reputable literature educating us on the dangers of xylitol to animals. Granted, this was 3 yrs ago so hopefully this vet doesn't carry toxic medication anymore. Hopefully they aren't giving anything toxic to unknowing pet owners (such as in our case) which essentially is poisoning our own pet without knowing it. My concern & reason for writing this 3 years later is the guilt I already feel hoping this didn't happen to someone else who wasn't as lucky & didn't know to ask if xylitol was in their pet's medication. Or maybe they did ask like we did & they got the same answer, trusted & believed the irresponsible response from doctors & staff here stating a little xylitol isn't a big deal, it's given to their patients all the time. I'm not angry. I'm not reviewing any other part of the service Bella had that day because the x-rays turned out great. This is solely to inform any current or future unsuspecting pet parent about the danger of xylitol & the attitude the Lubbock doctor & staff of mar 2020 had at the time: 1.) having a non pet safe formula 2.) the vet prescribing gabapentin knowing it contained xylitol despite Bella's weight 3.5 lbs & 3.) receptionist & office manager both confirming the xylitol in Bella's gabapentin wasn't a big deal. I thank Jesus daily for Bella who is 12 years young going on 13 come Sept 2023 -- living her best life despite having Chiari Malformation & Syringomyelia.

Recently she went from fine to down hill. She stopped eating, she was always wanting to sleep, and she started getting weak. We tried changing food and it worked for a bit but not for more than a week. It was like she enjoyed something new and more enticing but she couldn't really stomach it anymore. It then got to the point where she struggled to breathe. That by far was the worst thing watching her suffer like that. It happened slowly within a few days and I hadn't even noticed at first. But the last night I felt like something was wrong. I figured schedule a vet appointment in the morning and see what's going on but when she woke me up at 3 in the morning scratching at my bed I knew that was her last night. She was having a hard time sleeping that night because the ability to breathe was becoming harder, through the night I sat there and comforted her with every gasp she made and every time she would try to close her eyes to sleep she would panic when she couldn't breathe again. By morning she was exhausted, I held her to stretch her diaphragm as much as I could and it helped. We loved on her and said our goodbyes, got her some last minute McDonald's and whip cream, and headed to the vet. I was devastated when we got there and my sister had to do all the paperwork. They got us back relatively quickly and my poor dog was so tired she didn't even bark at new people like she would usually do. That cemented in my head that this was the right thing to do when I had to euthanize her and it was the hardest decision I've ever had to make. The vet and her assistant were extremely kind and considerate to Alma and I. They didn't rush anything and they made the process as calm as possible given the circumstances. They told me what would happen in advance and even let me hold my baby in my lap while the procedure was taking place so she wouldn't be afraid. I think it was the best possible scenario I could have when it comes to letting my best friend go. So thank you so much, Miss Raschke. And to the young woman that helped you that day. You both helped me that day more than you know and I'm so glad we got put into your care

Sis, did not have a car to get Sugar to a vet right away, so I took to yelp to find a reputable place to take her as soon I got back in town 2 days later. In the meantime, my Sister did her best to brace the leg, in case it was broken and made Sugar a comfortable as possible. I get home and take Sugar to her appointment with Dr. Linn. She takes one look at the leg, which his a little swollen, and states that she has no problem taking an X-ray of the leg, but to save me some money, she refers me to the Live Oak Animal Hospital down the road, since her in house orthopedic vet is actually on vacation. She basically did not want to charge me for an X-ray if it was possibly broken and there was no one that specialized in broken bones there to really help. She gave me the number to Live Oaks and explained that they were usually pretty busy but because they were a larger capacity animal hospital, with more orthopedic specialists on hand, they would be better equipped to help. Dr. Linn and her staff did not even charge me for the consult so that impressed me that they were not out to do a quick cash grab. I would certainly go back to this office again for regular vet needs for Sugar since they were so kind and empathetic.

My cat has been a big part of my family for 20 years and her health declined instantly yesterday. She was lethargic and having what seemed to be seizures. She could not walk without falling and her body physically flipping around. She turned from a lively, feisty cat to a non-responsive apparently sick cat over night. :( I brought my cat to this clinic to seek answers and care. The staff at this clinic placed their total focus on "MONEY".. not on how my pet was doing.. or what I was feeling from having to see her drastic decline. The staff started off with presenting me with a long list of "tests" they wanted to run.. Multiple tests that had NOTHING to do with her immediate care... Tests that would cost SEVERAL hundreds of dollars... I kept advising them that she is 20 years old, I didn't want to put her through unnecessary tests that had nothing to do with why I was there with her. Staff continued to want to "negotiate" the tests, leaving me in the room for very extended lengths of time, multiple times, going back and forth with the doctor to figure out what tests were actually "Necessary" to be done. This staff left me feeling like I was purchasing a used car and they were the salesman... No sense of compassion for what my pet was experiencing and for what I was feeling... Final prognosis from vet.. My cat was constipated?????? Really :( With that, anyone considering this clinic, should really think twice about it. My baby crossed the bridge this morning and is no longer in pain. My heart is broken :(

We were told she had only one superficial bite wound, that her X-rays and ultrasound looked reassuring, and that after being revived from coding, the plan was to monitor her for 24 hours before she could potentially come home. Based on everything we were told, we truly believed she was going to survive. The veterinarian was kind every time she spoke with us, and I genuinely appreciate that. However, we felt the communication gave us far more hope than the reality of our cat's condition. When our cat crashed, a veterinary technician came into our room and asked if we wanted CPR.....for an additional $200. We had already made it clear, multiple times, that we wanted every medically appropriate effort made to save her, regardless of the cost. Every second mattered, and we believed that conversation had already been settled. We were later told CPR was performed four separate times. During those events, the veterinarian also asked whether we wanted to consider humane euthanasia. We understand that euthanasia can be the most compassionate option in some situations, but after everything we had been told just moments before, the sudden shift was heartbreaking. We wanted every medically appropriate opportunity to save our beloved family member. The part that will stay with us forever is that we were never allowed to be with our baby while she was still alive. We never got to comfort her, tell her goodbye, or let her know we were there. By the time they finally brought her to us, she had already passed away and was already cold. No family should lose the opportunity to say goodbye to a beloved pet. Before we left, a veterinary technician explained that if the cremation service didn't pick her up that Sunday, she would be placed in a freezer until Monday morning. We understand that proper preservation is part of the process, but hearing those words immediately after losing our cat was incredibly painful and could have been communicated with much more compassion. This review is not because we lost our cat. We understand that emergency veterinary medicine is unpredictable and that not every patient can be saved. This review is about the communication, the lack of opportunity to be with our cat before she passed, and how we were treated during one of the worst nights of our lives. Our cat wasn't "just a cat." She was our baby. She was family. She deserved dignity, and we deserved the chance to be with her in her final moments. Based on our experience, we will never trust Lubbock Small Animal Emergency Clinic with another one of our animals.

My lovely little four legged daughter, Kiku was rough housing with her larger brother and somehow they ended up breaking a bowl, that cut Kiku's leg pretty bad, it went through all the tissues. I was travelling and my Sister was dog sitting. She called me up, told me what happened and since she did not have a car, she could not transport the pupperoni right away. So I told her to clean the wound, bandage it, and keep it clean until I returned in 2 days. I made it home, looked online and tried to book the earliest appointment they had. The main branch did not have any available appointments, so they directed me to this location and they were able to get me in early morning. They were all friendly, accommodating and answered my questions clearly and with a smile. It put me so at ease. The doctor that saw my baby was attentive and laid out my options. They worked up two quotes, one for a take home treatment, and one that involved stitches. I wanted the best for my baby, and wanted the best chance of a speedy recovery, so I opted for the stitches. I left her there, and within 2 hours, they called to tell me the procedure went well, and my baby was ready to be picked up. All in all, a great service, and my cutie is on her way to recovery. She does not like the cone of shame, but she is adapting quickly ;) I would recommend this animal hospital to anyone with a furbaby as they are clean, the staff is nice and inviting and they make sure you know what you are paying so there are no surprises. FIVE STARS FROM ME. Thank you Live Oak, I really appreciate you!
